Cities, counties in TX standing up to sanctuary cities ban
What You Need to Know About the SB 4 Legal Battle
The first major hearing on the sanctuary cities ban is set for next Monday in San Antonio.
On the night that Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed Senate Bill 4 into law, Luis Roberto Vera didnt sleep. Instead, the 61-year-old civil rights attorney holed up in his San Antonio office, working on a lawsuit. I went all night, all day, didnt take a bath, nothin, he said.
The next day, on May 8, Vera filed the first legal challenge to SB 4 on behalf of El Cenizo a tiny border town with the oldest sanctuary ordinance in the state. Since then, a flurry of legal challenges has emerged from other cities and counties, setting up a battle that will play out over the hot Texas summer and beyond.

Athena Salman, atheist legislator, on secular values and godless invocations
WASHINGTON (RNS) As member of the Arizona House of Representatives, Athena Salman took her turn recently and offered an invocation before the start of the days business.
But the first-term Democrat from Tempe, is an atheist and her invocation did not reference a higher power.
Take a moment to look around you at the people gathered here today, Salmans invocation began. We come from a variety of backgrounds and interests, but the passion that ignites us; the fire that burns within us; is similar. We all seek to form a more perfect union, creating change from an abiding passion to improve the lives of the humans of this city. There is wonder in that. More importantly, though, there is unity.
That unity was shattered immediately after the invocation when Rep. Mark Finchem, a Republican, objected to the Arizona House leadership because the invocation did not appeal to a higher power. In February, Republicans added a rule that required opening invocations to do so.

Mueller Recruits Another Lawyer from Solicitor Generals Office
A second lawyer from the U.S. solicitor generals office has signed on to the legal team of special counsel Robert Mueller in his investigation of possible ties between the Trump campaign and Russia.
Elizabeth Prelogar, an assistant to the solicitor general, is working with deputy solicitor general Michael Dreeben in his part-time role in Muellers legal team, according to lawyers familiar with the assignment. The participation of Dreeben, the Justice Departments top criminal law expert, was widely seen as a sign that Mueller was investigating possible criminal violations by President Donald Trump or others.
Unlike Dreeben, Prelogar does not have a single specialty in the solicitor generals office. She has argued five cases at the high court ranging from United States v. June, a Federal Tort Claims Act case, to Tyson v. Bouaphakeo, a class action dispute.
Prelogar, a former law clerk to Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Elena Kagan, is a Harvard Law School graduate and formerly worked in private practice at Hogan Lovells. Her involvement in the Russia probe has not previously been reported.

Here we go: Russia to target any 'flying objects' over Syria where its aviation is active: agencies
Russia's Defense Ministry said on Monday it would view as targets any flying objects over Syria in the areas of the country where its air forces operate, Russian news agencies reported.
The statement followed after a U.S. warplane shot down a Syrian army jet on Sunday in the southern Raqqa countryside, with Washington saying the jet had dropped bombs near U.S.-backed forces and Damascus saying the plane was downed while flying a mission against Islamic State militants. The Defense Ministry also said that it was suspending its interaction with the United States on preventing air incidents over Syria from June 19, the agencies reported.
The U.S. did not use its communication channel with Russia ahead of the downing of the Syrian government warplane, the ministry was quoted as saying.

lawyer brings witness-flipping expertise to Trump probes
A veteran federal prosecutor recruited onto special counsel Robert Mueller's team is known for a skill that may come in handy in the investigation of potential ties between Russia and U.S. President Donald Trump's 2016 campaign team: persuading witnesses to turn on friends, colleagues and superiors.
Andrew Weissmann, who headed the U.S. Justice Department's criminal fraud section before joining Mueller's team last month, is best known for two assignments - the investigation of now-defunct energy company Enron and organized crime cases in Brooklyn, New York - that depended heavily on gaining witness cooperation.
Securing the cooperation of people close to Trump, many of whom have been retaining their own lawyers, could be important for Mueller, who was named by the Justice Department as special counsel on May 17 and is investigating, among other issues, whether Trump himself has sought to obstruct justice. Trump has denied allegations of both collusion and obstruction.
"Flipping" witnesses is a common, although not always successful, tactic in criminal prosecutions.
