Eric Garland storified with a little game theory about the Russians and the 2016 elections
<THREAD>Im now hearing this meme that says Obama, Clinton, et al. are doing nothing, just gave up.
Guys. Its time for some game theory.
ACTOR ANALYSIS: The Russians enter the Game with a broad objective, flexible tactics, and several acceptable outcomes.
Russian interests have been, for many years now, the subversion of Western institutions, principally NATO, but any will do.
This subversion can take many forms: driving wedges between US-Commonwealth-Euro intel cooperation, break up NATO, create chaos.
This game has been developing for many years, is asymmetrical, and much cheaper than building a decent aircraft carrier.
Plus, the Russians f**king rule at covert shit. Always have. Ask a cold warrior. Mucho respect for our adversaries. They do clever work!
Post-communism, they're reduced to Drunk Uncle status in the global balance of power. Mouthy, smart, degraded, much reduced in stature.
Russians as *people* are civilized, artistic, enamored of brilliance and tragedy, and generally proud. And should be. They do not like this.
From this position launches an initiative from an old hand at the KGB, now solidified in influence: Subvert for the throat. Go big. Go hard.
While the West is frivolous and lazy and "Post-History," the clever take advantage. And here begins our present story.
Let's skip ahead to "Wikileaks." BRILLIANT. Ingratiate the Left into this anti-establishment distrust of Western intel.
The Bush Administration
George W Bush and Dick Cheney being slovenly, reckless idiots, the moral authority of Iraq and US intel is nil. In step "journalists."
Stealing hard drives from US intel and dumping them to foreign agents? That's *snicker* "journalism!" FREE SPEECH! ROFLMAO.
Oh, and such grand characters, so well run: Manning, Greenwald. So righteous, yet fragile! And feisty! Try a Twitter war with Glenn!
OH YOU PHILISTINE, YOU JUST HATE JOURNALISM! *sigh* *swigs something strong* And Moscow must have been doubling over.
THEN, OMG, that worked so well that the pièce de résistance was next: SNOWDEN!!! BOOYAH! THE BIG GAME! NSA! PRISM! SPASM!
Putting Snowden in context
(incidentally, the NSA was about the only agency the Russians took seriously) But then this EARNEST young man. He tells THE TROOTH!
DID YOU KNOW YOUR TOASTER IS SPYING ON YOU? THE GUBMINT! IT IS EVERYWHERE! THEY SPY ON (*controls snickering*) ALLIES! ALL BAD!
And still hungover from the rotten venality of the Iraq War and Bush's perversion of the IC as reliable, Wikileaks journalisms the NSA!
DON'T YOU CALL IT SOMETHING ELSE. HARD DRIVES FROM THE NSA IZ JOURNALISM! Even when you take the files to Brazil! Honest! Ask Glenn!
And then, automagically, our man Ed ends up...what's this now? In Russia? Well, they are such welcoming folks! How...nice!
Langley and Fort Meade run out of bourbon in about three hours, and every intel guy in Russia is drunk, dancing on the desks, and LAFFING.
AND THE LEFT! HOLY F**KING ADORABLE BATMAN! Honi soit qui mal y pense! How dare you suggest untoward Russian involvement! Journamalisms!!!!
US intel snorts all of the Robotussin in the DC/MD/VA area. Putin calls Snowden "A weird guy." LOLZ.
Moving on to the current chapter.
MEANWHILE, AT THE FOX NATION FORUMS: The other part of this impressive op is percolating - the buttress of the Alt-Right.
ONCE UPON A TIME, Dan Rather chased Nixon around a room asking him questions VERY HARSHLY and the notion of the Evil Media Elite was born.
See, because Nixon got impeached, that meant the media was in on it! WaPo! NYT! Traitors! We look bad! And the media hate begins.
Never mind that to know something in Topeka, somebody's gotta send you a newspaper or a radio signal or whatevs: The Media Is Lying.
Now, it's true, high level journalists and editors don't always see the world like Johnny Lunchpail in Missouri. True facts. But. Trouble.
Republicans decide to create a whole new layer of think tanks and media outlets in the 1980s dedicated to The Other Side.
The think tanks have a POV, but some are quite good, Cato in particular. Heritage came up with what's now Obamacare. AEI...ehhh. 2 outta 3.
But then the media play comes in. The cranky insane tent pastors on AM radio get...a makeover. They become Legitimate. Embraced.
Magnates start investing in outlets. Brand new pundits get huge audiences yelling about The Way Things Ought to Be (for White People).
And it's more successful than free chicken and beer. The money flows, the ratings swell. An Australian starts a TV network in the US.
What develops is an attractive, well-produced alternate universe. You no longer need an alternate take. You have alternate facts.
Al Gore mutters and bores his way out of a presidency in a race against a guy who spoke English like he learned it from Rosetta Stone.
And now, the stage is set for a metastasis of batshit nuttery, jingoism, and irrational autocratic fervor. A party becomes a cult.

Clinton won among voters that made $50,000 or less AND those said the ECONOMY was most important 7.3
https://img.washingtonpost.com/wp-apps/imrs.php?src=&w=1484In fact, if we extend that out to every state for which we have exit polling, in 22 of those 27 states a majority of people said that the economy was the most important issue. And in 20 of those states, voters who said so preferred Hillary Clinton. In 17, in fact, a majority of those voters backed Clinton....
In nearly every state, Clinton did better (and Trump worse) with voters worried about the economy than with the overall pool of voters. (Notice how the blue slices in the smaller circles extend further than the blue slices in the larger ones.)
How can that be? How can she win a majority of the majority and still lose? Because she lost with other groups worse.
The exit poll questionnaire gave voters a choice between four options for the most important issue. Clinton was generally preferred by those who said foreign policy was the most important issue, too, but Trump was preferred by those who saw immigration or terrorism as most important. The key is the margins. On average, about 13 percent of people in the 27 states said foreign policy was most important and they preferred Clinton by an average of 30 points.
On average, voters who said the economy was most important preferred Clinton by 7.3.
But on terrorism, rated most important by a fifth of voters, on average, Trump led by an average of 21.8 points. On immigration (most important to an average of 12.2 percent of respondents)? A huge 42.1 percentage point lead for Trump."

The best advice on Twitter trolls was written by al-Ghazali in the 11th century
As I posted on Twitter earlier today, the best advice Ive seen on dealing with Twitter trolls comes from the 11th century Sufi philosopher al-Ghazali and his text Ayyuha lWalad. Al-Ghazali anticipated our social media problems by 1000 years.
By al-Ghazalis definition, there are four types of Twitter trolls. Below: a description of the trolls, and his advice on how to deal with them.
Type 1: Jealous haters. Advice: Depart from him and leave him with his disease.
Then know that the sickness of ignorance is of four sorts, one curable and the others incurable. Of these which cannot be cured, [the first] is one whose question or objection arises from envy and hate, [and envy cannot be cured for it is a chronic weakness] and every time you answer him with the best or clearest or plainest answer, that only increases his rage and envy. And the way is not to attempt an answer.
One hopes for the removal of every enmity
Except enmity arising from envy.
So you must depart from him and leave him with his disease. Allah the Exalted said, Withdraw from whoever turns away from our warning and desires nothing except the present life. And the envious, both in all he says and in all he does, kindles [a fire] in the sowing of his deed: as the Prophet said, Allah bless him and grant him peace, Envy eats up excellences as fire eats up wood.
Type 2: Well, actually Twitter. These folks come sliding in your mentions pretending to be experts on that which they are not. Ignore them too.
The second, whose weakness arises from stupidity, and he also is incurable. As Isa said, upon him be peace, Indeed I did not fail in bringing the dead to life, but I failed in curing the stupid. And he is the man who has busied himself in seeking knowledge a short time and has learned something of the sciences of the intellect and of the sacred law, and so he asks questions and raises objections in his stupidity before the very learned one who has spent his life in the sciences of the intellect and the sacred law, and so this very stupid fellow does not know, And thinks that what is obscure to him is also obscure to the highly learned; and since he does not think this much, his question arises from stupidity, and you must not attempt to answer him.
Type 3: People who ask you for information they can find on Google, then dont believe the facts that they find. Theyre hopeless. Ignore.
Type 4: This troll is not really a troll at all. They are asking you questions which may be annoying, but are asked in good faith. It is worth engaging with this person
Type 3 & 4 here: https://sarahkendzior.com/2016/06/18/the-best-advice-on-twitter-trolls-was-written-by-al-ghazali-in-the-11th-century/

#6. Rebekah Mercer is now one of the top advisors on transition
#7. Steve Bannon is a board member of CA & senior WH advisor
#8. CA was used by the Brexit referendum campaign
#9. CA is a subsidiary of London-based SCL Group

#27. CA may win 2 major contracts to run White House data
#28. Bannon and Mercer are pushing for the CA contracts
#29. CA will be used to promote Trump's policies.
Congress needs to investigate Cambridge Analytica, what information it possesses on Americans, how that information was taken without users knowing or their permission, and how that data was used by the Trump campaign and will be used to manipulative messaging to achieve a specific outcome, especially given CA and its parent company's shady history and track record of propaganda and misinformation wars.

Donald Trump Is Gaslighting America
Donald Trump Is Gaslighting America
In this scorched-earth op-ed, Lauren Duca takes on Trump's systematic attempts to destabilize the truth and weaken the foundation of American freedom.
It wasn't one of the biggest Electoral College victories in history, so presumably that's another red-herring lie to distract from Trump treating the Central Intelligence Agency of the United States like it is some rogue blogger to be cast to the trolls. A foreign government's interference in our election is a threat to our freedom, and the President-elect's attempt to undermine the American people's access to that information undermines the very foundation upon which this country was built. It's also nothing new.
Trump won the Presidency by gas light. His rise to power has awakened a force of bigotry by condoning and encouraging hatred, but also by normalizing deception. Civil rights are now on trial, though before we can fight to reassert the march toward equality, we must regain control of the truth. If that seems melodramatic, I would encourage you to dump a bucket of ice over your head while listening to Duel of the Fates." Donald Trump is our President now; its time to wake up.
"Gas lighting" is a buzzy name for a terrifying strategy currently being used to weaken and blind the American electorate. We are collectively being treated like Bella Manningham in the 1938 Victorian thriller from which the term "gas light" takes its name. In the play, Jack terrorizes his wife Bella into questioning her reality by blaming her for mischievously misplacing household items which he systematically hides. Doubting whether her perspective can be trusted, Bella clings to a single shred of evidence: the dimming of the gas lights that accompanies the late night execution of Jacks trickery. The wavering flame is the one thing that holds her conviction in place as she wriggles free of her captors control.
To gas light is to psychologically manipulate a person to the point where they question their own sanity, and thats precisely what Trump is doing to this country. He gained traction in the election by swearing off the lies of politicians, while constantly contradicting himself, often without bothering to conceal the conflicts within his own sound bites. He lied to us over and over again, then took all accusations of his falsehoods and spun them into evidence of bias.
At the hands of Trump, facts have become interchangeable with opinions, blinding us into arguing amongst ourselves, as our very reality is called into question.

U.S. intelligence agencies confirmed that Russia also hacked the Republican National Committee (RNC). This is a dangerous threat to our democracy with serious implications. Could they have blackmailed the RNC?
A timeline of key developments:
*** April 13, 2016: CNN reports, "The relationship between Trump and Priebus has been tenuous almost since Trump announced his campaign [on June 16, 2015], including periods of disagreement and détente." RNC Chairman Priebus defends the RNC against Trump's accusations that RNC is rigging the primary against Trump. Trump calls out Priebus directly and says he "should be ashamed of himself." Priebus defends himself and his party saying it's "not true."
http://www.cnn.com/ /polit /donald-trump-reince-priebus-rnc/
*** May 4, 2016: "Donald Trump is the presumptive Republican presidential nominee following a decisive victory in the Indiana primary and the decision by Ted Cruz to drop out of the race."
http://www.cnn.com/ /03/politics/indiana-primary-highlights/
*** June 14, 2016: First report of DNC hacking: "The press reports "the DNC had been breached for nearly a year, from the summer 2015 and the other in April 2016. The attacker was knocked out of its network during the weekend of June 11 and 12, 2016."
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DC_Leaks
*** June 14th, 2016: Washington Post reports, "Russian government hackers penetrated the computer network of the Democratic National Committee and gained access to the entire database of opposition research on GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump, according to committee officials and security experts who responded to the breach. The intruders so thoroughly compromised the DNCs system that they also were able to read all email and chat traffic, said DNC officials and the security experts."
https://www.washingtonpost.com/ /cf006cb4-316e-11e6-8ff7-7b
*** July 22nd @ 10:30 AM: "WikiLeaks released over 2 publications 44,053 emails and 17,761 attachments from the top of the US Democratic National Committee." This happened a couple days before the official events began at the Democratic National Convention, with delegates, donors, activists and press arriving in Philly at the time for the week of festivities.
https://wikileaks.org/dnc-emails/
*** July 24th: The impact of the Russian hacking and releasing of the DNC emails leads to the resignation of Priebus's Democratic counterpart DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz, "Democrats arrived at their nominating convention on Sunday under a cloud of discord as Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee, abruptly said she was resigning after a trove of leaked emails..."
http://www.nytimes.com/ /debbie-wasserman-schultz-dnc-wikil
*** July 25th @ 10:07 AM: RNC Chairman politicizes the Russian hacking of the DNC. Politico reports, "While Clinton campaign manager Robby Mook has suggested that Russia is behind the DNC email publication by WikiLeaks, Priebus told radio host Hugh Hewitt on Monday that he does not know "if we can definitively say who has them and whos taken them." "But the point is, the Russians didnt write the emails and neither did whoever else. The WikiLeaks people didnt write the emails," Priebus said. "The DNC wrote those emails. So they have to answer for what those emails say and why paid staff and donors to the DNC were adding an arm to the Hillary Clinton campaign during the primary season.
http://www.politico.com/ /dnc-leak-reince-priebus-russia-22
*** July 25th @ 12:31 PM: RNC Chair Priebus tells MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell that the RNC was not hacked: "Maybe our, maybe our folks are better at securing our email and our cloud and our data than the DNC. I don't know what the answer to that is, Andrea, but at this point, we haven't been hacked. And we don't expect to be. And we're monitoring it every day, but, I can assure if someone hacked my emails, they wouldn't find me calculating against particular candidates, and that's not something that I would do."
http://www.politico.com/ /07/reince-priebus-rnc-hacking-226
*** July 29th: The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) reports it was hacked.
http://thehill.com/ /hou /289773-dccc-confirms-it-was-hacked
*** August 12th: Press reports that DCCC stolen emails were made public. The DCCC said "a cyber security company it hired after the breach concluded two Russian security agencies were behind that hack. Cyber experts have told NBC News they believe Guccifer 2.0 is a Russian front, and also said the leaks show that Russia is seeking to influence the U.S. presidential campaign, perhaps with an eye toward helping Donald Trump."
http://www.nbcnews.com/ /guccifer-2-0-releases-documents-dc
*** August 12th: Politico reports, "DC Leaks released roughly 300 emails from Republican targets, including the 2016 campaign staff of Arizona Senator John McCain, South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham, and 2012 presidential candidate and former Minnesota Representative Michele Bachmann."
http://www.politico.com/ /suspected-russian-dnc-hackers-als
*** September 14th @ 6:16 PM ET: Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, the Chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security tells CNN's Wolf Blitzer that Russians hacked the RNC. "It's important to note, Wolf, that they have not only hacked into the DNC but also into the RNC. So, they are not discriminating one party against the other." "The Russians ... basically, have hacked into both parties at the national level. And that gives us all concern about what their motivations are," McCaul told CNN in an interview.
http://www.cnn.com/ /michael-mccaul-rnc-hack-russia-wolf-bl
*** September 14th @ 6:40 PM ET: CNN's Wolf Blitzer reports that RNC spokesman Sean Spicer denies the RNC was hacked by the Russians, saying "there was no known breach of the RNC's cyber security."
http://www.politico.com/ /republican-national-committee-was
*** September 14th @ 7 pm-ish: Rep. Michael McCaul issues a statement less than an hour after saying the RNC was hacked by the Russians, and now says he "misspoke"... "I misspoke by asserting that the RNC was hacked. What I had intended to say was that in addition to the DNC hack, Republican Political Operatives have also been hacked."
http://www.thedailybeast.com/ /gop-rep-i-misspoke-on-rnc-ha
*** November 13, 2016: Wall Street Journal reports, "President-elect Donald Trump named Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus as his White House Chief of Staff."
http://www.wsj.com/ /leading-contender-for-donald-trump-s-c
----------------------------
It is also important to note that there have been a handful of Republicans in Congress who have been outspoken about Russia hacking and attacking our elections, including calling out Trump for denying the U.S. Intelligence Community's findings. We need more leaders like them who understand this is not a political issue but a national security issue. In addition to Senator Lindsey Graham, some of the strong Republicans on this issue are highlighted here:

Security official, 63, collapses and dies at Russian Consulate in New York CityBY ROCCO PARASCANDOLA GRAHAM RAYMAN
NEW YORK DAILY NEWS Updated: Tuesday, November 8, 2016, 3:41 PM
A 63-year-old security officer collapsed and died early Tuesday at the Russian Consulate on the Upper East Side, police said.
The Russian native, who lived in Manhattan, suffered some kind of medical problem and dropped to the floor in the consular security office on E. 91st St. near Fifth Ave. just before 7 a.m. He died at the scene.
A police source said he had prior health issues.
An American physician that was admitted to the Consulates building clearly ruled out signs of a violent death, the consulate said in a statement posted to Facebook.
The victim was not immediately identified. The city medical examiner will conduct an autopsy to determine how he died.
