Charlie Crist misses vote condemning UN resolution on Israel settlements

WASHINGTON -- Rep. Charlie Crist tonight missed a key House vote condemning a UN resolution seen as anti-Israel, and issued a statement quoting another lawmaker, an usual move, to say the least.

Here is Crist's news release, which does not specify why he missed the vote.

Tonight, Congressman Charlie Crist (D-St. Petersburg) made the following statement regarding the vote held in the U.S. House of Representatives on H. Res. 11, a resolution objecting to United Nations Security Council Resolution 2334 as an obstacle to Israeli-Palestinian peace:

"This evening, I planned to vote in favor of H. Res. 11, but was unfortunately delayed in arriving to the House floor," said Congressman Crist. "As a cosponsor of this measure, I believe it is vital that the United Nations Security Council be sent a clear message that biased, one-sided resolutions targeting Israel are unacceptable and only make it more difficult for negotiations to resume between Israelis and Palestinians.

Dem rep says she's skipping Trump's inauguration

Source: The Hill

Democratic Rep. Katherine Clark (Mass.) plans to skip the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump, the Boston Globe reports.

Clark, who was elected in 2013, said she believes attending the inauguration would "normalize" Trump's “bigoted, misogynist, anti-Semitic, and racist claims.”

Clark is breaking with the rest of the Massachusetts delegation, as all the other members from the state plan to attend the inauguration, the Globe notes.

“I support the peaceful transition of power, but I don’t feel that I need to attend the pageantry associated with and for this President,” she said.

McConnell, Schumer sign onto resolution condemning UN Israel vote

Source: The Hill

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) are signing on to a resolution objecting to a United Nations Security Council vote that condemned Israeli settlements.

The resolution urges all U.S. presidents to "uphold the practice of vetoing all United Nations Security Council resolutions that seek to insert the Council into the peace process, recognize unilateral Palestinian actions including declaration of a Palestinian state, or dictate terms and a timeline for a solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict,” according to a draft, obtained by Politico.

It was authored by Sens. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and Ben Cardin (D-Md.), the ranking member on the Foreign Relations Committee, and comes on the heels of a controversial Security Council vote on Dec. 24 condemning Israeli settlement activity in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

The Obama administration abstained from the vote and declined to use its veto power on the Security Council to block it. That move sparked criticism of the administration from lawmakers in both parties and from President-elect Donald Trump.
