Girard442's JournalA Merry Christmas to all the other atheists here.
Yes, I know it's a religious holiday, but all cultures in the Northern Hemisphere have a Winter festival of some sort, to celebrate the days getting longer, the sun being higher in the sky, and the anticipation of better days ahead.
As an atheist, it is good at this time of year to humbly acknowledge the existence of higher powers that have helped me through some of life's darkest days -- my fellow human beings, who have given help without any expectation of benefit to themselves. I can't repay them directly, but maybe I can pay some of the debt forward. It's large. I doubt I'll be around long enough to retire the whole principal. One does the best one can.
I have learned that I can enjoy gospel music by hearing it as aspirational and not about a concrete reality. Religion can be good that way. One can always hope that the good will persist and the bad will fade away. That's more aspirational than a concrete reality, but there's always hope.
Happy Holidays everyone. Spring is coming!
I know we imagine Insurrection II as a bunch of pudgy cosplayers...
...with their tricked-out squirrel rifles vastly outnumbered and outgunned by a loyal professional military.
But...what if the military truly can't figure out what to do? What if the Trumpite candidate takes the White House through smelly state politics that are still blessed by the SCOTUS? If we rose up against that, wouldn't the military be compelled by law and custom to put us down?
If the politics were rank enough, the military might actually split, which would have a pretty much guaranteed bad outcome.
Anyone out there with their finger on the pulse of the right wing know what they think of 1/6 now?
Do they think what happened was cool and heroic and can't wait for the next coup attempt? Or are they in deep denial that anything happened at all?
When Roe is overturned, expect OB/GYNs to flee the Red States.
The logic is brutal: when a pregnant patient is in a crisis (think ectopic pregnancy) a doctor may be forced to choose between terminating the pregnancy and facing law enforcement or comitting malpractice by doing nothing and unnecessarily risking the patient's life.
Better to go practice in a sane state.
Is society evolving toward gun-free gated playgrounds, malls, etc?
Who wouldn't flock to an area to shop or let the kids play that was guaranteed gun-free these days?
That's assuming that the courts don't declare those places de facto public areas and force them to admit armed people anyway.
Imagine a valve is stuck in your house and the basement is flooding...
Plumber #1 says, "The only proper tool to close the valve is a Webley-Vickers 11.2 mm. heptagonal spanner. I can order it and have it here by Tuesday."
You say, "Dude, there's 6 inches of water in the basement and by Tuesday, my house will be doing a really good impression of Marine World!"
Plumber #2 says, "The only proper tool to close the valve is a Webley-Vickers 11.2 mm. heptagonal spanner, which I can't get until Tuesday, but... I can bash it shut with a brick right now. You'll probably have to replace the valve later."
When dealing with Bannon, et al, we need #2, but some days it seems like all we have is #1's.
To recap: I can go somewhere openly carrying my assault rifle...
If anyone confronts me, I can kill them, claiming self-defense, and since they're dead, they can't testify against me. Doesn't matter whether they're armed or not, because nail clippers and key chains can be lethal weapons too, dontcha know. If anyone else tries to stop me, I can kill them too.
What's next? Shoot people carrying in the back because you claim to have seen "signs" they're about to be an active shooter?
We have to let go of the idea that investigations and disclosures...
...will be kryptonite to the Trumpies. They are looking to be more like steroids and meth.
I have this gnawing bad feeling that Manchin and Sinema are totally in the R's pocket...
...and will let absolutely nothing pass.
Please prove me wrong.
It's time for the Biden Administration to cross the Rubicon and put Bannon behind bars.
When the full House votes to send the charge of Contempt of Congress to the DOJ, Biden should instruct Garland to fast-track the prosecution, with an emphasis on giving Bannon the same treatment that a common car thief would get: charge his ass criminally, arrest him, perp-walk him, and get a judge to set bail like he was a flight risk.
Biden wants to rally the troops? How about landing an actual punch, for once?
