Puerto Ricans flood streets, demand resignation of governor in huge protest

Source: NBC News

The "March of the People," as it's being called, paralyzed the San Juan metropolitan area a day after Ricardo Rosselló said he would not resign.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — Hundreds of thousands of people occupied San Juan's biggest highway on Monday demanding the resignation of Gov. Ricardo Rosselló, in the island's largest protest in recent history.

“We don’t want him,” said Maria Mercedes Perieria Davila, who attended the demonstration dressed in the Puerto Rican flag. “The people are screaming today for him to leave. Nobody wants him. Puerto Rico is yelling!”

Not even heavy rain showers discouraged protesters like Pereira Dávila, as crowds blasted music while chanting "Ricky, renuncia!" (Ricky, resign!).

The "March of the People," as it's being called, has paralyzed the San Juan metropolitan area and the nerve center of the island's main shopping, banking and commercial districts.

These Dramatic Pictures Show The Huge Protests Against The Puerto Rico Governor

Thousands of people have taken to the streets of Puerto Rico in protest against Governor Ricardo Rosselló following the leak of misogynistic and homophobic text messages made by Roselló.

Widespread protests in Puerto Rico's capital city of San Juan have continued for nearly a week amid calls for the resignation of Gov. Ricardo Rosselló. The demonstrations come after Puerto Rico’s Center for Investigative Journalism published nearly 900 pages of leaked text messages in which Rosselló engages in homophobic and misogynistic language with his inner circle.

The protests, which at times have been met with tear gas and force, come amid increasing pressure from the public to address government corruption, financial recession, and the emergency response following Hurricane Maria in 2017.

On Thursday, the governor said in a statement that his commitment to Puerto Rico is “stronger than ever,” making clear his intention to remain in office.

But as these pictures show, the protests against him show no sign of slowing down.

Guys I've been working on this project for a while now. My idea is that we need to show more love & appreciation to our Democratic leaders. Wish them a happy birthday ... or whatever. This info was all mined from the Wikipedia website. This list is ONLY Democrats, but there may be a couple independents on here too. If I'm missing anybody let me know - I'll be glad to add them to this list.

In a few weeks I'll post the August birthdays.
