Jeremy Renner is back in his first acting role since his near-fatal snowplow accident last year. On Thursday, Paramount released the trailer for the upcoming third season of Mayor of Kingstown, featuring Renner in his returning role as Mike McLusky.
Renner is “back in business” in the trailer, delivering an eerie voiceover about the difference between good and evil. According to a logline for Season Three, “a series of explosions rock Kingstown and its citizens, as a new face of the Russian mob sets up shop in the city, and a drug war rages inside and outside prison walls. The pressure is on Mike McLusky (Renner) to end the war, but things get complicated when a familiar face from his incarcerated past threatens to undermine the Mayor’s attempts to keep the peace among all factions.”

Renner returned to the Kingstown set one year following his accident, in which he was badly injured after being run over by a snowplow at his home near Lake Tahoe. The actor broke more than 30 bones, including eight ribs in 14 places, his right knee, right ankle, left leg tibia, left ankle, right clavicle, and right shoulder. He also sustained injuries to his face and suffered a collapsed lung.

Soon afterward, Gov. Josh Shapiro posted a statement on social media that endorsed the bill. He called on the state Senate to pass it. “I’ve been fighting for legislation like this since I was attorney general,” Mr. Shapiro said in a post on X.
But the Republican majority leader in that chamber, Sen. Joe Pittman, R-Indiana, gave an unenthusiastic response when asked about the bill. His caucus, he said, supports law enforcement, school safety initiatives and looking at providing more behavioral or mental health supports, but “Pennsylvania currently has robust laws in place pertaining to guns.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Mail-in ballots that are missing a date or have an incorrect date will not be counted in Pennsylvania due to a 2-1 opinion issued earlier today by the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. This decision comes out of a case brought by nonpartisan organizations challenging a Pennsylvania regulation that requires counties to reject mail-in ballots that either are missing a date on the outer return envelope or have an “incorrect” date (such as a voter’s birthday instead of the day the envelope was signed).
Ahead of the 2022 midterm elections, the plaintiffs alleged that rejecting ballots with a missing or incorrect date violates the Materiality Provision of the Civil Rights Act — which prevents disenfranchising a voter for a reason that is not material to their eligibility such as a small error or omission — because the date is not consequential in determining if a voter’s ballot was timely cast. Instead, Pennsylvania uses the time the ballot was received and stamped by the county board to determine when the ballot was received.
Republicans quickly intervened to defend the date regulation arguing that private groups and individuals cannot sue under the Materiality Provision and that the date provision is constitutional.
In November 2023, a federal district court sided with the plaintiffs and struck down this requirement after finding that it does violate the Materiality Provision. “Federal law prohibits a state from erecting immaterial roadblocks, such as this, to voting,” the court held. This decision was a major victory for voters, but was unfortunately reversed today. The panel held that the Materiality Provision only applies when the state determines who may vote, but does not extend to rules like the date regulation.

But Will’s image took a serious hit after he slapped Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars. Tax filings show that after the incident, high-profile contributors that had given to the foundation in the past stopped, and the enterprise is in the process of shutting down for good.
According to tax records from the Will And Jada Smith Family Foundation reviewed by Variety (via ProPublica), the foundation’s revenue dropped from $1,760,000 in 2020 and $2,138,660 in 2021 to $365,870 in 2022. The year-over-year drop of 83% included the departure of contributors such as American Airlines, which donated $76,160 in 2021, and CAA, which contributed $100,000 in 2021.
A source close to the foundation told Variety that the couple was winding down the foundation, which they founded in 1996, before the Oscars slap, and is focusing more on giving the same amount to charitable causes — just privately. A representative for the Smith family declined to comment.

Federal judge dismisses Pa. GOP legislators' election-related lawsuit against Shapiro and Biden

HARRISBURG — A federal judge on Tuesday dismissed a lawsuit filed by 27 Republican state lawmakers against President Joe Biden, Gov. Josh Shapiro and other officials that claimed they usurped the Legislature’s authority to run elections by methods that included Mr. Shapiro’s September announcement of automatic voter registration.
In a memorandum, U.S. District Judge Jennifer P. Wilson said the the court did not have jurisdiction on the topic because the lawmakers did not have the standing to raise the claims at the heart of the case. Judge Wilson said the injuries the group of Republicans allege are “suffered equally by each Pennsylvania legislator” and that the group “have not alleged any individualized and particularized harm.”
In a statement, Mr. Shapiro said: “In 2020, I defeated Donald Trump and his conspiracy theorist allies in court more than 40 times to defend Pennsylvanians’ votes and protect access to the ballot box. Today, we’ve done it again by getting their frivolous effort to stop automatic voter registration in our Commonwealth dismissed. Automatic voter registration is safe, secure, efficient, and entirely within my administration’s authority.”
The plaintiffs were led by state Rep. Dawn Keefer, R-York, and a candidate for state Senate. Many are members of the conservative Pennsylvania Freedom Caucus, of which Ms. Keefer is a leader.

HARRISBURG — Pennsylvanians will head to the polls on April 23 to select their parties’ candidates for state treasurer. Only registered Democrats and Republicans can cast ballots for candidates during spring elections. The primary winners will face off during November’s election, in which all voters can participate.
The state treasurer is one of three elected row officers in the commonwealth, and plays a crucial role in managing state dollars. They can serve a maximum of two four-year terms.
State revenue is deposited into the Treasury, and the office is responsible for using it to pay state bills for things like contracts and workers. The treasurer also invests state savings, and sits on the boards of Pennsylvania’s two massive public sector pension funds. The position is commonly seen as a stepping stone for higher office; U.S. Sen Bob Casey (D., Pa.) is a former treasurer.
Republican Treasurer Stacy Garrity seeks a second term. She has named as key accomplishments the reduction of fees and the end of minimum deposit requirements for PA 529, the commonwealth-administered college savings program; and a fee reduction for PA ABLE, a savings program for people with disabilities.
