BEIRUT (Reuters) - A ceasefire took effect on Sunday in an Islamic State pocket straddling the Syria-Lebanon border, where the militants have been fighting the Lebanese army on one front and Hezbollah with the Syrian army on the other, Hezbollahs al-Manar TV said.
The Lebanese army announced its own ceasefire took effect at 7:00 a.m. (12 a.m. ET) to allow for negotiations over the fate of Lebanese soldiers who are in Islamic State captivity.
The military statement did not mention a ceasefire on Syrias side of the frontier.
Soon after, the Syrian army and Hezbollah announced a ceasefire in their offensive against Islamic State in Syrias west Qalamoun region near the border, al-Manar said.

Trump under fire over epic Friday news dump

It was a Friday night news dump like rarely seen before: President Donald Trump's administration announced a series of polarizing decisions that had been under discussions for weeks, just as a hurricane bore down on the Texas coast.
Trump privately had signaled for weeks he would pardon Sheriff Joe Arpaio, praising the sheriff's loyalty and telling at least one adviser that his base wanted it badly.
Seb Gorka, a national security aide, was on the outs with Chief of Staff John Kelly after criticizing Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on TV earlier in August. Kelly had told others Gorka had no future in the White House, and Gorka had aligned himself closely with now ousted chief strategist Steve Bannon.
And Trump's top advisers had scrambled to write implementation orders for the military transgender ban for several weeks, after Trump startled lawyers and advisers with tweets they considered ill-advised and had warned against.
The pardon, the exit and the guidelines all came on Friday evening, as a ferocious hurricane barreled down the Texas coastline, dizzying chyron operators and buzzing phones across Washington. White House aides and advisers said it was coordinated to handle polarizing decisions that were sure to alienate various constituencies.

Trump is under fire, not on it. Too bad.
What's the plural of "Agent Provocateur"? 'Cause they are Here!
Why the reemergence of purity standards? Hell, I wasn't even a member 16 months ago, when the Hillary-Bernie Wars were raging! But i did observe and absorb. And now that war is back in a different form.
First of all, let me assure you that I'm "clean" by what seems to be the emerging criterion: I voted for Hillary, both in last year's primary and general election. But is it now required that I (and others) prove that? What shall we need? Eyewitness testimony? A paper record from the polling site, if that's even available? A sworn affidavit? Hey, why not the printout of a truthful result from a polygraph test?!?
No liberal did this. No Democrat is stirring this pot. Make no mistake, there are Republicans and other wingnuts here, offering DU the Eridian Apple of Discord. I strongly suggest not biting.
Yellen Warns Against Erasing Regulations Made After Financial Crisis

By BINYAMIN APPELBAUM AUG. 26, 2017
GRAND TETON NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. Janet L. Yellen, the Federal Reserve chairwoman, delivered a strong rebuttal on Friday to Republican criticism that financial regulation is impeding economic growth.
In a speech that amounted to a warning to the Trump administration, Ms. Yellen said that people were forgetting the lessons of the crisis that began a decade ago.
Already, for some, memories of this experience may be fading memories of just how costly the financial crisis was and why certain steps were taken in response, she said.
Ms. Yellens forceful support for financial regulation may complicate her prospects for renomination as Fed chairwoman. Her four-year term ends in February, and President Trump has said he is considering whether to name someone else in her place. Gary D. Cohn, Mr. Trumps chief economic adviser, whom Mr. Trump has described as a candidate for the Fed job, is an architect of the administrations regulatory plans.

At this point, I doubt Cohn gets the job, having spoken non-worshipful words about Donnie the last couple of days.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. Black Hawk helicopter crashed off the coast of Yemen on Friday during a training mission and a search was under way for one U.S. service member, the U.S. military said.
U.S. Central Command said in a statement that five other service members aboard the aircraft had been rescued after the crash, which took place about 20 miles (32 km) off the southern coast of Yemen at 7 p.m. (16000 GMT).
A U.S. official told Reuters that the cause of the crash was under investigation.
When the incident took place the helicopter was not very high above the water, CENTCOM spokesman Colonel John Thomas said.
