CDC chief: Covid-19 infections could be 10 times higher than confirmed cases

Source: Politico

CDC Director Robert Redfield on Thursday said the number of coronavirus infections in the U.S. could be 10 times higher than the confirmed case count — meaning a total of more than 20 million.

“Our best estimate right now is for every case reported there were actually 10 other infections,” Redfield said during a call with reporters, referencing data from antibody tests that show who has been exposed to the virus.

He added that with cases spiking across the country, Americans should continue social distancing and wearing face coverings. He particularly singled out younger people, under the age of 50, who have accounted for an uptick in cases as states began to reopen.

The CDC on Thursday removed a specific age threshold on its guidance for who is at high risk of contracting the virus and now says risk increases steadily with age among adults.

I hope the statement "risk increases steadily with age among adults" gets a lot of press along with the 10X spread rate. That takes a bit of the burden off us older folks and puts it where it belongs: on young, irresponsible people refusing to stay home and running around without masks and not observing social distancing rules.

CDC: Pregnant women have an increased risk of severe Covid-19

CDC: Pregnant women have an increased risk of severe Covid-19

Excerpt taken from Guardian UK's rolling daily coronavirus coverage web page (approx. 3pm EST):

Link: https://www.theguardian.com/world/live/2020/jun/25/coronavirus-live-news-who-warns-of-global-oxygen-shortage-as-cases-rise-by-1m-per-week

Pregnant women have an increased risk of severe Covid-19 compared to women who are not pregnant, the head of the US Centers for Disease Prevention Robert Redfield told reporters, warning that states with rising coronavirus cases need to take action.

The CDC found that pregnant women are more likely to be admitted to the intensive care unit and to be put on mechanical ventilators than non-pregnant women, he said.

The agency said that pregnant women did not have a higher risk of death. The added it does not have data yet on how Covid-19 affects the outcomes of those pregnancies.

Redfield said that more infections among young people could partly be attributed to an increase in diagnosing illness among that group, whose members are less likely to be hospitalised than older people.

The agency may use social media platform TikTok to try to reach young people with warnings to keep a distance of six feet, wear a face covering and avoid large gatherings.

“These hotspots that we see...They are significant. And we need to respond to them,” Redfield said, pointing to rising hospital admissions in Arizona and Texas.

Also, from the CDC's web site:

If You Are Pregnant, Breastfeeding, or Caring for Young Children.....

(snip)
Based on what we know at this time, pregnant people might be at an increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19 compared to non-pregnant people. Additionally, there may be an increased risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes, such as preterm birth, among pregnant people with COVID-19. Therefore, if you are pregnant, be mindful about reducing your risk of getting sick. If you are caring for children, you can teach them everyday steps (such as proper handwashing) to help them stay healthy and, in turn, help protect yourself and your family.

Over 1,000 Qatar world cup workers test positive for Covid-19

Over 1,000 Qatar world cup workers test positive for Covid-19

From live update Coronavirus coverage:

https://www.theguardian.com/world/live/2020/jun/25/coronavirus-live-news-who-warns-of-global-oxygen-shortage-as-cases-rise-by-1m-per-week

Snips:
Over one thousand workers employed on projects for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar have tested positive for the coronavirus, and an engineer has died after contracting Covid-19, as preparations for the tournament have continued relentlessly despite the global pandemic.

Qatar has one of the highest rates of infection per capita in the world, with almost 92,000 cases, in a population of just 2.8 million. During May over a third of those tested were found to be positive. The number of deaths have remained low, with just 106 fatalities.

Despite the high infection rate, there has been almost no let up in the pace of construction at the new stadiums. Last week, Education City stadium, the third of eight World Cup venues to be completed, was officially opened.

Our source, told us that from the 40,000 people working on the 2022 World Cup, some 1100 have contracted the virus, almost all of those have recovered but there are still 121 active cases.

I've read numerous reports about the near slavery-like horrific working conditions of these workers brought to Quatar on contract and how it's almost impossible for them to go home even in an emergency. Many have died from heat exhaustion and construction accidents, all just to build a huge sports venue for a one-time series of games.

CrossFit sold after George Floyd backlash

CrossFit sold after George Floyd backlash
BBC News

Read more here: https://www.bbc.com/news/business-53171442

Excerpts:
CrossFit owner Greg Glassman has sold his fitness company, after stepping down as chief following outcry over remarks he made about George Floyd. The comments, in which he asked why he should mourn for Mr Floyd, had prompted athletes, gyms and sportswear firms to cut ties with the business.

Incoming owner Eric Roza, a tech executive and co-founder of a successful CrossFit gym, said he would be "working hard to rebuild bridges".

Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The value of the Crossfit business, which is based on a branded exercise regimen focused on high intensity workouts, has previously been estimated at about $4bn (£3.1bn). It is affiliated with about 13,000 gyms in 158 countries worldwide.

"In the past weeks, divisive statements and allegations have left many members of our community struggling to reconcile our transformative experiences in the local box with what we've been reading online," said Mr Roza, a former Oracle executive who is now working for US venture capitalists General Catalyst. "My view is simple: Racism and sexism are abhorrent and will not be tolerated in CrossFit."

The article goes on to review the controversial comments made by Glassman in early June.

I have little sympathy for officials of popular companies that are so full of arrogance and hubris that they're not yet smart enough to watch their comments that get rightfully published out to the public.

Mexico earthquake: 7.5-magnitude tremor hits Oaxaca state
Quake strikes in south of country but is felt more than 400 miles away in Mexico City

Link: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/jun/23/mexico-earthquake-75-magnitude-tremor-hits-oaxaca-state

Excerpts:
A 7.5-magnitude earthquake has rattled large swaths of southern and central Mexico, killing at least one person, according to the country’s president.

Mexico’s national seismological service said the quake struck the southern state of Oaxaca at 10.29am local time (1429 BST) on Tuesday but was felt more than 400 miles away in the capital, Mexico City, where buildings shook and panicked residents fled on to the streets.
+++
The situation near the quake’s epicentre in Crucecita, Oaxaca, was not immediately clear. But in a social media “message to the Mexican people” president Andrés Manuel López Obrador officials said one person had been confirmed dead after a landslide along the country’s Pacific coast. Another person was injured.
+++
Oaxaca’s state governor, Alejandro Murat, told Milenio Televisión the quake had triggered landslides, cut off road links between some towns and damaged some buildings, including one hospital that had been treating Covid-19 patients. Murat said the sick were being moved elsewhere. But no major buildings in the state capital appeared to have been severely damaged.

Laissez-faire economics, laissez-faire healthcare, laissez-faire human life.

The purpose of Republican individualism is purely to destroy any and all community efforts at organizing to better our lives - even to survive a global pandemic and climate change. That's all driven by the global plutocrats and fascist politicians like Putin.

You're exactly right, Intech. Trump and his red state governors are abandoning any and all efforts to control this pandemic. They want red state economies to dominate the economic landscape but with the cost of thousands of unnecessary COVID-19 hospitalizations and deaths.

It's impossible for Republicans to lead governments they're trying to destroy.

NBA concerns are growing with a spike in Florida coronavirus cases

NBA concerns are growing with a spike in Florida coronavirus cases

I'm not a big sports fan but found this discussion interesting as the big money boys play the dangerous game of testing the waters with potential coronavirus infections in sports.

The same game is being played out across the entire American economy.
