For Deal on Dreamers, White House Will Demand Crackdown on Child Border Crossers

By MICHAEL D. SHEAR OCT. 8, 2017
WASHINGTON The White House will demand this week that lawmakers harden the border against thousands of children fleeing violence in Central America before President Trump will agree to any deal with Democrats that allows the young undocumented immigrants known as Dreamers to stay in the United States legally.
Administration officials said Sunday that Mr. Trump would seek to slam shut what they described as loopholes that encouraged parents from Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras to send their children illegally into the United States, where many of them melt into American communities and become undocumented immigrants.
The demand is included in a list of legislative priorities for tougher immigration enforcement that Mr. Trump and his advisers were set to release on Sunday as they seek to establish their bargaining position in expected congressional negotiations later this year about the Dreamers, who were brought to the United States as small children and often have few ties to the countries of their birth.
Last month, the president abruptly ended an Obama-era policy called Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, in which former President Barack Obama had used his executive authority to protect about 800,000 of the young immigrants from the threat of deportation and provide them legal work permits. If a deal is not reached by March, tens of thousands of the Dreamers will begin losing permission to work and protection from deportation.

If only we could pass a law against children becoming POTUS.
Clowns. Aren't. Scary!
Sure, Pennywise is. The clown doll from Poltergeist was (the original, anyway; I haven't seen the sequel). And John Wayne Gacy? Well, if he was so frightening, how was he able to lure all those boys? "Scary" was about #26 on the list of HIS demerits!
No, this alleged phobia is a recent media creation. Maybe there's a gene in everyone attracted to the bright lights that also makes them fear clowns, I don't know. But when I was growing up, nobody I knew (including myself) was afraid of them.
Democrats look to wreak havoc in GOP primaries

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. Democrats are looking to revive a little Todd Akin magic in 2018.
With Republican Senate primaries from West Virginia to Montana promising to pit Trump-inspired insurgents against more mainstream candidates, Democrats are considering ways to step in and wreak some havoc. The idea: Elevate the GOPs most extreme option in each race, easing Democrats path to victory in a range of states tilted against them.
At its most aggressive, the tactic could be a sequel to Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskills 2012 campaign against then-GOP Rep. Akin in Missouri. She actively intevened in the Republican primary with ads designed to boost the conservative Akin to the front of the pack. Once he became the nominee, a series of gaffes led by his legitimate rape comment and hard-line positions unraveled his campaign.
Possibilities abound to revive the strategy next year, Democrats say. Theyre exploring states including Arizona, where Kelli Ward, a challenger to Sen. Jeff Flake, said Sen. John McCain should vacate his seat as quickly as possible after his brain cancer diagnosis. Theyre looking at Nevada, where frequent candidate Danny Tarkanian who once mused about pretend[ing] were black, referring to his African-American opponent is running against Sen. Dean Heller.

All of America foreign wars haven't taken as many lives as guns have in the last 50 years
In the wake of the Las Vegas massacre in which at least 59 people were killed and hundreds more were injured in what is now the deadliest mass shooting in the country's modern history, astonishing statistics specifically unique to the United States have resurfaced.
In only the last 50 years more American citizens have died from gunshots than in the entire country's history of wars, that's more than 1.5 million people since 1968, NBC News reported using data from the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
"What we've seen in Las Vegas is a uniquely American scene," former FBI agent Ali Soufan told MSNBC. "The aftermath of such traumatic events have become an all too familiar scene in our society and in our politics, unfortunately."

Police: Las Vegas gunman did not plan to die inside room
EXPLANATORY EDIT: I posted the same basic story in LBN yesterday. If you think I'm harping on this, you're right. My brother Steven was a card-carrying NRA member with no history of mental illness, but he shot himself to death with a 100% legally-purchased gun eight years ago. And I'm the type who holds a grudge.
Las Vegas sheriff: gunman planned to survive and may have had help

Las Vegas police said there was evidence gunman Stephen Paddock intended to survive and escape his deadly attack at a country music festival on Sunday, and revealed that he also rented an apartment overlooking another music festival that took place in the city the previous weekend.
The disclosures were among several new details revealed by Sheriff Joseph Lombardo, who also strayed into speculation that the man believed responsible for the deadliest mass shooting in modern US history had help.
Do you think this was all accomplished on his own? Lombardo asked, noting the arsenal of weapons the shooter amassed, and the discovery of explosives in his car. He added: Youve got to make the assumption he had to have some help at some point.
He said that that the suspected killer, a 64-year-old retiree and gambler, rented a luxury room through Airbnb overlooking the Life is Beautiful music festival, another Las Vegas festival which occurred the week before the Route 91 Harvest music festival he eventually targeted.
