Supreme Court rules giant cross to veterans on public land is not gov't endorsement of religion

Source: NBC News

The Supreme Court ruled on Thursday that a huge concrete cross can stay on public land in suburban Washington, D.C., rejecting a claim that its presence is an unconstitutional government endorsement of religion.

The court, reversing a lower court, said such monuments are essentially historic, not religious, a ruling that potentially extended protection to hundreds of similar tributes nationwide.

The decision was a victory for defenders of the Peace Cross, a 40-foot-tall structure that has stood for more than 90 years in Bladensburg, Maryland. It was built with private funds to honor 49 servicemen from the region who died in World War I. A state parks commission took it over in 1961 to provide for its maintenance, and it now sits in the middle of a busy traffic interchange.

The court rejected a challenge from the American Humanist Association, which filed a lawsuit claiming that the presence of the cross on public land was an endorsement of a single religious faith.

Boris Johnson charges towards Number 10 as Dominic Raab is knocked out of Tory leadership race

Source: Yahoo

Boris Johnson has hurtled closer to becoming Britain’s next Prime Minister after winning the second round of voting in the Conservative Party leadership contest by a considerable margin.

Mr Johnson’s seemingly inexorable journey to victory saw him win 126 votes from Tory MPs.

Dominic Raab was knocked out of the competition after failing to secure the 33 votes required to proceed to the next round.

Rory Stewart, who began the race as a clear outsider, made it through after almost doubling his share of the vote.

Ginsburg sides with conservative justices in ruling over prison sentence

Source: The Hill

The Supreme Court on Monday found that a criminal defendant can be sentenced for violating his supervised release, even if the release expires while he is incarcerated ahead of facing new charges.

The justices, divided in the 5-4 decision, ruled against Jason Mont's argument that a district court shouldn't be able to charge him for violating his release because the term had expired at the time of the new sentencing.

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg sided with conservative Justices Clarence Thomas, John Roberts, Samuel Alito and Brett Kavanaugh in the majority. Justice Neil Gorsuch joined liberal Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Stephen Breyer and Elena Kagan in opposing the decision.

Mont had previously been convicted on felony drug and gun charges and served 84 months in prison before beginning a five-year supervised release due to end in March 2017.

Trump bucks his own party again. This time, it's on importing drugs from Canada

Source: CNN

(CNN)President Donald Trump's latest plan to lower drug prices is drawing concerns from Health Secretary Alex Azar, a former pharmaceutical executive who has called drug importation a "gimmick."

The President is embracing a controversial Florida proposal to import drugs from Canada, which Republicans have long opposed and many health experts have questioned.

The measure -- backed by Florida Republicans Gov. Rick DeSantis and Rep. Matt Gaetz, both close Trump allies -- requires federal approval. Trump has spoken highly of the idea and has told Azar to pursue the issue as a way to reduce the cost of prescription drugs.

But as recently as last week, Azar expressed reservations during a meeting with Trump, DeSantis and Gaetz, prompting a "spirited discussion," Gaetz told CNN.

Pop Will Eat Itself drummer Fuzz Townshend says he dipped his penis in Boris Johnson's pint

Former Pop Will Eat Itself drummer Fuzz Townshend has admitted that he seized the “opportunity of a lifetime” after buying a pint for Boris Johnson.

The Car SOS host recalled how the pair share mutual friends, and the leading Tory Brexiteer turned up just as he was getting his round in.

The musician and TV host said he secretly went to the toilets and “dipped his knob” into Boris’ pint of real ale.

“He arrived as it was my round,” said Townshend. “So I said ‘Would you like a drink?’ I was drinking a pint of real ale and he said ‘What’s that like?’ I said ‘yeah, it was pretty good’ so he said ‘I’ll have one of those’.

A jury has found Chanel Lewis guilty on all counts at his retrial for the murder of New York City jogger Karina Vetrano.

Lewis was found guilty of murder and sexual abuse in connection with the death of 30-year-old Vetrano, who vanished while out for a run in her Howard Beach neighborhood in August 2016.

The jury reached the verdict on Monday evening, after five hours of deliberation. Closing arguments wrapped up in the afternoon, after a nearly three-week-long trial.

In a statement issued on behalf of Queens District Attorney Richard Brown Monday evening, Chief Assistant District Attorney John Ryan called Vetrano's death "a horrifying case."

It's Daylight Savings Time!

I love this time of the season. Yeah, we lose an hour but to me this signifies the first important step to ending Winter, and that Spring is around the corner. Love that it gets dark later too! Some people don't like the adjustments, but it's never taken me more than a day or two to get used to. Anyway:
