Costco Ken tries to explain his meltdown

Man shown in viral Costco video shares what he experienced

A man in Southwest Florida has received attention in a video that went viral after being posted to the internet. He was shown angrily yelling toward a fellow customer at a Costco after she asked him to wear a mask and follow the store’s policy. Now, the man was able to share his side of the story and explain how the video’s attention has affected him.

Dan Maples in Bonita Springs says his life has been turned upside down. He lost his job and says people are leaving him disturbing messages, telling him they wish he contracted the coronavirus. It all happened after a video shared online showed him enraged at a Costco at Gulf Coast Town Center in Lee County recently.

Maples spoke to radio host Trey Radel on the Drive on 92.5 FOX News Friday, and told him there is more to the video that was shared.

“What you don’t see in the video is me pleading with the person to please stop and get away from me,” Maples told Radel. “I got backed into a corner. It was not something I deal with on a daily basis, someone screaming at me and filming me and trying to rally a mob against me.

Maples says what was shown in the video is not a depiction of how he normally behaves.

“I lost my control,” Maples said. “I gave someone else the opportunity and power to escalate my emotions.”

Maples says it all started when an senior citizen asked him to put on a mask in the back of the store.

“Tthe woman was telling me she had cancer,” Maples said.

Maples says he thought back to his dad.

“I’m sorry I’m not as sensitive about that,” Maples said. “That’s something if you say to me when I watched my dad die in my arms, then, why are you at Costco?”

Maples says he was wearing a mask but took it off.

“I can’t breathe when I have the mask,” Maples said. “I feel like I’m suffocating. I feel claustrophobic, drowning type thing.”

The man behind the camera says he cut in to help the woman, and Maples screamed.

But Maples has a different account of the interaction at Costco.

“Runs and screams at best of my recollection, ‘9,000 new cases, 9000 new cases. This man isn’t wearing a mask,’” Maples recalled.

Once the video surfaced Tuesday, Maples says he quickly learned he lost his job.

“Things are tough enough,” Maples said. “Initially, losing my job causes a lot of panic. Because, at this point, we rely on that and immediately causes panic. ‘Hey, I just got fired.’ My son goes, ‘Hey, dad, you’re a failure.’”

Ted Todd insurance agency in Bonita Springs, Maples former company, says this behavior is in direct conflict with its company values.

Maples said he’s now receiving threats. He says that is something that really needs to be changed in society.

“Society needs to look at the bigger picture and the toll it takes on people,” Maples said. “It’s not a meme. It’s a life. I worked so hard for so long to become who I was, and, now, it’s all for nothing.”

The man behind the video did not want to be identified in fear of safety for him and his family. Costco did not want to comment on the video, but their policy states customers and employees are required to wear a mask inside the store.

Now, Maples is looking for some form of recourse.

“At this point, I want my life back,” Maples said.

THE VILLAGES MIGHT BE TRUMP'S BASTION AMONG RETIREES--BUT WE ARE THE RESISTANCE

Confession time: My name is Marsha Shearer and I live in The Villages, Florida. Yes, that place: the place where a golf-cart driver was filmed yelling "white power", and made it all the way to Trump's Twitter feed, via a presidential retweet. We are
now firmly known to the world as the heart of Trump country, full of ill-behaved retirees—with a bunch of racists thrown into the mix. Even before Trump came along, this was identified as the Conservative and/or Republican bastion in Florida. Both of these descriptions are accurate, but they are not the whole story; far from it. And while this is the belly of the beast for those with progressive, liberal, left-leaning beliefs and values, I wouldn't live anyplace else.

First, that video needs to be put in context. What happened on that day in July is a glimpse in miniature of what it's like living in The Villages. Earlier that day, several hundred people met in the Square, the community's gathering place, to solemnly acknowledge and share the pain resulting from the murder of George Floyd. Poems and essays were read, community members voiced their grief, and there was a communal sense of loss and commonality of emotion and purpose. The hour ended in silent kneeling for 8 minutes and 46 seconds. People carried signs saying 'Black Lives Matter.' Mine said "Are we great yet? #Black Lives Matter." The other side of the sign quoted Martin Luther King; "Our lives begin to end when we become silent about things that matter."

Immediately following our event, a golf cart rally was scheduled in support of Trump and to celebrate his birthday. Talk about lousy timing. Several hundred golf carts took a drive around the Square honking horns and yelling support. That's where the video came from. It was embarrassing, disgusting, confrontational and sickening.

So there you have it: juxtaposed opposites, two groups splintered from one another while living and interacting in the same community. But that's only part of a complicated picture.

Ari Melber gave props to Sista Souljah!

Much respect to Sista Souljah - She was doing it and taking lots of heat when it wasn't easy to call out white folks in the way that she did. You had both sides of aisle coming for her neck. I'm not going to post what a former dem president said, since its frowned on DU to criticize democrats. I want to keep this thread going so I am not going to get into that conversation. That's not the point of this thread. It was nice to see a mainstream journalist give her props after she was so vilified in the past.

If you missed Ari's piece - it was about how black musicians have been talking about racism and police brutality from Sam Cooke, Billie Holliday, KRS One, NWA, Sista Souljah, Tupac and others. He talked about how white America dismissed what black artists have been saying for so many years. To the point of the Govt and the FBI getting involved.

I wonder how Sista Souljah's message would be received today? Not what they wanted her to be or painted her out to be. But actually listened to her. A lot of white folks sound a lot like her today when they talk about white supremacy and structural racism. It just sounds less militant coming from white folks.

Texas Pastor Apologizes For Allowing Hugging At Church After Dozens Contract COVID-19

Texas Pastor Apologizes For Allowing Hugging At Church After Dozens Contract COVID-19
At least 50 coronavirus cases have emerged at Calvary Chapel of San Antonio, which had been meeting in person since May, according to Pastor Ron Arbaugh

A Texas pastor has apologized for failing to keep people socially distanced at his evangelical church, after he and dozens of congregants reportedly tested positive for COVID-19.

Calvary Chapel of San Antonio has held multiple indoor, in-person services since it reopened in early May, right after Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) let the state’s stay-at-home order expire. As hospitalizations and positivity rates surged in Texas over the past few weeks, members of the church began testing positive for the novel coronavirus.

The church has at least 50 cases of the novel coronavirus, lead pastor Ron Arbaugh told NBC-affiliate WOAI-TV on Saturday. Most of the positive cases are staff members ― including Arbaugh, his wife, at least one other main pastor, and children’s ministry staff. The majority of impacted individuals have reported mild symptoms, the pastor said.

The rise in cases prompted the church, based in Universal City on the border of San Antonio, to briefly suspend large in-person services.

Arbaugh and Calvary Chapel of San Antonio did not immediately return HuffPost’s request for comment.
