Old Crank's JournalLong time lurker
Short time poster.
I was advised that I might like this group after I posted to the DU Lounge about liking to cook.
I will look around to see what is up.
Have done a fair amount of cooking in my life. Including working with a couple of commercial chefs
for weddings. Not my idea of a relaxing job.
Been asked if I ever would open a restaurant. No. I don't want to WORK for a living.
I enjoy cooking for family, friends, and guests.
Currently in Germany. Learning how to work under different circumstances. A great adventure.
I like to cook
I do the lion's share of cooking at my house. So it is nice to find some simple
quick recipes. Lately I have been watching and learning from some videos by Jaques
Pepin on Youtube. Creamed mushrooms. Easy and his delivery is mater of fact.
Watched a couple of his crepe videos. Easy as pie, and better than the recipe that
I had been using, quicker also.
Here is something that I came up with. Takes as long to cook as boiling rice.
Bag of frozen asian style veggies into a hot pan with a little oil. When they are cooked
add the chopped up meat from half a rotisserie chicken, add a cup of sweat spicy
Thai sauce. Heat through. If too dry add more sauce or a bit of water.
I put rice in a shallow bowl and invert that onto a wide soup bowl and surround the rice with
the chicken veggie mix.
Got a notice from my insurance company
I live in Germany for almost 7 years now. While here I was refered to get a
cochlear implant because I am effectively deaf in my right ear. That was done about
4 year ago. Surgery, 4 nights in the hosipital cost E 40. Early this year my processor
and batteries were giving me troubles. I ended up getting 3 replacement batteries.
Then the processor unit failed. That was replaced 2 days after I reported it.
The message from my insurance company showed me what I owed.
The batteries billed out to $800ish.
The processor unit billed at $1400.
I get billed for Nothing.
I'm not sure I can move back to the US and afford the replacement parts
when needed for the electronic ear.

Now on the road to Bern, Switzerland.
Arrived in the early spring after visiting some friends in Zurich.
I got grey overcast for my photographic pleasure.

There is an art alley in Berling, at least one.
We start with a more classical statue then the graffitti style works and a
coin operated machine.
Not a woman to piss off.

Berlin
This is a monument to the Jews murdered or shipped out to be murdered in other places
Very sobering.
The US still has a long way to go to come to grips with its own history of brutality against Native Americans, Blacks and actions in other far flung countries.

More from Berlin. This is a serious set remembering the dark past.
Germany has done as well as any country in living with the past atrocities
which were committed in its name.
One picture shows the Topography of Terror, site that had the SS headquarters and jail.
A part of the Berlin wall forms one boundary.
It is a hard place to visit.
Around Berlin and other cities are Stoppelstein. these brass memorials note where
Jews had lived before either having been forced out of Germany or shipped to camps.
I will have pretty pictures tomorrow.
Bricks mark the former Berlin wall location

A quick hit in Berlin. Running late today.
These are from the Sony Center. A group of high-rise's placed together
around a central court with a fun roof. Lighted at night.
Details of the roof system can be found at this link. It is a very impressive structure.
