Old Crank
Old Crank's JournalDay 6 in a scheduled 8 days of rain
Having done my chores I end up digging around in my mind and my german lernen.
German has 3 genders, Masculine, der, Feminine, die, and neuter, das. This presents interesting things as in spoon, fork, and knife are masc. fem. and neuter. Der Leoffel, die Gabbel, and das Messer.
Now we all know that Car is neuter in German from the VW ads. Das Auto.
We know that BMW, Honda and Suzuki make cars and Motorcycles.
How do you tell if someone is talking about their car or bike or comparing them?
Easy. The car name is Masculine, der, and the motorcycle is Feminine, die.
We move on to Yamaha. Pianos and motorcycles.
The Yamaha motorcycle is feminine and Pianos are neuter. So you can tell if someone rode on their Yamaha to play on their Yamaha.
I think some Hazelnut schnaps is calling my name...
Just to be clear
Just to be clear; it needs to be said that every Republican that voted against raising the debt limit voted against federal aid to Florida.
I am helping a person who might need housing/room rental for 2 months in Baltimore
My friend, German, he speaks good English, may have a 2 month stint at John's Hopkins. Don't know if it is the hospital or the University. He would be on his own with his family staying in Bern. Time frame seems to be around January and February.
I don't know much else about this at this time.
Just thought I would throw this out there because I hope to see him this weekend.
Oktoberfest and disease?
My wife and I get German news since we live here. Surprisingly there have been reports about Covid, sanitation, and risks during this massive party. Some one printed a story about dish sanitation with concerns that they use cold water for dish washing. Have fore years but all use a chlorine rinse. Saves a huge amount of energy when each tent is cooking for around 7,000 people for 12 hours a day.
Now this year the crowds at the event or in the tents have not been as large as in 2019, last one pre Covid. There is a combination of bad weather and some people have stayed away because of the worry of infection. Every year there is what people call the Oktoberfest Grippe, flu that last about a week longer than the event. Surprise. Put thousands of people in a closed environment, singing and dancing and drinking and ...
The Covid numbers are up from the start fo the event. They are only about 50% higher than the country as a whole. It will be interesting to see what the numbers show by a week after when both types of plague start to decline. Also in the mix will be people who do get Covid but won't report because it will be just like the regular flu to them.
What could have both helped reduce the spread, or increased the spread is the rain. Looks like only 2 days out of the 17 this year will be sunny. Sunny puts more people, during the day in the outdoor seating. It also means more people coming to the event.
I'm hoping the weather report is correct and we get some sun on the last day so I can go to the Oide Wiesen, old style, section and get some pictures of classic farm vehicles and the like.
Some pictures from the anniversary
the Oktoberfest, originally the wedding party for Ludwig I and Therese, Oct. 17, 1810. We had originally reserved a table for the evening. However we couldn't get a large enough group to show up. Some of the problem, weeknight, and a number of people we know have Covid angst. We will see in a few days if we dodged the plague. Didn't seem to slow down tourists. We managed to dodge rain going and coming and around the park.

The "Champaign tent" Sekt in German, and tent?
Souvenir gingerbread, lebkuchen.
A candy and sweets stand.
Inside a tent, Lowenbrau, can hold 7,500 people on 2 levels with band stand.
The Nederlanders were represented.
After we left the tent, we did this... freakin' cold up there.
The result of both sidesism
I am digging through my emails and news letters.
This it just too true and is the result of the press not doing its job. Not calling out pure fraud at every step and trying to present both sides as if there was equal value.

Today is a big day for me
I have managed to not upset the apple cart and stay married for 25 years. To the same woman.
She must be working on sainthood, or something similar, to have put up with me.
We will head off to the Oktoberfest this PM in our regalia for the evening. We haven't worn it since pre-covid and hope everything fits...
It is too bas that the weather is bad. We just have to make the big decision about which tent in which to celebrate.
German lessons
I live in Germany so I keep plugging away at the language. Everyday I use Duolingo to learn more things.
I had gone through all the exercises a while back and then they changed the whole thing. That is good but it wiped out a couple of years of progress in their system. I'm plugging away and the lessons, on the whole, are better now. IMHO.
There are now things that are more important to cultural German than before. Learning a language also involves learning some culture. There is a section on Germany and different areas are mentioned, even if it is superficial. This past weekend I got to a new exercise.
It is a section with lesson involving Spargel, asparagus. This is really important with Spargelzeit, asparagus time, being a very important season at least around Munich.
I now have a sargeltopf, asparagus pot, for cooking it. Fun.
No. I am not a creature of habit
Just because I keep checking the microwave that went pop last week for the time of day.
I opened the door, the light flashed and the circuit popped leaving only stove, 480v circuit, left with power.
Well 6 years for 100 bucks isn't too bad.
