Hamburg, The Smoking Chords

Went to the Altona market in Hamburg, Sundays early. They had a band playing. Really early for a band since the market starts packing up shortly after 9 AM. They played until 10. Shot some pictures of them playing. From ground level and the walkway above.

They didn't have any special lighting for the concert.

Kareem Abdul Jabar takes down DeSantis

I hadn't realised how well versed Mr. Jabar was until a member of this site posted a bit from his blog the other week.
Here he takes on DeSantis's rant about SF and lets peopel know that Miami is worse than SF by a large margin.

From his post.

DeSantis Warns Of 'Woke' In Bizarre Speech Claiming He Saw 'People Defecating' In Public (Huffpost)
SUMMARY: Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) claimed he recently saw “people defecating on the sidewalk” — an act he chalked up to “woke” ideology — during a speech at a Faith & Freedom Coalition event Friday.

…“When woke overtakes our criminal justice system — like it has in San Francisco, like it has in Los Angeles — the average person becomes less safe in their communities as a result,” said DeSantis, who vowed to leave “woke ideology in the dustbin of history.”

“Don’t tell me it doesn’t affect people’s lives. I was just in San Francisco. I saw — in 20 minutes on the ground — people defecating on the sidewalk. I saw people using fentanyl. I saw people smoking crack right there in the open, right there on the street. It was a civilization in decay.”

MY TAKE: Wow! DeSantis got quite the 20-minute tour of San Francisco. In that time, I can barely get some Ghiradelli chocolate. Has he toured Miami lately? Does he know that his own state has a higher drug mortality rate than California (37.5 per 100,000 versus 26.6)? As Governor, I’m sure he knows that Miami has a higher violent crime rate than San Francisco. Ranked from a low of 1 to a high of 100, based on FBI data, Miami is rated 48.8 in violent crime as opposed to San Francisco’s 39.6.

Wait, there’s more. Miami had such a problem with people pooping in the streets that they actually made a map warning where to avoid (“Miami has a serious street poop problem, so they created this street poop map”). Of course I’m going to show you the map:

Some archetectural details

From Luneburg. Bit of buildings and just imagining how much craftmanship goes into making these things with the limited tools available in and around 1500-1700.

Luneburg home of Backsteingotik

That is baked stone gothic or brick gothic as we would call it. Some of the buildings will not respond to a PC lense. The walls are leaning in a usually backwards and sometime twisted direction. A wonder how some are standing.
They were mostly built in the towns heyday (saltdays) before the herring industry in Sweden collapsed, 1540. Fortunes changed and it slid into neglect. In 1945 it was next to the place where the German instrument of surender was signed. Himmler also commited suiced there. in the 1960s the mayor and others wanted to tear down all the old buildings and redevelop. That was halted adn it is now a picture postcard town.

Also incase you aren't familiar, the beams that stick out were there as hoists to get goods up to the different floors.

Yesterday I made Rhubarb ginger jam and today it was Apricot.

In the next couple of days I will be making pickle relish. It is just too expensive to by here in Munich.

Luneburg Farmer's Market

We went from Bremen to a small town we had dropped into for just a few hours a couple of years ago. We decided to stay a couple on nights before hitting Hamburg. This town has been around for a while and was part of the Hanseatic group. It became rich because of salt for treating fish in Sweden and a nieghboring city snubed the crown and got wiped out.
So I hit the market while my wife took care of some business.

St. Petri Dom, Bremen

This cathedral has too many details to present here. It was a small church before Charlemange came by in 787 AD and the current structure started construction in1042. A lot os new stained glass. Originals broken over the years and in the war. I was lucky enough to show up for the early afternoon brief organ concert. I love the organs in these buildings.
