Texas' 2020 early voting surpasses total turnout in 2016 election

(CNN)More than 9 million people have voted early in the key state of Texas, surpassing the state's total turnout from the 2016 general election, with one more day of in-person early voting remaining Friday ahead of Election Day.

Texans cast 8.96 million ballots in the 2016 presidential election, according to the Texas secretary of state's website.

This election cycle, there are signs of an energized electorate as pre-Election Day voting, either by mail or in-person, has skyrocketed amid the coronavirus pandemic and states are reporting record-breaking turnout.

The high turnout this election so far accounts for more than half -- 53% -- of registered voters in the Lone Star State. The number of total registered voters has grown 12% since 2016 -- almost 1.9 million people.

Newsom: California taking precautions for 'whatever may occur' after polls close

It looks like our governor is anticipating unrest after the polls close on Tuesday. I really am kind of afraid of what is going to happen post election.


SACRAMENTO — Gov. Gavin Newsom said Thursday that California is taking precautions in case of civil unrest on election night amid an emotional and partisan presidential campaign, in a state where voters overwhelmingly oppose President Donald Trump.

"As it relates to making sure people are safe, making sure not only the process of voting is a safe and healthy one, but keeping people safe after the election for whatever may occur, the answer is yes, we are always gaming out different scenarios and making sure that we are prepared,” the governor said when asked about possible election night chaos.

(CNN)Justice Amy Coney Barrett recited the judicial oath Tuesday morning in a swearing-in ceremony administered by Chief Justice John Roberts, officially beginning her tenure as the 115th justice on the Supreme Court -- and was greeted with a request to recuse herself from a key election-related case.

The ceremony took place in the East Conference Room of the court and Barrett is seen a photo shared by the court with her right hand raised and left hand placed on a family Bible held by her husband, Jesse, as she took the oath.
All Supreme Court justices participated in the ceremony except Justice Stephen Breyer, who listened by phone from his home in Cambridge and felt it was safest to avoid travel and attend virtually, according to the court's public information officer Kathy Arberg.
