Are people getting more oblivious nowadys?

Is it just me, or are people getting more oblivious to their surroundings? Meandering down the middle of the aisle at the supermarket, walking down the middle of the driveway at the parking lot, driving, turning, and not even always when they're on the phone. Just totally unaware of others around them.

Just this morning at Trader Joe's, a lady was walking down the middle of the driveway in the parking lot, taking her own sweet time, apparently in la-la land. I so wanted to come up behind her and blast my horn, but I wasn't raised that way. When she finally moved aside to get in her car and I passed her slowly, she glared at me like how dare I pass her.

I know my username is grumpy duck, but, really, anybody else notice this?

Dumbasses, Covid, and elections.

This thought struck me this morning: that asshole in FL and a few of his buddies are doing their darndest to kill off their own people. As has been pointed out, most of the people who catch or die from Covid seem to be conservative-minded.

So, who do these assholes think will vote for them once they kill off their own constituents?

Simone Biles and the RW media

[begin rant]

After reading a few items this morning on the RW media coming down on Simone, three things seem obvious:

1) The RW media is doing this in their continuing efforts to feed their readers bullshit they can get mad about. Apparently the RW media thinks their readers are gluttons for anger, which says a lot about both the media and their followers. Either that, or the RW media is in cahoots with companies that make blood-pressure meds -- which would make an interesting plot for a movie.

2) At the same time, they're using this as just another distraction, in this case from the hearings.

3) They're basically saying that Simone (and, by extension, other athletes) is a commodity -- an object for their amusement. So the fact that she's worked her butt off to be able to do what she does is totally irrelevant to the folks who sit on their fat asses all day swilling beer and finding stuff to get angry about.

So, in my humble opinion, fuck them all.

I'm confused about January 6.

Reading CNN just now, it seems Republicans are saying Jan 6 was peaceful and quiet. But they're also saying Antifa, or the FBI, incited the riot.

So yeah, I'm confused... were there two parallel universes going that day?

CNN: "Subpoenas are coming "soon" from Jan. 6 select committee, panel chair says"

Chair Bennie Thompson told CNN that the select committee will “soon” issue subpoenas, but he declined to say who would be targeted.

He said the panel won’t resort to writing letters for voluntary information — and will instead go straight to subpoenas.

“Letters just lengthen the time. We just want to get it all done,” he told CNN off camera.

Thompson also said they plan to meet with Attorney General Merrick Garland soon because they want access to all relevant data. He added they would seek information gathered by impeachment investigators about the Jan. 6 attack.

Good. Screw the letters. Go right for the subpoenas.

And I hope they have plans for what to do about those who ignore them.

How do you feel about friends who discuss their medical issues in detail?

Not sure if this us the right forum for this, but here goes.

We've known several people who like to talk about their medical issues in detail. One friend, for instance, liked to talk about his kidney stones. Back when I was growing up, this was considered a no-no, but things change.

So, out of curiosity, how do you feel about this?

Second-guessing Biden on the vote today

Sorry if this has already been posted.

It occurred to me that, in a pretzel-brained sort of way (this is about politics, after all), it might be a good thing if the Repugs vote it down. From what I've seen of Biden, he took the gloves off on Jan 21.

So I wonder if he's already planned on doing something along the lines of getting a special prosecutor to do the investigation. It would be fantastic optics for him -- "Hey, I tried working with you guys, but it didn't work and we're going to get to the bottom of this one way or another." It would by-pass all the namby-pamby BS of giving the Repugs what they wanted, and it might even implicate some of them.

And, to get even more Machiavellian, I have to wonder if Pelosi gave in on some of their demands figuring this would happen.

[Edit: deleted "appoint a special prosecutor."]

So it seems that last year the former guy wanted to ban grated cheese.

He wanted to make America grate again.

My avatar vanished.

My avatar up and vanished one day. I've tried getting a new one several times but nothing happened. Even a call to the moderators didn't get a response. Any ideas?

Something I don't understand about multiple-gun owners

I'm not a gun person. I was in the Army and shot several weapons and got my marksmanship badge and all, but otherwise I have no interest in them. Which brings up a question.

I have an old-time friend who's been into guns and target-shooting (and hunting, many years ago) for well over forty years. Now he has a collection of rifles and handguns stored in a safe. Let's just say he is with the camp that believes Uncle Sam may come over someday to take his weapons and wants to be ready to defend himself. Thus the weapons and lots of ammo.

But he lives in a free-standing, two-story house with windows on three sides. Even if his wife were to get in on the action, which is doubtful, they could only defend one or two positions at a time. So what, I've asked myself several times, is he thinking? I avoid talking with him about politics to avoid a shouting match, but one of these days I would really like to figure out how that computes.
