voting rights activities marshalling resources to overcome voting suppression in Dodge City KS

New voters in Dodge City, Kan., given wrong polling location

https://www.mercurynews.com/2018/10/25/new-voters-in-dodge-city-kan-given-wrong-polling-location/

The southwest Kansas city, located 160 miles west of Wichita, has only one polling site for its 27,000 residents. For nearly two decades, that site was at the civic center in the mostly white part of town.

But citing road construction, officials recently moved it for the November election to the Expo Center outside of town and more than a mile from the nearest bus stop.

“I didn’t know this could get worse, and it did: ‘Hey, let’s move the site and not tell new registrants where they are supposed to go,'” said Johnny Dunlap, chairman of the Ford County Democratic Party.

Local election officials are now scrambling to notify newly registered voters who might be confused by its official registration notice that listed only their regular polling site — not the temporary site for the November election. At the same time, voting rights activists are marshalling their resources to get Dodge City voters to the new polling place — an effort boosted by an outpouring of money and volunteers after widespread national coverage.

Kansas Director of Elections Bryan Caskey admitted that the notices were “confusing,” and said he told Ford County Clerk Debbie Cox that she needed to “inform the voters.” He added that the county is sending another notice to affected registrant

Michael Hayden on CNN: "The way the president speaks, the way he acts, his mannerisms, his tone, have moved the center line of American political discourse ... There's a reason that the other 44 Presidents of the U.S. have not spoken the way this president routinely speaks."

Trumps new political foil..an imaginary California (taking lies to new heights)

https://www.washingtonpost.com/amphtml/politics/2018/10/23/trump-has-new-go-to-political-foil-an-imaginary-version-california/

President Trump’s embrace of campaigning in recent weeks has meant a lot of time spent delivering off-the-cuff comments into microphones, which in turn has meant a lot of assertions that are obviously false or likely made up on the spot.

Among the ways in which Trump deploys his imagination during his rallies is by telling stories about people who, by all appearances, are nonexistent but whom Trump introduces to bolster his policy or political standing. There was, for example, “Jim,” a friend who once told Trump that he would no longer visit Paris, a city he loved, because of the threat of terrorism. There are numerous unnamed business leaders who tell Trump about things they’ve done that bolster the president rhetorically or who praise his decisions. And there are battalions of people who come up to Trump with the same introduction: “Sir,” they’ll say, then set up a straw man for Trump to decapitate.

In recent rallies, a new imaginary figure has entered Trump’s rotation: a version of California that better resembles the fever dream of a Breitbart columnist than the state itself. Trump introduces this California as a foil mostly for his rhetoric about immigration but also, it seems, because his efforts to tie progressive policies to problems in Venezuela (another frequent trope of late) may be more effective when linked to a state already treated with skepticism by his base.

So what are we talking about? Things like this, from his rally in Arizona on Friday.

“That’s why Democrats want to give illegal immigrants the right to vote. How about in California, where illegal immigrants took over the town council, and now the town council is run by illegal immigrants in the town!” he exclaimed. “I mean, is this even believable?”

Trump is at the top of his dangerous game

https://www.cnn.com/2018/10/24/politics/donald-trump-midterms-immigration-oval-office/index.html

Donald Trump fixed reporters with a hard gaze and declared: "I'm a very nonpolitical person, and that's why I got elected President."

Like much of what Trump says, his comment required a large helping of salt, since it came in a session in which his considerable, instinctive and often cynical political prowess was on full display 14 days before the midterm elections.

With reporters and lawmakers huddled around his Oval Office desk Tuesday, Trump floated conspiracy theories, boasted about his achievements, bent facts, teased future announcements and dipped into a well of racial and cultural prejudice.

Such behavior is more often displayed by autocratic leaders who rule in personality cults than by more cautious and conventional politicians who operate in democratic systems, but it also explains how Trump has bullied much of Washington into submission.

------

Trump's virtuoso flexing of his significant but often diabolical political skills came on a day when he had no campaign rally. So he just manufactured a moment to add more fuel to the rhetorical blaze he has ignited over immigration.

"It doesn't matter if it's 100 percent accurate," "this is the play"

https://www.thedailybeast.com/trumps-own-teams-know-his-caravan-claims-arent-true-dont-particularly-care

Donald Trump and his political allies have embarked on an aggressive, end-of-the-campaign effort to drum up fear among voters about a caravan of poor migrants several thousand miles from the U.S.-Mexico border. Much of it is mistruths and embellishments, but Trumpland could care less.

“It doesn’t matter if it’s 100 percent accurate,” a senior Trump administration official told The Daily Beast. “This is the play.”

Leaked audio. GOP candidate Kemp expresses concern that people will vote

Facing allegations of voter suppression, scrutiny from voting rights groups, and calls to resign from his opponent, Georgia secretary of state and current GOP gubernatorial candidate Brian Kemp recently said that Stacey Abrams’s voter outreach effort “continues to concern us, especially if everybody uses and exercises their right to vote,” according to a new report.
