A Juilliard-trained concert pianist who has performed all over the world faces murder charges after being accused of stabbing a vet tech to death in her South Carolina home last month, say police.
On Wednesday, Zachary David Hughes, 29, of Greenville, was arrested in connection with the October slaying of Christina Larain Parcell, 41, of Greer, Greenville County Sheriff Hobart Lewis announced at a press conference Thursday.
"It was a very brutal crime scene," Lewis said.
On Oct. 13, shortly after 11 a.m., deputies were dispatched to 122 Canebrake Drive in Greer after a woman, since identified as Parcell, was found deceased inside the home by someone familiar with her, Lewis said.
Parcell had been "brutally stabbed multiple times," he said, adding that she leaves behind a young daughter.
During their investigation, investigators "discovered physical evidence that linked Hughes to the crime," said Lewis, "and ultimately led investigators to believe him to be the person responsible" for Parcell's death, he said.

three men arrested for assault of transgender woman
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Police have arrested three people accused of assaulting a transgender woman near the OSU campus.
In the early hours of Oct. 24, a woman reported that three men walked into the 7-Eleven on NW Kings Boulevard and assaulted her. She said the men used homophobic and transphobic slurs.
Detectives with the Corvallis Police Department said their investigation led them to the Roseburg area on Nov. 4, where they arrested three suspects who were taken to the Benton County Jail:
Dylan Guido, 21, of Roseburg was charged with first-degree bias crime and third-degree assault.
Riley Westbrooks, 21, of Myrtle Creek was charged with first-degree bias crime and third-degree assault
Kyle Rackley, 22, of Sutherlin was charged with third-degree assault.

As local news outlet KRNV first reported, the spikes were discovered Oct. 5 by a mountain biker who suffered a flat tire while riding on the trail. About 12 spikes were inside the biker’s tire, Thea Hardy, the spokesperson for the Tahoe Area Mountain Biking Association (TAMBA), told SFGATE.
The unnamed female mountain biker removed the spikes shortly after; there have been no attempts to repopulate the area with metal spikes since then, according to TAMBA.
A day after the organization shared the news on social media, new reports came in from other mountain bikers who suffered flats.
“They had been buried in the dirt across the trail in a few different spots nearby as well,” Hardy said in an interview.

Man's Guilty Plea Tossed Out By Judge After Bodycam Video Shows NYPD Cop Planting Drugs
A New York man who pleaded guilty to drug charges following a 2018 arrest has had his plea tossed out by a judge after bodycam footage revealed an NYPD officer planted drugs in the car in which he was pulled over.
Defendant Jason Serrano was charged with drug possession, resisting arrest and obstructing governmental administration following an NYPD traffic stop. He pleaded guilty to the resisting arrest charge in order to avoid going to the notorious Rikers Island prison.
At the time of his plea in 2018, Serrano was unaware of the bodycam footage, which shows officer Kyle Erickson sprinkling what appears to be marijuana into the car's cupholder.
Records obtained via a Freedom of Information Act request by New York NPR station WNYC and Gothamist revealed Erickson had been disciplined twice by the NYPD in 2018 and had a history of discrepancies in drug arrests he performed. These include an incident in which he was caught planting drugs on a Black man he'd pulled over that same year.

Colorado Gun Shop Owner Killed Wife, 2 Children Before Taking His Own Life
Police in Colorado Springs allege that a man killed his wife and two of their nine children before taking his own life on Saturday.
According to the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, 55-year-old Christof Kreb killed his wife of 26 years, Yvette Siegert-Kreb, 50, and two of their children, Felicity Kreb, 13, and Barrett Kreb, 9.
When deputies arrived at the scene, they found all four family members dead. Police have not yet released the cause and manner of their deaths, nor have they released a motive for the slayings.
According to The Denver Post, Christof was a part owner and registered agent of Specialty Sports and Supply, a gun shop in Colorado Springs. He and his wife were both Army veterans, and she was a retired neonatal intensive care unit nurse.

Martinelli & Company, ever dreamed of for the 153-year-old apple cider and juice company, but when celebrities like Lizzo caught wind of the trend and wanted to see whether chomping into it actually produced a distinct apple crunch, Martinelli’s seemed to be on the mind of everyone who wanted to debunk the myth for themselves. One by one, the TikTok crowd posed for videos where they’d take a sip of Martinelli’s apple juice, put the cap back on, and then bite into thick plastic.
“What we're being told is that something like 500 million people either saw the video or contributed their own video,” Martinelli said. “We sold it for a whole bunch of years, and nothing ever happened until this. It's kind of funny because that was the first time I learned what an influencer was.”
Martinelli admits the crisp sound was an accidental feature of the bottle. In fact, in its early development, he thought consumers might think it was a defect, but it’s actually a clever design intended to keep the juice at its freshest.
“In our bottle, we have two layers of [plastic] with an oxygen barrier in between,” Martinelli said. “So, it's a three-part bottle and when you dent it, the oxygen barrier in the middle delaminates and it slides between the two hard plastic layers and makes it squeak.” (But leave it to the internet to debunk that one, too).
