the student at Lehigh who poisoned his roommate... a 2nd case emerges

COLLEGE POISONING SUSPECT TRIES TO FLEE U.S. AS POSSIBLE 2ND CASE EMERGES

A former Lehigh University student charged with poisoning his roommate posted $200,000 cash bail and hoped to be deported to China to avoid prosecution, a prosecutor said Thursday. Yukai Yang, 23, was back in local custody after authorities learned of the plan and had him returned from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody to the Northampton County Jail in Pennsylvania.

Prosecutors are now asking a judge to keep Yang locked up without bail, calling him a “legitimate flight risk.”

They are meanwhile investigating whether a second student was also poisoned with the chemical thallium.

That is in the early stages of investigation. It came to light essentially after the publication of these charges,” District Attorney John Morganelli said.

“Mr. Yang thought that because he is a foreign national, now here illegally in that his student visa has been revoked, that he could post bail, waive his right to a deportation hearing and abscond,” Morganelli said in a statement. “That will not happen.”

He believed that Yang’s mother posted the cash bail this past week. Court papers identify the person as Hua Shi. Yang’s lawyer did not immediately return a call for comment Thursday.

A black man was on the phone with his mom while in a hotel lobby -- and then the police were called

A black man was on the phone with his mom while in a hotel lobby -- and then the police were called

A guest at a Portland hotel is alleging he was harassed by staff when he was asked to leave the property after taking a phone call in the hotel lobby late Saturday night.

Washington state resident Jermaine Massey was in the lobby of the Portland DoubleTree when a security guard informed him that police were on their way to escort him off the property.

In a series of Instagram videos of the incident recorded by Massey and obtained by CNN, he is heard asking the guard, "But why? But I'm staying here." "Not anymore," the security guard replies.

Massey then told a hotel desk staffer that he was taking a personal phone call in the lobby when the guard began to question why he was there. At one point in the videos, he shows the two men his keycard envelope with the room number and date written on it.

---------------

update: employees put on leave. Hotel apologizing. Watch the video... the security guard had absolutely NO REASON to call the cops.

Trump Administration Suggests Furloughed Workers Do Chores for Landlords to Help Pay Rent

https://www.thedailybeast.com/trump-administration-suggests-furloughed-workers-do-chores-for-landlords-to-help-pay-rent

The U.S. Office of Personnel Management on Thursday tweeted advice to furloughed federal workers on how to explain their precarious financial situation to creditors and landlords—including one sample letter with the suggestion that they offer to perform chores in exchange for rent payments. “I will keep in touch with you to keep you informed about my income status and I would like to discuss with you the possibility of trading my services to perform maintenance (e.g. painting, carpentry work) in exchange for partial rent payments,” one sample letter to a landlord read.

The agency also urged workers to “please consult with your personal attorney” for any required legal advice amid the partial government shutdown, during which nearly 800,000 workers have either been furloughed or asked to work without pay. On Thursday night, prospects looked even grimmer as the House and Senate both adjourned for the weekend, guaranteeing the shutdown will continue until at least next week.
