Thousands of flamingo chicks rescued from dried-out South African dam

Thousands of flamingo chicks have been airlifted from their dried-out habitat in northern South Africa in a desperate attempt to save them.

Around 2,000 Lesser Flamingo juveniles were rescued from the Kamfers Dam near Kimberley at the end of January, after their parents abandoned them following a significant drop in the dam's water levels brought on by drought conditions in the northern Cape.
The Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB), one of the organizations caring for the chicks, has been canvassing for donations of food and cash, and volunteers to hand-feed the stricken birds.

Rescued chicks rest under the red light of an incubator early in their rehabilitation.

"These chicks arrived in a very bad condition since a lot of them were dehydrated, they were tiny -- some of them were just coming out of their eggs -- so we had a little bit of a problem with infections.
"By now they're all stabilized, they get medical treatment, they get regular feeds" of egg yolks, baby formula, prawns and fish. In between feeds, Ludyina says, they're also fed electrolyte fluids to aid their rehydration.

Cindy McCain saw woman with toddler of diff ethnicity. Called cops

Cindy McCain claims that she saw human trafficking at a Phoenix airport. Police found no evidence of any misconduct.

The widow of the late Senator John McCain, who co-chairs the Arizona Governor's Council on Human Trafficking, said on Monday that she witnessed what she believed was human trafficking at the Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport last week.

“I came in from a trip I’d been on and I spotted — it looked odd — it was a woman of a different ethnicity than the child, this little toddler she had, and something didn’t click with me,” she said on KTAR News.

“I tell people 'Trust your gut.' I went over to the police and told them what I saw and they went over and questioned her and, by God, she was trafficking that kid.”

But Phoenix police disputed McCain’s claims and said that officers “determined there was no evidence of criminal conduct or endangerment,” according to NBC 12.

Toronto Serial killer's victims were vulnerable gay immigrants (south asian/middle eastern)/homeless

Toronto police went to arrest a man they suspected of murder. They found a man tied to his bed.

When Toronto police moved to arrest a man they suspected of being a serial killer last year, they found a man tied to his bed. Alive.

Police then searched the suspect's hard drive for evidence. There, they discovered eight folders labeled with the names of different men. Each folder contained photos of the men -- some alive and some dead and some with their naked bodies posed in fur coats or with unlit cigars.

There was a ninth folder, too. It was labeled with the name of the man tied to the bed.

Those macabre details were made public by Crown attorney Michael Cantlon this week as part of the criminal sentencing of Bruce McArthur, who lured the men to his home, strangled them and then dismembered them, according to CNN network partner CTV News.

McArthur, 67, pleaded guilty on January 29 to eight counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Andrew Kinsman, Selim Esen, Majeed Kayhan, Soroush Mahmudi, Dean Lisowick, Skandaraj Navaratnam, Abdulbasir Faizi and Kirushna Kumar Kanagaratnam.

----

Most of the victims were immigrants of South Asian or Middle Eastern descent, Cantlon told the court. Some were from Toronto's Gay Village neighborhood and had ties to the city's LGBTQ community.

"Most of the deceased had traits that made victimization more likely or harder to detect. Some were forced to live parts of their life in secret because of their orientation. Some lacked stable housing," Cantlon said, according to CTV.

"There is evidence that Mr. McArthur sought out and exploited these vulnerabilities to continue his crimes undetected."

Justice Department sues Philadelphia over supervised injection facility that aims to prevent fatal d

The federal government has filed a lawsuit to block the city of Philadelphia from opening a site where people can go to illegally use drugs while under supervision, an effort aimed at preventing overdoses amid the nationwide opioid epidemic. The lawsuit sets up a court battle over whether such facilities violate federal law or save lives.

The Justice Department sued Safehouse, a nonprofit organization that planned to open what is known as a supervised injection facility in Philadelphia. Such facilities allow illicit drug abuse but monitor users closely, getting them immediate help in the event of an overdose or adverse reaction. The idea has gained some traction elsewhere — including San Francisco, Seattle and New York — but has not yet resulted in official facilities for illicit drug use.

Philadelphia leaders have warmed to the idea, and the city is closest to opening one. The city’s district attorney has said he would not prosecute those who operate such a facility or those who use drugs there.

Advocates say that such drug sanctuaries could be an important tool in the fight to stem the opioid epidemic. Philadelphia, which has one of the nation’s most active heroin markets, has seen a high toll from opioid abuse. Supervised injection facilities exist in other countries, and advocates contend they save lives by allowing drug users to use in sanitary conditions where they are monitored for signs of overdose rather than overdosing on the street, where help might not be available. Advocates also believe safe injection sites curb the spread of HIV and hepatitis C by limiting needle sharing.
