U of New Hampshire professor posed as immigrant woman of color to post racist, sexist comments

UNH Professor Resigns After Investigation into Fake Twitter Account Using Racist, Sexist Language

A University of New Hampshire chemistry professor resigned after he – a white male – was accused of posing as a female immigrant of color on Twitter to make racist and sexist remarks.

An investigation into the faculty member began in October and the university confirmed his resignation on Wednesday.

"It has been four months since we were first made aware of serious allegations of misconduct by a member of our faculty on social media. We appreciate your patience while the university conducted a thorough and fair investigation. That investigation is now complete," a letter signed by UNH President James W. Dean Jr. and Associate Vice President for Community, Equity and Diversity Nadine Petty said.

----------

"Every time people would criticize the account and say that we do know racism exists in STEM and we do know sexism is a problem, it would say I am a woman of color so there, it's not an issue," they said.

The professor, a white male, is alleged to have created an account where he posed as an immigrant woman of color. The account, which attracted more than 13,000 followers using the handle “piney_the,” spread misogynist, anti-trans and anti-Black Lives Matter messages, as well as re-shared nude photos of a former politician leaked without permission.

----

Miller added the professor “is embarrassed and overwhelmed and shell shocked. He fears that this could be the end of his academic career.”

Students within the chemistry department held a protest calling for his immediate firing last fall. The professor had been on leave since October.

MA: under 75 can be vaccinated if they accompany over 75. sets off rush for older companions

Will Massachusetts’s Vaccine Buddy System Work? Well, It’s Worth a Shot
This week, the state began allowing caregivers to be vaccinated if they accompany residents over the age of 75. This has sent many state residents on a hunt for older companions.

BOSTON — Gloria Clark of Malden, Mass., woke up on Thursday with one goal and one goal only: to find herself an unvaccinated person over the age of 75.

She started with an ad on Craigslist, but responses were sluggish, so she started knocking on doors. The 89-year-old two doors down was not interested. An 80-year-old neighbor was not home, and typically napped in the afternoon, but Ms. Clark was undaunted.

“I’ll catch her tomorrow morning,” said Ms. Clark, 72, a retired high school math teacher. “I’ll find someone. I know I will.”

This week, Massachusetts began a first-in-the-nation experiment, offering vaccinations to those who accompany people who are 75 and older to mass vaccination sites.

----------

“I have a great driving record and a very clean Toyota Camry,” said one person in an advertisement on Craigslist. “I can pay $100 cash as well. I am a friendly conversationalist and will allow you to choose the music and show me all the pictures of your grandkids!”

A Boston-area graduate student offered “$200+ for the privilege of transporting a Massachusetts resident to his or her first or second vaccine appointment.” Another advertisement mentioned that the journey to the vaccination would be taken in a Lexus.

She never won a Nobel prize. But today this pioneering physicist is getting her face on a stamp

Wu got her Ph.D., became a professor and made landmark discoveries in physics at a time when relatively few women in the United States were even going to college.

The Chinese immigrant's work garnered her nicknames like "the queen of physics," and she won numerous accolades. But Wu never won a Nobel prize. And some speculate her gender may have been one reason she was passed over.

garbage truck employees spot sex offenders car with 10 year old girl, block his car

Dion Merrick, left, described how he and his colleague parked their garbage truck, right, at the end of a path in order to stop a suspect's vehicle from getting away

Merrick and Antoine took swift action, using their garbage truck to block the Nissan's exit and stop it from escaping, and calling the police.

When police arrived, they arrested registered sex offender Michael Sereal, 33, and rescued ten-year-old Lasalle from his car. Sereal is now in jail accused of aggravated kidnapping.

Cellphone video, taken by Merrick, shows Sereal being arrested by police and walked to their car as the sanitation worker addresses the camera.

'Thank god they got him now,' said Merrick, who says he is the father of a little girl. 'I just saved that little girl's life. They got him, thanks to two Pelican drivers.'

'That girl is ten years old. The car right there the girl is safe right now, thank god, because I have a little girl.'

Thieves Nationwide Are Slithering Under Cars, Swiping Catalytic Converters

Thieves Nationwide Are Slithering Under Cars, Swiping Catalytic Converters
The pollution-control gadgets are full of precious metals like palladium, and prices are soaring as regulators try to tame emissions. Crooks with hacksaws have noticed.

Michael Kevane, an economics professor in San Jose, Calif., didn’t give a second thought to parking his 2005 Prius in his driveway one rainy evening last month. But the next morning, when his son Elliot went to start up the car, “it sounded like a jackhammer,” Mr. Kevane said. “The whole block could hear the noise.”

The reason for the ruckus: A thief in the night had made off with the car’s catalytic converter, a critical emissions-control device that contains precious metals more valuable than gold.

Two days later, Mr. Kevane’s sister, Jean, who lives in Los Angeles, had the catalytic converter stolen from her 2003 Honda Accord LX. “I thought, ‘This can’t be a coincidence,’” Mr. Kevane said.

It wasn’t.

Stricter car emissions rules around the world — particularly in China, which has scrambled in recent years to get its dire air pollution problem under control — have sent demand for the precious metals in catalytic converters surging. That has pushed up the asking price for some of the precious metals used in the device — like palladium and rhodium — to record highs.

From about $500 an ounce five years ago, the price of palladium quintupled to hit a record of $2,875 an ounce last year, and is now hovering between $2,000 and $2,500 an ounce, above the price of gold. Rhodium prices have skyrocketed more than 3,000 percent from about $640 an ounce five years ago to a record $21,900 an ounce this year, roughly 12 times the price of gold.

-------

The metals prices, in turn, are fueling a black market in stolen catalytic converters, which can be sawed off from the belly of a car in minutes, and fetch several hundred dollars at a scrapyard, which then sells it to recyclers who extract the metals. These global trends in emissions regulations, metals markets and larceny appear to have converged that rainy night in Mr. Kevane’s driveway.

LAPD officer charged with stealing pickup from Orange car lot, driving it to work for more than a ye

LAPD officer charged with stealing pickup from Orange car lot, driving it to work for more than a year

A Los Angeles police officer has been charged with stealing a truck from a dealership in Orange and driving the stolen pickup more than a year after changing its status to recovered, prosecutors said Monday.

Matthew Calleros, a 45-year-old Whittier resident, pleaded not guilty Monday to the three felonies and three misdemeanors he’s facing. They include unlawful taking of a vehicle, forging a license plate, false personation and unauthorized disclosure of information from state DMV records, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office said in a news release.

Gino Gonzalez, a sales manager at the used car lot, told KTLA last November that he remembered Calleros coming in and walking straight to the Silverado, seeming very interested.

Gonzalez says he showed Calleros around the truck, opening the hood and starting the engine. He walked to his office after being asked for the Carfax report, and heard the hood shut before he got to his office door.

“I turned around and he was already climbing into the truck, and he proceeded to drive off,” Gonzalez said.

Surveillance video from the dealership shows Gonzalez running after the truck as it was driven away.

After stealing the truck, Calleros used another L.A. police officer’s ID to call his department’s Vehicle Warrant Unit to report the pickup had been recovered, prosecutors said.

Parents sue Robinhood after 20 yr old commits suicide believing he owed $730K

University of Nebraska student Alexander Kearns, who had begun dabbling in trading, ran into problems on June 11 when the app put a hold on his account showing that he was $730,000 in the red and that he needed to pay over $170,000 in the coming days, CBS News reported.

“He thought he blew up his life,” Alex’s dad Dan Kearns said in an interview with the network. “He thought he screwed up beyond repair.”

Kearns had been trading options, rather than stocks, so the negative balance was probably a temporary amount that showed until the options settled to his account.

There was no customer service number for Kearns to call and while he did email Robinhood three times, he only received a automatic response that the app would get back to him when they could, noting a possible delay in replies, the report said.

The next day on June 12, Kearns killed himself by stepping in front of an oncoming train.

He left behind a suicide note that said, “How was a 20-year-old with no income able to get assigned almost a million dollars worth of leverage?”
