Texas Woman Feeding Hot Cheetos to Spider Monkey Inside El Paso Zoo Enclosure Fired From Job at Law

EL PASO, Texas (WSVN) — A viral video showing a woman who climbed into a monkey exhibit at a Texas zoo has led to the alleged woman getting fired from her job.

Video of the incident posted to Instagram shows the woman under a waterfall feeding two spider monkeys at the El Paso Zoo.

“These are primates we’re talking about, they could do some substantial damage to you,” Mason Kleist, a zookeeper at the facility told KVIA. “They may be small monkeys, but they can take you to the ground if they wanted to.”

She risked spreading COVID-19 to the monkeys, Libby and Sunday, a zookeeper said, not to mention personal injury.
The Texas woman seen in a video feeding hot Cheetos to spider monkeys while inside the monkey exhibit at the El Paso Zoo has been fired from her job. The law firm she had previously been employed by called her illegal entry into the enclosure “irresponsible and reckless,” and sent their thoughts out to the spider monkeys, Libby and Sunday, for the “traumatic experience.”

“The firm has always been a strong supporter of animals and animal advocacy,” Lovett Law Firm, which specializes in personal injury, said in a statement on social media. “We absolutely do not condone this irresponsible and reckless behavior.

“We support the El Paso Zoo and our thoughts go out to the spider monkeys, Libby and Sunday, and hope that they will recover from this very traumatic experience,” the statement continued.

The Office Actor Mark York Dead at 55

&t=49s

Mark York, the actor who played Billy Merchant on The Office, died last week at age 55. TMZ reports that York, a paraplegic since 1988, died "quickly" at an Ohio hospital after falling ill, but that his cause of death is not clear. His obituary says the ailment was "brief and unexpected." York, who grew up in Ohio but came to California to pursue a career in the entertainment industry, also had roles on TV shows including CSI: New York, 8 Simple Rules, and Fighting Words. York's recurring Office character was the property manager of the office park containing Dunder Mifflin, Deadline reports.

York's website says that the "almost fatal, life-changing auto accident" that left him paralyzed also gave him "a new lease on life," and that, in his acting career, he tried "to open the minds of casting directors, and others in Hollywood, to also see a wheelchair-user in real-life roles such as doctors, lawyers, businessmen, and such, because...well, they are." More recently, he had worked as an inventor, getting two patents for his inventions.

Trump support unleashes barrage of F bombs at Michael Cohen

A Trump-supporting jogger unleashed a fusillade of expletives at Michael Cohen in Central Park on Monday, prompting the ex-presidential attorney to pull out his phone, run after the heckler and catch her on video.

Cohen, who’s a key witness in multiple criminal investigations into former President Donald Trump, told the Daily News he was strolling through the park listening to music when the jogger flipped him off and dropped a “barrage of F bombs” at him.

“(She) runs at me screaming profanities and sticking her middle fingers in my face. I removed my cell phone from my pocket, caught up to her and recorded her,” Cohen said.

The video, which Cohen posted on Twitter, shows the unidentified woman raising both middle fingers at him as he chases after her saying, “Let’s make you famous, let’s make you famous.”

Small Businesses Have Surged in Black Communities. Was It the Stimulus?

Small Businesses Have Surged in Black Communities. Was It the Stimulus?
New research finds a big rise in new businesses despite the pandemic, particularly in predominantly Black neighborhoods.

Over the last year, multiple stimulus measures from the federal government have helped families buy groceries, pay rent and build a financial cushion. This aid might have also helped start a new era of entrepreneurship.

There has been a surge in start-ups in America that experts have yet to fully explain. But a new study — using data that allows researchers to more precisely track new businesses across time and place — finds that the surge coincides with federal stimulus, and is strongest in Black communities.

----------

The rise in registrations began shortly before the second and third bills were passed, but new entrepreneurs might have started anticipating the result after the first stimulus. “People had already been through this once and had a better understanding of how this would work,” said Catherine Fazio, director of M.B.A. programs at Boston University.

Although there might be other factors at work, the researchers say the stimulus checks and increased unemployment benefits shored up confidence in the economy enough that millions felt comfortable in starting a business despite being uncertain about when the pandemic would end.

Last summer, Pilar Donnelly started making playhouses in Houston for her two 6-year-old boys. She had been laid off from her job in sports marketing and wanted to give them something for their birthday. With no background in woodworking, she started off with a design she liked online and watched YouTube to learn woodworking techniques. After making a number of playhouses for her friends and family, she realized it could be a business. That business, which she registered in June, is called Wish You Wood Custom Creations.

She said it was her personal savings and the unemployment benefits that really helped give her peace of mind last summer; the stimulus check wasn’t enough by itself to make a huge difference in her decision to start a business.

Why "Social Justice" Triggers Conservatives

Why “Social Justice” Triggers Conservatives
They loathe any words that imply an obligation to their fellow human beings.

“Social justice” might seem, at first, like a perfectly innocuous phrase, safe enough for brands like Aflac, Mountain Dew, Disney, and Pizza Hut to use in their public statements about racism and diversity. After George Floyd’s death, the pizza chain announced that it would “stand against oppression” and donate $3 million to “social justice efforts.” But even before Mitch McConnell soberly advised corporate America to “stay out of politics,” the right was crusading against the very notion of social justice.

In December, the Idaho Freedom Foundation, a conservative think tank, released a report accusing colleges of indoctrinating students in “social justice ideology” and training them to “identify, shame, and destroy oppressors,” who are, the report underscored, typically Christian, white, and male. The Idaho GOP was listening. The Republican state legislature slashed $409,000 from the budget of Boise State University and banned it from using state funds to support “social justice ideology student activities, clubs, events, and organizations.”

What these groups actually are remains unclear, but the think tank collected a list of sinister examples, including the campus writing center, the social work department, and even the dorms: The university had had the gall to start calling them “inclusive, safe, and caring communities” in 2011. That’s the year the phrase “social justice warrior” first appeared on Twitter, offering reactionaries a new name for the “P.C.” killjoys and feminazi bogeywomen of decades past.

Long Slide Looms for World Population, With Sweeping Ramifications

Long Slide Looms for World Population, With Sweeping Ramifications
Fewer babies’ cries. More abandoned homes. Toward the middle of this century, as deaths start to exceed births, changes will come that are hard to fathom.

All over the world, countries are confronting population stagnation and a fertility bust, a dizzying reversal unmatched in recorded history that will make first-birthday parties a rarer sight than funerals, and empty homes a common eyesore.

Maternity wards are already shutting down in Italy. Ghost cities are appearing in northeastern China. Universities in South Korea can’t find enough students, and in Germany, hundreds of thousands of properties have been razed, with the land turned into parks.

Like an avalanche, the demographic forces — pushing toward more deaths than births — seem to be expanding and accelerating. Though some countries continue to see their populations grow, especially in Africa, fertility rates are falling nearly everywhere else. Demographers now predict that by the latter half of the century or possibly earlier, the global population will enter a sustained decline for the first time.

A planet with fewer people could ease pressure on resources, slow the destructive impact of climate change and reduce household burdens for women. But the census announcements this month from China and the United States, which showed the slowest rates of population growth in decades for both countries, also point to hard-to-fathom adjustments.

The strain of longer lives and low fertility, leading to fewer workers and more retirees, threatens to upend how societies are organized — around the notion that a surplus of young people will drive economies and help pay for the old. It may also require a reconceptualization of family and nation. Imagine entire regions where everyone is 70 or older. Imagine governments laying out huge bonuses for immigrants and mothers with lots of children. Imagine a gig economy filled with grandparents and Super Bowl ads promoting procreation.

A social media post telling people to show up to a party in Huntington Beach led to the unlawful assembly of more than 2,500 people, police said.

Police in the Southern California city said they knew about the post and made preparations, but the crowd became "unruly" Saturday night -- prompting the declaration of an unlawful assembly.

"The initial crowd at the beach grew in size and moved to the downtown area where it was estimated to be over 2,500," the Huntington Beach Police Department said in a statement.

"As the crowd size continued to grow rapidly, large groups disbursed into various locations throughout the area, throwing bottles, rocks, fireworks, and other items at officers. At that time, the HBPD requested assistance from outside agencies. Throughout the course of the evening, over 150 officers from virtually all agencies within Orange County were deployed to Huntington Beach based on the pre-arranged request for assistance."

Multiple downtown businesses, police vehicles and a lifeguard tower were damaged due to vandalism, authorities said.

An emergency curfew was issued from 11:30 p.m .Saturday until 5:30 a.m. Sunday for parts of Huntington Beach, police said.

By the time the chaos ended, 121 adults and 28 juveniles were arrested and booked for charges such as vandalism, the firing of dangerous/illegal fireworks, failure to disperse and curfew violations, police said.
