Famed Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan dead at age 37 (detox released him w/o telling family)

really sad!!!

Colt Brennan, a star quarterback at the University of Hawaii who finished third in the 2007 Heisman Trophy balloting, died early Tuesday, his father said. He was 37.

Brennan, who had public struggles with alcohol, died at a hospital in California, his father, Terry Brennan, told The Associated Press.

“He just spent one too many times on the dark side of life, and it caught up with him,” Terry Brennan said of his son.

Brennan transferred to Hawaii after stints at Colorado and Saddleback College in California. A certain pro prospect after a record-breaking junior season, he bypassed the NFL draft in order to play his senior year for Hawaii coach June Jones.

Brennan led the Warriors to its finest season ever, going 12-0 in the regular season.

2 California Cops Shot While Serving Search Warrant, 1 Dead Officers shot and killed the gunman

https://www.newser.com/story/306006/2-california-cops-shot-while-serving-search-warrant-1-dead.html

A California police officer was killed and another wounded Monday while serving a search warrant before officers shot and killed the gunman, authorities said. Shots were fired shortly before 5:30pm as officers served the warrant at an apartment in the Central Coast city of San Luis Obispo, the AP reports.

“This is a tragedy beyond measure for all of those who serve and care about our community,” City Manager Derek Johnson said in a statement. “Our deepest condolences go out to the family. We are devastated by this loss.” The wounded officer was hospitalized in stable condition, the city reported. Other details, including the names of the officers and the gunman, weren't immediately released.

Victoria Torres, 21, told the San Luis Obispo Tribune that she was upstairs in her bedroom when she heard “a very loud knocking" at an apartment across from her. She looked out her window and saw a police car, then walked downstairs and looked out another window. She saw a man carrying a “big gun" who began shooting from the door of an apartment at officers who were hiding behind their patrol car, Torres said. Torres went back upstairs to hide and call 911. Monica Rochte, 31, told the Tribune that she heard the police banging on an apartment door and saying: “We’re going to come in. We know you’re in there.” Rochte said there was yelling and then a bang that she thought might be police knocking down the door, followed by a single shot. Rochte then heard police yell: “He has a gun!” followed by a series of 15 to 20 shots, she said.

Author Thinks He's Found the Voice of Alexa, Book identifies her as Nina Rolle of Colorado

Alexa's real name is Nina. At least, that's the assertion put forth in a new book about Amazon by Brad Stone, reports the Guardian.

Stone says the person who voices the company's virtual assistant is Colorado voice-over artist Nina Rolle. Neither Rolle nor Amazon is confirming or denying, however.

You can judge for yourself at Rolle's website, which provides samples of her commercial work.

This ad for a Colorado neighborhood provides another example, and it's enough to convince James Vincent of the Verge. "You can absolutely hear Alexa's reassuring tones in Rolle's voice," he writes. "Or, to be more precise, you can absolutely hear where Alexa's reassuring tones come from when listening to Rolle."

What happened to Van Morrison? The fall from eccentric genius to conspiracy theorist

https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/music/story/2021-05-10/van-morrison-latest-record-project-antisemitism-coronavirus

Outside of the circles of his most dedicated fans, the arrival of a Van Morrison album in the 21st century has not been a news event. That trend stopped last week, however, when Morrison, 75, released “Latest Record Project, Vol. 1,” a 28-track double album that includes eyebrow-raising song titles such as “Where Have All the Rebels Gone,” “Why Are You on Facebook?” and “Stop Bitching, Do Something.” This album is now very much news: Variety published a list of “The 10 Craziest Lyrics” from the record, while the Jerusalem Post rounded up all of the claims of anti-Semitism implied in his song called “They Own the Media” and other lyrics scattered throughout.

This turn toward the alt-right didn’t come out of nowhere. Broadly speaking, Morrison’s career arc looks something like this: He went from being a brash teenage wunderkind with his band Them, to a promising young solo artist (“Brown Eyed Girl”), to a moody, soulful poet casually creating masterpieces (“Astral Weeks” and “Moondance”), to a middle-aged curmudgeon showcasing occasional moments of brilliance (“Common One”), until he slowly devolved into a boozy-uncle type, cranking out boilerplate blues LPs while leaning on his earlier legacy to fill concert halls.

--------------------------------

More recently, the global coronavirus pandemic and the ensuing prohibition of live concerts appear to have shocked and infuriated the singer. In August 2020, Morrison published a screed on his official website explaining that he needed to get his “band up and running and out of the doldrums. … We need to be playing to full capacity audiences going forward.” In a subsequently deleted message, he went further, denouncing the validity of the science behind social distancing and quarantine. “I call on my fellow singers, musicians, writers, producers, promoters and others in the industry to fight with me on this. Come forward, stand up, fight the pseudo-science and speak up.”

Back in the fall of 2020, Morrison announced three topical singles protesting COVID-19 restrictions plus a petition to end the temporary ban on live concerts. In one of these songs, “No More Lockdown,” he crooned about scientists “making up crooked facts,” labeling the perpetrators of these measures “fascist bullies.” In an unprecedented turn of events, the songs became cause for Northern Ireland’s health minister, Robin Swann, to pen an op-ed for Rolling Stone, calling Morrison’s new lyrics “dangerous” and a great comfort to “the tinfoil hat brigade who crusade against masks and vaccines and think this is all a huge global plot to remove freedoms.”

USC's Song Girls project a glamorous ideal; 10 women describe a different, toxic reality

When Bullen arrived at USC in 2017, the allure of extending her dancing dreams, of performing in stadiums to roaring fans, of wearing the pleated skirt, the red shoes and the white sweater — with all its stature and symbolism — naturally drew her to the Trojans’ prestigious spirit squad, the Song Girls.
===========

But her experience with the Song Girls would turn out to be among the darkest and most distressing of her life. Within a year, she would seek intensive outpatient treatment for an eating disorder. Soon after, she stopped dancing altogether.

----------------------------------

All 10 of the women who spoke to The Times said Song Girls faced serious body image issues within the program that went beyond normal fitness required to be on a spirit squad. Three, including Bullen, said their experiences led to some form of eating disorder. Another recalled feeling so depressed she considered suicide.

----------

No coach was more deeply entrenched on USC’s campus than Nelson, a former Song Girl herself who took over for the team’s founder, Lindley Bothwell, more than three decades ago. Nelson and Bothwell, who died in 1986, were the only two coaches to lead the iconic program until 2020, their influence solidifying during half a century at the helm.

--------------

Each of the 10 women who spoke to The Times said Nelson policed their appearance and scrutinized their public personas in ways that went well beyond traditional dance squad rules. That oversight was written directly into the Song Girls contract obtained by The Times. It stipulates squad members must stay within five pounds of their audition weight, and any changes to their appearance must first be approved by Nelson herself.

===========

When Nelson asked Bullen to consider hair extensions, she agreed, convincing her parents to purchase them as a Christmas present. Some newcomers were asked to cut their hair. Others were asked to color it — sometimes multiple times. One newcomer from a different team, according to two fellow Song Girls, was asked to dye her hair blond so many times it started to fall out.

Other beauty practices were established early on. A former Song Girl told The Times both team leaders and Nelson instructed them to buy a specific Victoria’s Secret padded push-up bra, which advertised that it added two cup sizes.

The local officials argue it is a waste of time and will not change anything

drunk off duty cop pounds on house displaying BLM flag, challenging for fight. cop drives him home

Off-duty officer 'terrorized' family displaying Black Lives Matter flag, and police drove him home without arrest

https://www.sfgate.com/news/article/An-off-duty-cop-terrorized-a-family-displaying-16164698.php

Just after midnight on Halloween, a blaring car alarm and a loud banging sound startled Mirella Castaneda and woke her young son.

A man stood in her driveway in Forest Grove, Ore., slamming his fist into the Black Lives Matter flag draped over the metal garage door as the security alarm on the family's pickup truck continued to beep.

Castaneda immediately called 911 - but when police showed up they recognized the man as an off-duty officer named Steven Teets.

Instead of arresting Teets, though, one of the responding officers simply drove him home.

Now, Teets and that officer, Bradley Schuetz, face criminal charges in the incident that Castaneda's lawyers say "terrorized" her family.

--------------

Steve Myers, who is representing Schuetz, told The Washington Post that his client had limited options after confronting Teets because the local center where police take intoxicated individuals had been closed and the county jail was not holding people charged with misdemeanors, because of the pandemic.

Myers said Schuetz said taking Teets to his nearby home was the best way to handle the unusual situation.

https://pamplinmedia.com/pt/9-news/507921-406356-forest-grove-police-officer-charged-over-steven-teets-incident

Another Forest Grove police officer has been arrested in connection with an incident last October in which a family reported being terrorized in the middle of the night by an off-duty cop.

Bradley Schuetz allegedly picked up Steven Teets, the off-duty cop, and gave him a ride home after Forest Grove homeowner Mirella Castaneda told a 9-1-1 dispatcher that Teets — a stranger to her — was on her front porch, pounding on her door and challenging the residents to come out and fight.

Beaverton police were asked to investigate the Forest Grove Police Department's response. The Beaverton Police Department announced Friday afternoon, May 7, that its investigation led to Schuetz being arrested and charged with first-degree official misconduct, a Class A misdemeanor crime.

A grand jury formally indicted Schuetz on Thursday, May 6, according to Beaverton police.

Teets is charged with criminal mischief and disorderly conduct, for which he is awaiting trial.

Castaneda has also filed a lawsuit against him. She believes Teets' behavior was triggered by him seeing a "Black Lives Matter" flag above her garage.

------------------

Investigators ultimately revealed that Teets appeared to be “highly intoxicated” when Schuetz and Daniels arrived on the scene, according to a memo reported by the Portland Tribune last month.

Teets allegedly “squared up” with the two officers, fists raised as if he wanted to fight them. He did not recognize his colleagues, the memo said.

The responding officers did not check Teets for weapons, according to Castaneda’s tort claim. Then, Schuetz drove Teets to his nearby home, “only blocks away from the Castaneda family,” according to the claim, and helped the intoxicated officer to his front door.

--------

Her lawyer, Michael Fuller, also alleged that police did not document the possible political motives at play when Teets targeted Castaneda’s home. The responding officers did not turn on body cameras during the investigation as required by department policy, nor did they note the existence of the Black Lives Matter flags prominently displayed on Castaneda’s property in their reports. (Myers said Schuetz simply forgot to turn his body camera on while determining how to handle the incident and noted that the Forest Grove Police Department had recently implemented the body-worn cameras in January 2020. He also said the victim’s Black Lives Matter flag had not been damaged.)
