Robert Reich: Trump lies more and more every day (40 per week now)

https://www.sfchronicle.com/opinion/reich/article/Robert-Reich-Trump-lies-more-and-more-every-day-13090304.php

As the political season heats up, Donald Trump is ramping up his lies through three amplifiers: his rallies, Fox News and his Twitter account.
The three function as a big propaganda machine
.

According to the Fact Checker’s database, the average daily rate of Trump’s false or misleading claims is climbing.

The problem isn’t just the number or flagrancy of the lies — for example, that Vladimir Putin and the Russians didn’t intervene in the 2016 election on his behalf, or that the Robert Mueller investigation is part of a Democratic plot to remove him.

And it’s not just that the lies are about big, important public issues — as when he says immigrants commit more crimes than native-born Americans, or that trade wars are harmless.

The biggest problem is that his lies aren’t subject to the filters traditionally applied to presidential statements — a skeptical press, experts who debunk falsehoods, and respected politicians who publicly disagree.

Trump's Political Lies Blanket TV, Twitter - And They Are Being Tracked

Lies can be fun -- especially in fictional TV dramas and comedies, and maybe even with some reality shows. Political lies? It's not a game show. On TV and other media, falsehoods have real-life consequences.

At the beginning of his administration, President Trump’s false claims from his words/statements/tweets, on TV and other media platforms, had been running around eight lies a week.

Now -- through late June -- it is up to 40 lies a week, according to research from The Toronto Star.

Most of his lies comes in speeches, 648. Why? His speeches aren’t always fact-checked. Or they spill from off-the-cuff, improvisational stuff, according to analysis. Lies in interviews are now at 380; informal remarks at events, 369; Twitter, 339; and press conferences and so-called “scrums” -- informal gathering of the press -- 192.

the economic fallout of the president's tariffs could peak around election time

Trump's new midterm threat: A trade war smacking voters
Market analysts, industry experts and economists warn the economic fallout of the president’s tariffs could peak around election time.

President Donald Trump’s trade wars could become a major political drag for Republicans, with job losses and price increases piling up just as voters head to the polls in November.

Trump jolted markets once again early Friday when he said he’s prepared to impose penalties on some $500 billion in Chinese goods regardless of the consequences that might ensue, economic or political. “Look, I’m not doing this for politics,” the president said on CNBC. “I’m doing this to do the right thing for our country.”

But market analysts, industry experts and economists warn that the economic fallout of the president’s tariffs — those that are already in effect and those he’s threatening to impose — is only going to intensify over the coming months and could reach a peak around election time.

“We’re already hearing complaints now from companies, so by the time we get to the midterms, you’re going to be hearing governors, mayors, Congress complaining about jobs, about cost increases, about problems,” Carlos Gutierrez, the former Commerce secretary under President George W. Bush, told POLITICO. “The question is: Will that be strong enough to offset the idea that we have to get tough on our trading partners, and that our jobs are being stolen overseas?”

banks refuse cash deposits from non account holders

http://www.latimes.com/business/lazarus/la-fi-lazarus-wells-fargo-cash-deposits-20180716-story.html

Edward Manley, 91, asked his son to deposit $38.50 in coins into his Wells Fargo account. Wells refused to accept them.

Manley and his son are now suspected money launderers.

Welcome to banking in the 21st century, with a growing number of financial institutions saying they won’t accept cash deposits from anyone but account holders. Wells Fargo is the latest to announce such a policy.

Bank of America has been limiting cash deposits since the beginning of the year. Chase has been doing it since 2014.

-----

But Manley’s experience shows that even well-intended policies can look foolish in the sunlight of real life.

The Temple City resident doesn’t get around as well as he used to. Manley has knee problems and is hard of hearing. His 77-year-old wife is more mobile but isn’t always free to run errands.

So the couple recently asked their 34-year-old son to help out with a bank deposit at the local Wells Fargo branch. They had a stock-dividend check for $85.71 and several rolls of coins. Like many seniors, the Manleys for years have made a practice of depositing spare change in the bank once it accumulates to deposit-worthy levels.

In this case, once again, we’re talking $38.50, nicely rolled.

Dept of Homeland Security wants immigrants to pass a "public charge" determination

Trump administration wants immigrants to take a test only one-third of Americans would pass
Department of Homeland Security wants immigrants to pass a test before being admitted into the country.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is considering a plan that would drastically and unilaterally restrict legal immigration to only the wealthiest and most privileged applicants.

An archaic federal immigration provision called the “public charge” test is currently being drafted by the Trump administration. Immigrants coming to the United States would generally fail this new rewritten test if they had a medical condition and no source of subsidized health insurance.

The test also places a premium on an applicant’s income and assets. Applicants must make at least 250 percent of the federal poverty guidelines, which, in 2018, means $30,350 for a one-person household and $62,750 for a four-person household. By comparison, the average American working full-time typically makes around $51,640 for men and $41,554 for women.

According to a new report from the Center For American Progress, if every American citizen were forced to take the Trump administration’s test, more than 100 million people — roughly one-third of the U.S. population — would fail. The report also estimates that at least half of all people in the country could fail the test over a period of several years, when factoring in possible economic downturns, job insecurity, health problems, or other factors.
