Fearing deportation, Iraqi refugees cut tethers (GPS Ankle monitors)

Detroit — A growing number of Iraqi refugees are attempting to "save their own lives" by cutting off their tethers to evade immigration authorities' deportation attempts before their court cases are heard, families and lawyers say.

At least seven Iraqi nationals have removed their tethers in Michigan in the last month, according to a lawyer representing 23 refugees.

One of them, Ali Al-Sadoon, ditched his tether in July in Detroit on the day he was supposed to be deported. The 33-year-old refugee from Redford Township now faces criminal charges for removing the ankle GPS tracker in addition to removal orders for breaking and entering, for which he was sentenced in 2013.

“The only reason Ali cut his tether was because he was scared ... they sentenced him to death.”

But his case is expected to head to a trial he might not have otherwise received.

"The only reason Ali cut his tether was because he was scared ..." said his wife, Belqis Florido. "They sentenced him to death."

Last week, Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials also arrested Wisam Hamana, 39, of Hazel Park and Baha Al-Said, 35, of Ann Arbor after both cut their tethers. Another Iraqi national, Oliver Awshana, 31, was deported from Calhoun County Correctional facility and made such a scene while transferring flights in Chicago that the pilot refused to fly him, his lawyers s

‘We were betrayed!’ Iraqi Christian who backed Trump in 2016 furious after president deports her uncle

Many Christian Iraqi immigrants backed President Donald Trump in 2016 because he regularly decried the killings of Christians in the Middle East.

Three years later, however, some of them are feeling betrayed as the president deports members of their community back to the country that he once accused of failing to protect its Christian population.

The Los Angeles Times reports that America’s largest community of Iraqi immigrants in Michigan is feeling a wave of anxiety after the recent deportation of 41-year-old Jimmy Aldaoud, who grew up in a refugee camp in Greece and had never been to Iraq until he was sent there earlier this year.

Aldaoud, a diabetic man who also struggled with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, died shortly after arriving in the country.

Eva Shamou, an Iraqi Christian who backed Trump in 2016 and whose uncle was recently sent back to Iraq despite living in the U.S. since the 1980s, tells the Los Angeles Times that many members of her community have become disillusioned with the president.

“Our church was pushing us to vote for Trump, but he sold us empty promises,” she explains. “We feel like we were betrayed… I honestly thought Trump would protect this community.

Shamou also says that she fears for her uncle’s safety.

“He’s living in a dangerous place, and he has no money and no place to stay,” she tells the LA Times. “He told me he’s ready to commit suicide.”

This Entomologist Has a Travel Warning: Always Put Your Suitcase in the Hotel Bathroom

https://www.apartmenttherapy.com/suitcase-hotel-bathroom-36634785

There’s just something about walking into your hotel room after a long flight, flinging your suitcase (and yourself) on the bed, and officially entering vacation mode. It just feels all sorts of right, doesn’t it? Well, apparently, there’s one thing about that equation that’s all sorts of wrong, according to experts. Namely, the whole flinging-your-suitcase-on-the-bed part.

Believe it or not, the best place to put your luggage when you’re staying in a hotel isn’t on the bed. Or on the floor. Or even shoved inside the closet on one of those luggage rack thingies. Nope; the smartest travelers know to store their suitcases in the hotel bathroom—or better yet, inside the tub.

Why You Should Put Your Suitcase in the Hotel Bathtub
The reason behind it is simpler than you might think, but it might make your skin crawl: bed bugs. These teeny tiny critters hide inside beds, couches, and clothing, and feast on the blood of humans to survive. (Sounds like something out of a horror movie, doesn’t it?) And if they’re present in the room, they’ll happily jump from the bed to your luggage and into your clothing, if given the chance.

“Travelers should avoid placing their luggage on upholstered surfaces and the bed when they arrive at their destination, since bed bugs are typically found on mattresses, box springs, and in the crevices of furniture and inside upholstery,” says Brittany Campbell, Ph.D., staff entomologist for the National Pest Management Association (NPMA).

Since they’re way less likely to infest a bathroom, Campbell says that it’s the safest place to store your luggage when you’re away from home. You can either place your luggage in the tub while you thoroughly check your room for bed bugs, or leave your stuff in the bathroom during your entire stay. (If you leave your bag in the bathtub, just remember to take it out before you turn on the shower. That could end pretty badly.)

Trump started his Sunday evening tweet hate fest

Donald J. Trump
@realDonaldTrump
So funny to watch Little Donny Deutsch on TV with his own failing show. When I did The Apprentice, Donny would call me (along with
@ErinBurnett
& others) and BEG to be on that VERY successful show. He had the TV “bug” & I would let him come on though he (& Erin) had very little..

..TV talent. Then, during the 2016 Election, I would watch as Joe Scarborough & his very angry Psycho wife(?) would push Donny to the point of total humiliation. He would never fight back because he wanted to stay on TV, even on a very low rated show, all in the name of ambition!

pro-Trump and liberals fight at the "god, guns and liberty" rally in Oregon

'They espouse hatred and inequality,' left-wing counter-protester Mariah Roth told KEZI. 'We're Americans and we have voices and we can raise our voices in loving, kind, compassionate ways and peaceful ways.'

The rally organizers marched around Wayne Morse Free Speech Plaza with banners, signs, and flags, some wearing costumes and carrying firearms. Some of the counter protesters there to oppose them wore little to nothing at all.

They are the least "familial" First Family in our lifetimes

Babies make excellent political props — so useful for a quick kiss and cuddle during campaign stops, instant humanizers of even the stiffest politicians. But the Trumps are different. We rarely see them with babies. They are the least “familial” First Family in our lifetimes, despite (or perhaps because of) having created the most family-centered, nepotistic, mob-dynasty-style administration in history. We detect no family warmth from this president (save his unsettling attachment to Ivanka). No spousal affection. But also so little acknowledgment of any of his other children, of the fact of being a father (and grandfather) at all. Where is Barron, for example? We never see him or receive even the most anodyne updates about him — his progress in school, his favorite sports team. Where are the grandkids? Nothing. And certainly, Melania is the least publicly maternal First Lady we’ve ever had. She doesn’t even pretend to care.

No, in Trumpville, the emotional texture and familial feeling usually modeled by a First Family has been replaced with the enthusiasm of anonymous crowds, with the mass hysteria whipped up at Nuremberg-style rallies led by the President, where people seek the thrill of connection conjured by ritualistic chants of racism and misogyny (“Lock her up!” “Build that wall!” “Send them back!”). Donald Trump seems to experience love only in such soulless settings, with their underlying threat of violence — and he encourages his followers to do the same.

Those fascistic ceremonies lie at the root of the El Paso massacre, and that’s what makes this photo especially galling. Motherless Baby Paul is the latest victim of the hatred those rallies gin up. For Trump then to create uncharacteristically this faux portrait of familial love, to play-act a kind of happy Daddy, Mommy, and Baby — by borrowing THIS baby — is an abomination. In this simulacrum of a family portrait, the centerpiece is a direct evocation of the massacre that rendered him available for “adoption” in this photo in the first place. And since the picture blithely replaces the baby’s slaughtered parents — murdered for their Latinx ethnicity — with two unconcerned, smiling white people, it performs a kind of symbolic kidnapping, cruelly appropriating someone else’s child for personal gain. (Note also the marginalized positions of the two Achondo relatives.

Ivanka Trump truly believes that she has accomplished everything in her life, without daddy's help

This New York magazine, uh, expose on Ivanka Trump. Uh, we had talked about it earlier, but I want to come back to it again because there’s another important part of it that people need to understand if you haven’t taken the time to actually read the article. And that is that according to Ivanka Trump’s friends up in New York, the people who spoke to New York magazine for this article, Ivanka Trump has no idea that she’s privileged. These friends claimed that Ivanka Trump truly believes that she has accomplished everything in her life, that she is accomplished without the help of her father. And even the friends admit that this is a pretty delusional way for Ivanka to go through life. Here is what one of them said quoted in the article.

“Ivanka always has to prove to herself that she’s gotten ahead on her own without her father… She really has no idea she’s privileged. She genuinely thinks she’s earned everything she has. She goes on and on all the time about how hard she works.”

Now, the friend did say, yeah, hey, she works hard. And she, she goes to the gym and she goes to dinner with friends, which was really, don’t classify as hard work for any kind of business, but a, okay, sure she goes to the gym and she eats dinner. Good for her. But the fact of the matter is that Ivanka might be as delusional as her father because Ivanka has not accomplished anything on this planet without her father’s help, whether it’s her last name, whether it’s money from her father, whether it’s her father promoting her stuff, or giving her cushy jobs that she otherwise would not qualify for everything she has, she owes to that man. And that may actually be one of the reasons why she is such a suck up to Donald Trump.

But we have seen this kind of, Oh, I earned everything, even though I never did mentality before. We saw it in George W. Bush. George W. Bush was a complete failure throughout his entire life. You know, went from being a drug addict and an alcoholic failing and bankrupting every company he ever ran. But his dad and his daddy’s buddies kept giving him more, given him more, and then eventually his dad and dad’s friends gave him the presidency. Ivanka Trump’s the same way. You know, George W. Bush continued to fail upwards and that’s basically what Ivanka Trump is doing. She doesn’t have the bankruptcy’s and failures necessarily that George W. Bush had, but she has that same, I’m a very good person and very good at job mentality as what we see from her. That’s what her friends see from her when they hang out with her. You know, they also went on to mention the fact that she’s very bitter now and that she has no problem just taking things that she believes she is owed. For example, a security clearance that she did not qualify for using her private government computer for official government work or private personal computer, excuse me, for government work. And of course, all of those trademarks that she’s won from China because of her position in the White House, they believe that something has changed with Ivanka and that she’s now a little bit more just angry and just if she thinks she’s owed something, she takes it now, that is reminiscent of another president, the president that we have today.

Good.

So it may have taken her 30 plus years to get there, but Ivanka Trump, according to her friends, is finally turning into her father.
