Father charged after 12 year old daughter kills man and dog with suv

https://www-m.cnn.com/2019/08/18/us/houston-car-death-charges-trnd/index.html?r=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cnn.com%2F

A 12-year-old girl hit a man and his dog with an SUV in Houston, killing them instantly, police said. Her father has been arrested and charged with criminal negligent homicide and endangering a child.

Tomas Mejia Tol's daughter was driving the Ford Explorer around an apartment complex Thursday evening, police said in a statement. At the time, a 2-year-old was in the backseat of the vehicle, according to CNN affiliate KTRK-TV.

"The child (driver) began to pull forward from a parking space as a man was walking with his dogs through the parking lot," police said. "When the child pressed the accelerator pedal, the Ford moved forward at a high rate of speed, struck the man, one of his dogs and then a tree."

The man and one dog were pronounced dead at the scene and the girl's father was detained.

Prosecutors said he told investigators he was the one driving, but they later found out it was the girl. Police did not release additional information on the victim, but said he was 46. Information on the suspect's attorney was not immediately available.

Missouri city apologizes after smiling selfies of police officers taken near where dead infant was found shared online

A Missouri city is apologizing after posting a selfie of smiling police officers near the crime scene where a dead baby was found hours earlier.

Columbia police posted the picture on Twitter on Thursday evening of smiling officers near where investigators sought clues in the unidentified baby’s death, officials said.

The infant, who was estimated to be less than one year old, was found near a wooded area shortly before noon Thursday, according to police. Police said they didn’t know the baby’s identity.

NRA Spent Tens of Thousands on Hair and Makeup for CEO’s Wife
The gun group used donor funds to fly Susan LaPierre’s favorite stylists around the country and put them up in style.

The NRA spent tens of thousands of dollars bringing hair and makeup artists around the country for the wife of its CEO, two sources told The Daily Beast. The expenses–which included plane flights and luxury hotel stays for the stylists–are bound to fuel an already-raging debate over what some see as a spendthrift culture in the NRA’s upper echelons. The NRA, meanwhile, called it a “non-story,” and said their ex-ad firm was responsible for any such expenses.

Susan LaPierre, the wife of longtime NRA chief Wayne LaPierre, is one of the gun organization’s many public faces, and co-chairs its Women’s Leadership Forum. She often speaks at that group’s annual gatherings for female NRA supporters. And for years now, the NRA has paid for a makeup artist and a hair stylist, both based in Nashville and plugged in to the country music scene, to do LaPierre’s hair and make-up at events around the country, according to two sources familiar with the arrangements.

The NRA Women’s Leadership Forum hosts many of its events in major metropolitan areas where local hair and makeup talent abounds. But because of LaPierre’s preference for the Nashville artists, the gun group has paid a premium to fly them around the country, and put them up in style.

That may be changing, though, as those expenditures have raised eyebrows within the NRA. According to one of the sources, the stylists were booked to provide hair and makeup services for LaPierre at its member gathering in Indianapolis this past April. But as media reports emerged with allegations of extravagant spending by the gun group, NRA officials worried the Nashville stylists’ presence could attract scrutiny. So they canceled on them at the last minute. Because the cancellation came so late, the NRA still had to pay their fees.

White House Mulled Ways to Block Migrant Children From Schools

White House Mulled Ways to Block Migrant Children From Schools

Idea was ultimately abandoned amid questions over legality

Some top aides to President Donald Trump sought for months for a way to give states the power to block undocumented immigrant children from enrolling in public schools -- all part of the administration’s efforts to stem illegal crossings at the southern U.S. border.

Trump senior adviser Stephen Miller had been a driving force behind the effort as early as 2017, pressing cabinet officials and members of the White House Domestic Policy Council repeatedly to devise a way to limit enrollment, according to several people familiar with the matter. The push was part of a menu of ideas on immigration that could be carried out without congressional approval.

Ultimately, they abandoned the idea after being told repeatedly that any such effort ran afoul of a 1982 Supreme Court case guaranteeing access to public schools. But the consideration of denying hundreds of thousands of children access to education illustrates the breadth of the White House’s push to crack down on undocumented immigrants.

------

Starting in late 2017, Miller pressed hard to find a way to limit undocumented immigrants’ access to public services, including education, according to the people.

That effort included consideration last year of a guidance memo issued by the Education Department that would tell states they had the option to refuse students with an undocumented status to attend public schools from kindergarten through high school. A memo was never issued.

Education Department spokeswoman Liz Hill said: “The memo wasn’t issued because the secretary would never consider it.”

The White House’s push was dropped because members of the administration determined the plan could violate Plyler v. Doe, a 1982 Supreme Court case that prohibited states from denying free public education based on their immigration status.

The group of dogs attended one of the Stratford Festival’s “relaxed performances.”

The shows are “specifically designed to welcome patrons who will benefit from a less restricted audience environment,” according to the festival’s website

Laura MacKenzie, owner of K-9 Country Inn Working Service Dogs, where the animals are being trained, explained to CBC Radio how the theater “gives us the opportunity to expose the dogs to different stimuli such as lights, loud noises and movement of varying degrees.”

The dogs curled up quietly at their handlers’ feet or under the seats during the performance, MacKenzie told HuffPost on Saturday.

“The photo was taken after the show, with the handlers standing nearby, but surely they would have stayed that way throughout the show if we let them,” she noted.

“The positive reaction to our outing is both shocking and amazing,” MacKenzie added. “We are hoping that our adorable photo will be a good opportunity to educate the public about service dogs and accommodating people with disabilities.”

New Jersey state senator calls customer who left 74-cent tip on a $119 bill a ‘jerk,' reveals name on Twitter

A New Jersey state senator called out a customer who left a 74-cent tip on bill that was over $100, calling him a “jerk” and revealing his name on Twitter.

Declan O’Scanlon, a Republican, ate at the Colts Neck Inn the night after the bad tipper and said the restaurant was abuzz that someone would leave such a small tip on a large bill.

“It strikes me that the jerks of the world tend to count on people not knowing they’re jerks and maybe it’s time for that to change,” O’Scanlon told northjersey.com. “This guy didn’t just fail to tip, he wanted it to sting. He calculated this and gave her 74 cents to make it hurt. And it did, and I think it sucks.”

O’Scanlon posted an unedited photo of the receipt which includes the customer’s name, signature and the last four digits of his debit card.
