networks cut DNC to an hour because they were worried about airing 2 hours of 'unpredictable" trump

TV news networks cut DNC to an hour because they were worried about airing two hours of 'unpredictable' Donald Trump's convention
Networks were reluctant to give DNC more airtime and do the same for the RNC
They are reportedly afraid of the unpredictability at Trump and GOP's event
Networks have been criticized for not 'fact checking' some Trump statements
Both conventions are to be virtual this year due to the coronavirus pandemic

But this year, TV executives reportedly told Democrats that they could not air two hours of the 2020 Democratic National Convention (DNC) nightly because they would then be required to give the same airtime to President Trump and the RNC.

They feared that doing so would bring levels of unpredictability from an editorial perspective, with one source telling The Daily Beast: 'We don't know what that content is going to be.'

Someone threw red paint on a billboard for Breonna Taylor on Tuesday in Louisville, Kentucky.

A billboard calling for action in the killing of Breonna Taylor was vandalized with red paint on Tuesday in her hometown of Louisville, Kentucky.

Oprah Winfrey's O Magazine put up 26 billboards around the city earlier this month demanding that the Louisville police officers involved in her death be arrested and charged.

Taylor, a 26-year-old EMT, was shot multiple times in March by police who were executing a no-knock warrant at her apartment.
The billboard featured a portrait of Taylor that is on the cover of the September issue of the magazine. It's the first time Winfrey was not featured on the cover of her namesake magazine in its 20-year history.

New German Law Makes It Mandatory to Walk Your Dog, It also bans leaving dogs alone all day

Germany is bringing in a new law that aims to make unwalked dogs and lonely puppies a thing of the past. Under the "Hundeverordnung"—Dogs Act—owners will be required to walk or otherwise exercise their dogs at least twice a day, for a total time of one hour, the BBC reports.

It will also be illegal to leave dogs alone all day, or leave them chained up, and puppies will be required to have human company for at least four hours a day. "Pets are not cuddly toys, their needs have to be taken into account," says Agriculture Minister Julia Klöckner.

Under the law, which is due to be introduced next year, dog breeders will be banned from looking after more than three litters at a time.löckner says the law is being introduced because evidence shows many of the country's 9.4 million dogs are not getting enough exercise, though critics say it is unrealistic, the Guardian reports. "I find it patronizing to be told how long I should take my dog out for. And who is going to check up on me?" says Berlin resident Bärbel Kleid, owner of a Yorkshire terrier called Sam. "Will the neighbour call the police if they suspect me of not taking Sam for long enough walks?"

Other dog owners argue that the law shouldn't apply to older dogs. The government says enforcement will be up to authorities in Germany's 16 states.

New Poll: Record 51% people are very angry. Previous record was 35%

https://www.cnn.com/2020/08/19/politics/cnn-poll-us-coronavirus-response-embarrassed/index.html

Nearly 7 in 10 Americans say the US response to the coronavirus outbreak makes them feel embarrassed, according to a new CNN Poll conducted by SSRS, as 62% of the public says President Donald Trump could be doing more to fight the outbreak.

The new poll finds disapproval of Trump's handling of the outbreak at a new high, 58%, as the share who say the worst of the pandemic is yet to come has risen to 55% after dropping through the spring. And as the virus has spread from the nation's cities throughout its countryside, the number who know someone who's been diagnosed with the virus has jumped dramatically to 67%, up from 40% in early June.
And Americans are angry. About 8 in 10 say they are at least somewhat angry about the way things are going in the country today, including an astonishing 51% who say they are very angry. CNN has asked this question in polling periodically since 2008, and the previous high for the share who said they were "very angry" was 35%, reached in 2008 and 2016.

The Post Office Mess Is Meant to Exhaust You. Trump is "flooding the zone." a form of censorship

The Post Office Mess Is Meant to Exhaust You. Don’t Let It.
Trump is “flooding the zone.” It’s a form of modern censorship.

In the Trump era, news doesn’t break, it invades. It doesn’t respect nights or weekends.

Many journalists live at the whim of President Trump’s Twitter feed. A rattled off Friday afternoon tweet from Mr. Trump about banning TikTok or a late night hint of an executive order means a weekend of wild goose chases around answering a fundamental question: Can he even do that?

It’s not just journalists who feel this exhaustion.

--------------------

People are confused and scared. Norms and institutions they took for granted are under threat. They want to know: Can he even do that?

-----

Mr. Trump’s recent interview with Axios’ Jonathan Swan was a full of similar examples. In just over 30 minutes the president peppered Mr. Swan with misleading charts about the coronavirus response and claims that it was under control, he bungled the history of absentee voting, he broke news that he’d reduce troop levels in Afghanistan by half and he tossed out claims about the Civil Rights Act. Despite Mr. Swan’s persistent and admirable grilling and calling out of the president’s lies, a number of Mr. Trump’s claims (including one about climate change) slipped past unchallenged. Had Mr. Swan rebutted each one, the conversation would have ground to a halt — there were simply too many lies per minute.

It’s exhausting and deliberate, part of a strategy best explained by the former Trump strategist Steve Bannon to “flood the zone” with garbage information. Vox’s Sean Illing detailed this in February, suggesting that the strategy was one reason that Mr. Trump’s impeachment did little to change public opinion of the president.

But the exhaustion feels more acute in recent days.
For instance, Mr. Trump’s effort to cripple the U.S. Postal Service by denying it essential funding and by installing loyalists in executive positions who are behind cutting overtime and removing sorting machines and collection boxes. It’s an attempt, by the president’s own admission, to influence the November election by suppressing mail-in voting. The president has also tried to suggest that voting by mail is a new phenomenon (it is absolutely not).
