Rump Faces Challenges Even in Red States, Poll Shows, as Women Favor Biden Close races

rump Faces Challenges Even in Red States, Poll Shows, as Women Favor Biden
Close races in Georgia, Iowa and Texas show President Trump’s vulnerability and suggest that Joseph Biden has assembled a formidable coalition, according to a New York Times/Siena College poll.

Mr. Trump’s vulnerability even in conservative-leaning states underscores just how precarious his political position is, less than six weeks before Election Day. While he and Mr. Biden are competing aggressively for traditional swing states like Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Florida, the poll suggests that Mr. Biden has assembled a coalition that could be formidable enough to jeopardize Mr. Trump in historically Republican parts of the South and Midwest.

A yawning gender gap in Georgia, Iowa and Texas is working in Mr. Biden’s favor, with the former vice president making inroads into conservative territory with strong support from women. In Iowa, where Mr. Biden is ahead of Mr. Trump, 45 percent to 42 percent, he is up among women by 14 percentage points. Men favor Mr. Trump by eight points.

In Georgia, where the two candidates are tied at 45 percent, Mr. Biden leads among women by 10 points. Mr. Trump is ahead with men by a similar margin of 11 percentage points.

Mr. Trump’s large advantage among men in Texas is enough to give him a small advantage there, 46 percent to 43 percent. Men prefer the president to his Democratic challenger by 16 points, while women favor Mr. Biden by an eight-point margin.

There was a significant gender gap in the 2016 election, too, but at that time it tilted toward Mr. Trump because men supported him so heavily, according to exit polls. In the Times poll, Mr. Biden sharply narrowed Mr. Trump’s advantage with men while improving on Hillary Clinton’s 2016 lead with women in Texas and Iowa.

'A eureka moment': The Airbnb for private California swimming pools is booming

https://www.sfgate.com/living-in-sf/article/Swimply-Airbnb-for-private-pools-Bay-Area-15591707.php

“Maybe it’s just me, but I think it would be weird to have people use your pool.”

My 10-year-old shouts this from the back of the car as I pull up to a stranger’s house to, uh, use their pool.

I’m in Palo Alto with my two oldest daughters on a Wednesday afternoon walking through the side yard of a $2 million-plus home. We walk past an open window and see one of the homeowners sitting on their couch watching TV, and I realize it’s not just my 10-year-old who thinks this is odd.

It is weird to use someone else’s pool. Especially while they’re home.

But let’s be honest: everything is weird in 2020. And if you can get past that, renting someone else’s pool is also sorta great.

Which Bunim Laskin is banking on you being able to do.

The New Jersey native launched Swimply — the Airbnb for swimming pools — in June of 2019, two summers after he first hatched the idea when his entire Lakewood, New Jersey, neighborhood started paying a nice neighbor to use their pool.

“In 2018 I dropped out of school and decided to do a small test in my local town and so I found pools on Google Earth and started knocking on doors,” he says via telephone. “I knocked on 80, and four said yes.”

Two years later, his four-pool test is now a legitimate 6,000-pool business that’s spread to 30 states. More than 25 percent of the pools on the site are located in California, and some pool owners are making up to $5,000 a month according to Laskin — which is a nice chunk of change in the middle of a pandemic.

Man dies from eating 1.5 bags of black licorice per day

Black licorice is disgusting tasting.

Too much candy: Man dies from eating bags of black licorice
Doctors say a Massachusetts construction worker’s love of black licorice wound up costing him his life

A Massachusetts construction worker’s love of black licorice wound up costing him his life. Eating a bag and a half every day for a few weeks threw his nutrients out of whack and caused the 54-year-old man’s heart to stop, doctors reported Wednesday.

“Even a small amount of licorice you eat can increase your blood pressure a little bit,” said Dr. Neel Butala, a cardiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital who described the case in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The problem is glycyrrhizic acid, found in black licorice and in many other foods and dietary supplements containing licorice root extract. It can cause dangerously low potassium and imbalances in other minerals called electrolytes.

Eating as little as 2 ounces of black licorice a day for two weeks could cause a heart rhythm problem, especially for folks over 40, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration warns.

“It’s more than licorice sticks. It could be jelly beans, licorice teas, a lot of things over the counter. Even some beers, like Belgian beers, have this compound in it,” as do some chewing tobaccos, said Dr. Robert Eckel, a University of Colorado cardiologist and former American Heart Association president. He had no role in the Massachusetts man’s care.

The death was clearly an extreme case. The man had switched from red, fruit-flavored twists to the black licorice version of the candy a few weeks before his death last year. He collapsed while having lunch at a fast-food restaurant. Doctors found he had dangerously low potassium, which led to heart rhythm and other problems. Emergency responders did CPR and he revived but died the next day.

Wells Fargo CEO apologizes for saying "there is a very limited pool of Black talent to recruit from"

the controversial statement was made in a June 16 memo : “the unfortunate reality is that there is a very limited pool of Black talent to recruit from with this specific experience.”

--------------------------------------------------------

Wells Fargo CEO Charlie Scharf has apologized after he blamed the lack of diversity at the bank on "a very limited pool of Black talent to recruit from."

In a memo to employees released by the bank, Scharf apologized for what he was was "an insensitive comment reflecting my own unconscious bias."

"There are many talented diverse individuals working at Wells Fargo (WFC) and throughout the financial services industry and I never meant to imply otherwise," he wrote. "It's clear to me that, across the industry, we have not done enough to improve diversity, especially at senior leadership levels. And there is no question Wells Fargo has to make meaningful progress to increase diverse representation."

Scharf's original comments, which were first reported by Reuters, were made in a June memo following widespread protests about the death of George Floyd and calls for greater diversity in corporate offices to address systemic racism.

Fact check: Trump Jr. touts baseless rigged-election claims to recruit 'army' for his dad

https://www.cnn.com/2020/09/23/politics/donald-trump-jr-baseless-rigged-election-fact-check/index.html

Donald Trump Jr. is touting baseless election-rigging claims in videos posted to Facebook and Twitter asking "able-bodied" people to join an election security "army" for his father.

Facebook and Twitter affixed labels to the video pointing to accurate information about voting, but neither company said the video violated its election integrity rules in a way that would result in it being removed.

Twitter labeled the video only after being asked about it by CNN on Wednesday. The video had been on its site since Monday.

"The radical left are laying the groundwork to steal this election from my father," Trump Jr. said in the video posted by the Trump campaign. He added, "Their plan is to add millions of fraudulent ballots that can cancel your vote and overturn the election."

'Really brilliant': Trump praises Ky. prosecutor after no charges in Breonna Taylor's death

President Donald Trump offered no kind words to Breonna Taylor's family Wednesday after Kentucky prosecutors announced they won't file any charges in the Black woman's death at the hands of police.

The president offered effusive praise for the chief prosecutor, though.

"I thought it was really brilliant," Trump said at the White House after he was asked about Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron's announcement that the only charges that will be brought in the Taylor case relate to the "endangerment" of her white neighbors.

"He's doing a fantastic job," Trump added of Cameron. "I think he's a star."

'Cake Boss' star Buddy Valastro impales hand in 'terrible' bowling accident

'Cake Boss' star Buddy Valastro impales hand in 'terrible' bowling accident
The injury was to Valastro's dominant right hand and he will need 'prolonged recovery & therapy'

The Food Network star's hand was impaled after getting it stuck in the bowling pinsetter, a representative for his company confirmed to Fox News on Wednesday. He underwent surgery earlier this week.

A malfunction with a pinsetter, which has been an easy fix in the past, caused Valastro's hand to become lodged and compressed inside the machine, his spokesperson said.

"Unable to remove his hand, he can see a 1 1/2 inch metal rod slowly and repeatedly impale his hand three times between his ring finger and middle finger," the spokesperson said.

More than five minutes elapsed and he was still unable to remove his hand. His son cut him free from the machine using a reciprocating saw, which he used to cut through the metal rod, the spokesperson said.

Crazy photo shows San Francisco's raccoon problem

https://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/raccoons-Golden-Gate-Park-San-Francisco-feeding-15591893.php

An S.F. father and son were walking their dog in Golden Gate Park on Thursday when they turned the corner and encountered 14 cavorting raccoons.

Marc Estoque and his boy were surprised to see the animals in broad daylight and approach so closely as they made their way along a trail next to North Lake near 43rd Avenue and Fulton.

"It was so surreal...a posse of bandits...like out of a movie," Estoque said. "And then two minutes later there was a coyote. I was waiting for the unicorn to pop out."

He captured photos and video of the moment and he's sharing them to raise awareness about an increasing problem in the park with people feeding wildlife and the animals losing their natural fear of humans and congregating in large groups. Estoque and his son didn't offer the critters food, but the raccoons were likely looking for snacks.

"We want to keep the animals wild," he said.

Wildlife ecologist Jonathan Young said food handouts to wildlife increases the potential for attacks on humans, and he has witnessed people in the park hand-feeding animals.

"I’ve seen it first hand in that area and people were feeding them in broad daylight," said Young, who works for the Presidio Trust. "And there were at least this many people huddled around that person. It’s not good. It’s really bad."
