The tilting on San Francisco's Millennium Tower is causing a plumbing problem

The tilting on San Francisco's Millennium Tower is causing a plumbing problem

A new problem may be bubbling up for residents of the lurching Millennium Tower in downtown San Francisco.

The building's tilt — now about 22 inches to the west due to the northwest corner sinking about 18 inches — may be causing lateral sewage pipes to not drain correctly and has already resulted in “some plugging” on the third floor, according to a letter from the chief engineer to the city, obtained by NBC News.

A separate San Francisco Department of Building Inspection report filed Aug. 27, obtained by SFGATE, saw "evidence of water intrusion through the basement walls of the subterranean levels and signs of past settlement," from the tower's earlier sinking.

"The team identified several areas in which seals on building drains exiting the building appeared to be leaking ground water from outside the building to the inside," the report reads. The team also observed "water seepage from the basement wall into the sewage ejector room."

The letter states that the inspectors "did not find any observable variation" from their previous inspection in March.

Chief engineer Ronald Hamburger added, “there are not current effects that compromise either building safety or habitability. As settlement and tilting has now returned to pre-construction levels, we do not anticipate any will occur.”

A sheriff went to a teenagers house and threatened arrest if she didn't remove a COVID19 post

A Wisconsin teenager won a lawsuit against a sheriff and his deputy who allegedly threatened to have her jailed if she didn't remove a social media post about her COVID-19 experience in March 2020, the Wausau Daily Herald reported.

On Friday, US District Judge Brett Ludwig ruled that student Amyiah Cohoon's free speech rights had been violated.

"Demanding a 16-year-old remove protected speech from her Instagram account is a First Amendment violation," Ludwig said in the ruling.

According to court documents, Cohoon, after returning from a spring break trip to Florida with the Westfield Area High School band on March 15, 2020, suspected she had been infected with the coronavirus. On March 26, she posted about her illness, including a photo of her wearing an oxygen mask in a hospital.
------------
On March 27, 2020, Marquette County Sheriff Joseph Konrath sent a Sgt. Cameron Klump to Coohon's home. Klump then allegedly threatened Cohoon with arrest if she didn't remove the posts. Cohoon took down the posts at Klump's request.

Cohoon's attorney, Luke Berg, told the Associated Press in April 2020 that the school's administrator, Bob Meicher, had called Konrath about the posts. Cohoon's parents also reportedly contacted the parents of other students on the trip to warn them about the possible exposure.

No driving, working or dating: This program controls people leaving psych hospitals

Venus Moore had been released from the California psychiatric hospital where she was confined for years. But she was far from free.

The pandemic was raging, and her sister could provide a safe place for her to live. But Moore, 48, was required instead to live locked inside a care home for seniors. She was not allowed to drive, work, open a bank account, travel or date.

The restrictions stemmed from something that had happened two decades earlier. In 2001, diagnosed with a mental illness and experiencing hallucinations, she stabbed a relative. She was charged with assault with a deadly weapon and inflicting great bodily injury. If she had been found guilty of these crimes, she could have served up to seven years in prison. Instead, she was found not guilty by reason of insanity and sent to a state hospital indefinitely.

After years of treatment, her doctors decided in 2012 that she was stable enough to return to Los Angeles. She was put on “forensic conditional release,” more commonly known as CONREP: a statewide outpatient program that primarily supervises and treats people leaving psychiatric hospitals who landed there because of serious criminal charges.

“Everybody’s familiar with probation and parole,” said Jean Matulis, a lawyer who has represented people on CONREP since 1991. “This is all-inclusive, complete control of every moment of the person’s waking life.” And it can continue “forever and ever.”

Tennessee shooter identified as Uk Thang, 29 years old, third party vendor at Kroger

https://heavy.com/news/uk-thang

Uk Thang was identified as the gunman who shot 15 people, one fatally, at a Kroger grocery store in Collierville, Tennessee.

Collierville Police Chief Dale Lane confirmed in a news conference that the gunman shot 15 victims, with some in serious condition. Thang was 29 years old and shot and killed himself at the scene; he was found in the rear of the store. Police declined to give his name in a news conference, but they released it to the news media afterwards, according to the Daily Memphian.

-----------

Uk Thang’s cousin, Pang Cing, told The Daily Beast that he learned the news from Thang’s parents but hadn’t seen him in 10 years.

Bawi Thang knew Thang, although they are not related, and told Daily Beast Thang was “always involved in church. I always looked up to him.” Those accounts increase the mystery as to what made the gunman snap and become a mass murderer, according to police.

------------------------------------

“They had to walk the guy out yesterday morning. I think it was round about 9:00,” said Clark. “His boss came and they were talking to him about what happened. They had to walk him out and he didn’t really want them to walk him out. They said they were gonna call the police. But I guess he left at that point.”

She describes Thang as quiet, only conversing with the other sushi workers and sometimes arguing with other co-workers.

“I never said much to him. I think he was pretty off to himself. People had said he don’t like people to speak with him,” said Clark.

Vivian Harris thinks she ran into Thang at another Kroger store in Whitehaven earlier in the day, talking to him as he was making a delivery to the sushi department.

crazy racist Paul LePage has returned to Maine and filed for run for his old office (governor)

LEWISTON, Maine — Remember Paul LePage? Sure you do. He’s the former governor of Maine who has called himself, accurately enough, “Donald Trump before Donald Trump” — a hot-headed, vulgar and sometimes erratic figure who regularly made international headlines for doing things like celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day by telling the NAACP to “kiss my butt,” rushing up to a television crew at the State House to volunteer that a state senator liked “to give it to the people without providing Vaseline,” and leaving an unhinged, obscenity-filled message for a Democratic legislator which he said he wanted recorded and released “because I am after you.”

He joyfully mused about bombing newspaper offices and shooting rivals, cartoonists, and lawmakers. His final term was spent tangling with legislative leaders of his own party, having his vetoes of bipartisan legislation and budgets overturned, and watching his handpicked successor get walloped by Janet Mills, the Democratic attorney general with whom he had regularly sparred.

When term limits ended his governorship in 2018, he didn’t just leave office; he left Maine. “I’m going to retire and go to Florida,” he proclaimed just before Election Day, to the relief not only of Democrats but much of his own party. “I’m done with politics. I’ve done my eight years. It’s time for somebody else.”

But now: He’s back. Making good on years of threats, he filed papers last month to run for his old office against Mills, a popular incumbent backed by Democratic legislative majorities whose approval ratings have generally run more than 10 points higher than LePage’s best ratings during his eight years in office. And on Wednesday evening, he held a kickoff rally at the Augusta Civic Center, touting his fiscal austerity and casting his opponent as a tax-and-spend liberal who’d disrupted the economy and the future of schoolchildren by imposing lockdowns and closures during the pandemic. "May the Almighty give us the strength and wisdom to overcome what divides us," he concluded.
