Steve Garvey, retired Dodger, still considering running for Feinstein Senate seat as republican

It’s been a good three months since retired Major League Baseball great Steve Garvey let it be known that he was considering a run for Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s seat.

“Steve is seriously considering entering this race and speaking directly with voters on the issues they care most about,” Garvey’s adviser, Andy Gharakhani wrote in an email Wednesday.

_____

If he does run, the retired Dodger first baseman would instantly become one of the most recognizable candidates of 2024, not just in California, but also in the entire country. Whether that translates into votes is another story.

It would be tough — if not impossible — for any Republican to win a Senate seat in deep blue California, where Democrats outnumber Republicans roughly 2-to-1. It is conceivable, though, that Garvey could survive the March primary and wind up on the November ballot. (In California, the top two vote-getters advance to the general election, regardless of political party.) That would breathe some life into California’s flailing Republican Party and would give Garvey a platform for his views on issues like crime and taxes.

Calif mom gave 15 yr old keys to Dodge Challenger to run to store. He fled cops at 100mph killing 1

Killing passenger. Don't hand over car keys to unlicensed 15 yr old

California mom, 45, charged after teen son allegedly causes fatal crash

https://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/california-mom-charged-teen-fatal-crash-18371670.php

A California mother has been charged with child cruelty after her 15-year-old son allegedly caused a fatal car crash, police said.

In June, an officer from the Bakersfield Police Department said they witnessed a Dodge Challenger driving through the grass at Polo Park. When the officer attempted to pull over the car, police said the driver fled. The driver apparently lost control of the Challenger and crashed into a tree on Noriega Road, injuring himself and three teen passengers who were inside, police said.

Media coverage at the time reported that a teenage boy in the front passenger seat was critically injured in the collision. Now, police have revealed one occupant of the vehicle died.

According to police reports reviewed by KGET, the 15-year-old unlicensed driver raced away from the scene at up to 100 mph. After crashing into a tree, the police reports say a boy in the front passenger seat had to be rescued from the car by a responding officer; the teen later died after incurring head trauma in the crash. The driver has not been identified because he is a minor.

The alleged driver's mother has also been charged in connection with the fatal crash. According to Kern County court records, the 45-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of willful cruelty to a child, a felony, and allowing an unlicensed person to operate a vehicle, a misdemeanor. KGET reported that she "gave her 15-year-old son the keys to her Dodge Challenger with the expectation he would only make a quick trip to the market and come straight home.".

I Watched a Bunch of PragerU Kids Videos and... Yikes!

https://www.thedailybeast.com/i-watched-a-bunch-of-prageru-kids-videos-and-yikes

I felt like I had a handle on the historical material—however batshit it might be—but nothing could have prepared me for PragerU Kids’ foray into culture and identity.

Less than a minute into some dude telling me how to “Embrace My Femininity” by “smiling more”—followed by a young girl “tweensplaining” that gender stereotypes exist because they reflect how men and women are “naturally different” and that I should “master the art of makeup”—I realized that their content could in fact, get worse. Much worse.

____

Later, I struggled to get through a whole eight minutes and 38 seconds of “Patriotism in the Midst of Persecution”—as it was explained to children by an animated Sadao Munemori, the first Japanese American to be awarded the Medal of Honor.

The patronizing and painfully flat dialogue coupled with the obnoxiously inquisitive main character, Leo, was bad enough, but upon realizing the lesson being delivered to kids was essentially, “Yes, my Japanese parents were placed in internment camps by this country, but I don’t have any hard feelings about it,” I contemplated launching my laptop straight toward the hardest surface available.

-----
The late general and ex-president tells Leo that while he could have boasted and “danced around” after winning the war, he didn’t want the guy who fought to protect slavery to feel bad. He describes Robert E. Lee as “a good man” and that when it came to the fight over slavery, they “just got caught on the opposite side of things.”

-----

And it’s not just the blatant indoctrination, trying to find even one single PragerU Kids video that isn’t rife with disinformation and outright lies is like trying to find an actual journalist on Newsmax.

Los Angeles County Sheriff found shot in his car by unidentified attacker

https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2023-09-16/on-duty-los-angeles-sheriffs-deputy-shot-near-palmdale-station

Los Angeles County sheriff‘s deputy was ambushed and killed Saturday night, when he was shot in the head by an unidentified attacker while sitting in his patrol cruiser outside the Palmdale station.

Sheriff Robert Luna called it a “targeted act” and speculated that Deputy Ryan Clinkunbroomer may have been killed because he worked in law enforcement.

“Somebody decided to shoot and murder him, I’m assuming, at this point, because he was in uniform,” Luna said at the late-night news conference.

A passerby found Clinkunbroomer unconscious in his vehicle at the intersection of Avenue Q and Sierra Highway around 6 p.m., officials said. The deputy was rushed to a Lancaster hospital in critical condition.

“Despite the medical staff’s best efforts to save our deputy’s life, regrettably he succumbed to his injuries,” Luna said.

Security video shared with The Times shows a black car pulling up behind the deputy’s cruiser and pausing. Seconds later, the black car pulls up a little farther, stops at the driver’s side of the cruiser and pauses again.

Then, the black car speeds off. The deputy’s vehicle drifts forward a foot or two and stops moving.

Rolling Stone co-founder Jann Wenner removed from Rock Hall leadership after controversial

NEW YORK (AP) — Jann Wenner, who co-founded Rolling Stone magazine and also was a co-founder of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, has been removed from the hall’s board of directors after making comments that were seen as disparaging toward Black and female musicians.

---

Asked why he didn’t interview women or Black musicians, Wenner responded: “It’s not that they’re inarticulate, although, go have a deep conversation with Grace Slick or Janis Joplin. Please, be my guest. You know, Joni (Mitchell) was not a philosopher of rock ’n’ roll. She didn’t, in my mind, meet that test,” he told the Times.

“Of Black artists — you know, Stevie Wonder, genius, right? I suppose when you use a word as broad as ‘masters,’ the fault is using that word. Maybe Marvin Gaye, or Curtis Mayfield? I mean, they just didn’t articulate at that level,” Wenner said.

Wenner co-founded Rolling Stone in 1967 and served as its editor or editorial director until 2019. He also co-founded the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, which was launched in 1987.

In the interview, Wenner seemed to acknowledge he would face a backlash. “Just for public relations sake, maybe I should have gone and found one Black and one woman artist to include here that didn’t measure up to that same historical standard, just to avert this kind of criticism.”

French political candidate criticized for edited photos in campaign material

Ms De Causans from the small centre party called Europe Ecologie Egalite later admitted to enhancing her look, according to reports. She said it is more likely to boost her party’s cause of supporting Europe and the environment. But social media users were quick to slam her for the airbrushing. "You are misleading voters with your campaign photo. It’s pathetic, I’m not voting for you anymore. Return to the Ardennes we deserve better", wrote one on her Instagram account.

Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders signs law restricting release of her travel, security records

https://apnews.com/article/huckabee-sanders-travel-security-arkansas-records-320300ea14af98adf88e2a2d39647a94

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders signed a law Thursday restricting release of her travel and security records after the Legislature wrapped up a special session marked by a fight to more broadly scale back the state Freedom of Information Act.

The law, which took effect immediately, allows the state to wall off details about the security provided the GOP governor and other constitutional officers, including who travels on the State Police airplane and the cost of individual trips. Proposed changes to the 1967 law protecting the public’s access to government records were among several items Sanders had placed on the agenda for a session that met this week.

Sanders has argued the restrictions are needed to protect her and her family, citing threats she’s faced since taking office and going back to her time as White House press secretary for former President Donald Trump.

We protected the police officers who protect our constitutional officers and my family in keeping their security information and tactics exempt from Freedom of Information Act disclosure,” Sanders said before signing the measure, about two hours after lawmakers gave it final it approval.

Illegal Mopeds and Fake Names: Migrants Scrape By in Underground Economy

Illegal Mopeds and Fake Names: Migrants Scrape By in Underground Economy
The newest migrants in New York need money but are prohibited from working. A secondary market of fake app logins and weekly bike rentals has emerged

After Mayco Milano, a migrant from Venezuela, arrived in New York in late May, he spent a month walking all over Manhattan in search of work. Mr. Milano, who does not speak English, was turned down by countless restaurants. He landed a construction job, but it ended after three days, after he was asked for his Social Security number.

-----

He found a Venezuelan man in Queens who rents mopeds by the week; he found a Dominican man who supplies functional Uber Eats logins for a fee. And with that, Mr. Milano joined New York City’s shadow army of 65,000 food delivery workers.

-------

Mr. Milano, desperate to pay back the large debts he incurred in bringing his wife and three children to the United States, rents a moped (with helmet, lock and bag, but no license plate) for $400 a week; for the privilege of using an Uber Eats profile under the name “Jessica,” he pays a weekly cut of $150 to a Venezuelan woman.

These black-market fees eat up most of what he earns, but they enable him to work, which he does for more than 10 hours a day, seven days a week. He makes deliveries all over Manhattan and into Brooklyn, sometimes as many as 30 a day.

https://www.nytimes.com/2023/09/15/nyregion/migrant-delivery-unlicensed-moped.html

In July, after a good week during which he made $890 on the app — his share would be a little more than $300 — the person whose account he was renting disappeared without paying him. Mr. Milano had to borrow money from another migrant to cover his moped rental.
