How Democrats in rural Northern California, deep in MAGA country, are growing stronger

Alice Rogers admitted that identifying as a Democrat in Siskiyou County felt a bit “like coming out.” She stood under a canopy of tall trees in Weed’s Carrick Park on a warm June afternoon along with about 100 other local Democrats at the county party’s annual fundraising dinner.

Like many Democratic women across the U.S., Rogers, the chair of the Democratic Central Committee of Siskiyou County, and Robin Richards, the committee’s treasurer, were called to action after the election Donald Trump in 2016, as they watched their Republican neighbors ride the MAGA wave further to the right.

T “I didn’t know there were other Democrats in Siskiyou County,” said Rogers, a lifelong Democrat. But as she and Richards realized there were more Democrats than they thought — 35% of the county voted for Hillary Clinton — they began to strategize. “We were so angry,” said Rogers. “And we were both retired, so we had the time for it.”

Rural north state Democrats have long understood that the real action for their party is in Los Angeles, the Bay Area and Sacramento. Even though the region north of Sacramento is geographically enormous, its population and wealth simply aren’t enough to influence state politics. But these days, rural Democrats, in Siskiyou especially, feel surrounded by increasingly empowered conspiracy theorists, separatists, and extremists. They sense that grassroots organizing is more important than ever.

UC regents reject reportedly $12-million home for Black president after racist attack on current house

University of California regents late Wednesday rejected a proposal to buy a new home for President Michael V. Drake after his current Berkeley residence was defaced by racist graffiti and came under other attacks this year.

The purchase of a new residence would have been financed with private funds but regents, meeting in closed session, voted 13-7 against the proposal, according to board minutes, and will seek other alternatives to secure safe housing for Drake and his family.

Drake, the UC system’s first Black president in its 155-year history, was not at home when a vandal spray-painted racial slurs and profanity on the front and back of the home in May. But the attack horrified the UC and Berkeley community, led to an ongoing hate crime investigation by local law enforcement and fueled alarm over the need for better security for Drake and his wife, Brenda.

The racist attack followed other incidents, including the smashing of one of the house windows and intrusion onto the property by trespassers during the five-week strike by UC academic workers late last year. UC erected a fence around the perimeter in March, but a UC official said the vandal involved in the racist graffiti jumped over the fence to deface the property.

____

In the May vandalism, the perpetrator also spray-painted “Jan. 6, 2021” — the day of the violent insurrection at the U.S. Capitol — on Drake’s residence and other homes in the area, according to the Berkeley Scanner, which first reported the attack.

Alex Jones blew $93K in a month on dining and vacations as Sandy Hook victims await settlement money

Heavily indebted “InfoWars” host Alex Jones blew through nearly $100,000 in a single month this summer on expenses including dining, vacations and entertainment.

Meanwhile, the families he tormented with lies about the murders of their loved ones during the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre continue to await nearly $1.5 billion in damages the conspiracy theorist was ordered to pay in November.

Jones — who’s worth an estimated $14 million despite claiming financial hardship — went through $93,000 in July alone. His expenses included nearly $8,000 in housekeeping costs and $6,700 for a Texas lake house he uses as a second home, according to an expenditure report filed with a Connecticut bankruptcy court. Jones also spent $5,600 on his boats and vehicles that month.

“It is disturbing that Alex Jones continues to spend money on excessive household expenditures and his extravagant lifestyle when that money rightfully belongs to the families he spent years tormenting,” a lawyer representing some of the plaintiffs told The Associated Press.

Busted: Florida neo-Nazi arrested for hanging swastikas on overpass

A Florida man allegedly responsible for hanging swastikas and anti-Semitic propaganda banners on a bridge overlooking Interstate 4 has been arrested under a new law designed to prohibit such displays, reported WTSP on Wednesday.

"Jason Brown, a 48-year-old from Cape Canaveral, was arrested for his alleged actions on June 10. But he didn't work alone, FDLE agents said. Currently, there are three outstanding warrants for additional demonstrators who reportedly participated but live out of state," reported Claire Farrow. "Brown is a self-proclaimed member of the antisemitic, extremist group 'Order of the Black Sun,' FDLE agents said."

Brown is one of the first people to be charged under Florida H.B. 269, a new statute signed into law by Gov. Ron DeSantis earlier this year. Among other things, the law prohibits people from displaying banners or projecting images onto buildings or structures without the consent of the property owner.

Black GOP Tim Scott says racial discrim doesn't exist but discrim to talk about him never marrying

https://www.businessinsider.com/tim-scott-responds-gay-rumors-unmarried-black-2024-campaign-2023-9

Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina has a theory about why people are drawing attention to the fact that he's never been married.

"It's like a different form of discrimination or bias," the 2024 GOP presidential candidate told the Washington Post. "You can't say I'm Black, because that would be terrible, so find something else that you can attack."

Scott also said other GOP contenders may be seeking to "sow seeds of doubt" about his campaign and finding a way to say "that guy isn't one of us" with the insinuations about his personal life.

But Scott, his political confidants, and his friends all insist that he's not gay. In fact, Scott insists he has a girlfriend, though the campaign declined to identify her to the Post.

Teen boy goes rampage against cyclists..killing one..Huntington Beach Calif

Teenage Driver Targeted Cyclists, Killing One, California Police Say

A teenage driver was arrested after the authorities said he intentionally struck three bicyclists, killing one, in three separate incidents that took place in Huntington Beach, Calif., on Sunday night, police said on Wednesday.

The Huntington Beach Police Department identified the slain bicyclist as 70-year-old Steven Gonzales, a resident of the city. The suspect, who was arrested on Tuesday night and was only identified as a juvenile male between 14 and 18 years old, is charged with homicide and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, the police said.

The police said on Monday that they had responded to three hit-and-run reports in about 45 minutes on Sunday night. The collisions had happened within a mile of each other.

The first call came in around 10:30 p.m. local time, and the bicyclist said a vehicle had “intentionally sideswiped” him, then fled the scene, the police said. The bicyclist had minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

About 15 minutes later, the officers were still investigating the hit and run when they received calls about another bicyclist, who was lying in the street. That bicyclist was treated by paramedics but died from his injuries, the police said.

Police officers were investigating both incidents when a man called and said he had been riding his bicycle in a crosswalk around 10 p.m. when he was hit by a vehicle that then drove away. The bicyclist had minor injuries.

WALTERS SAYS PRAGERU WILL BE IN 'EVERY SCHOOL'

By: Amy Slanchik

News On 6 is seeking clarification from the state superintendent when it comes to bringing PragerU materials to Oklahoma schools.

======

Ryan Walters spoke in Tulsa Sunday night, telling a crowd that PragerU content will be in every school instead of just an option.

Tulsa Classroom Teachers Association said districts do not have to use this material.

Several, including Broken Arrow, Jenks, and Union, have said they don’t have any plans to use PragerU's content, but the State Superintendent got the crowd excited about the idea Sunday night. At an event at Sheridan Church featuring Lara Trump, Republican State Superintendent Ryan Walters had this message for the crowd:

“And what are we doing here in Oklahoma, folks? We are continuing that MAGA agenda. We are gonna put parents in charge of their kids. We're not gonna have pornography in schools; we're gonna have -- hey -- no pornography. We're gonna have PragerU in every school. How about that?"

But last week, Walters said the State Education Department would not require schools to use the material.

“This is an option that’s available,” Walters said.
