Nunes used political donations to buy $15k Celtics tickets, lavish dinners

https://twitter.com/An3ita5/status/1210619899816685568

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes, R-Calif., used funds from New PAC, his leadership political action committee, to purchase steak dinners, limo rides, and nearly $15,000 in Boston Celtics basketball games tickets, Federal Election Commission (FEC) filings show.

The expenditures were first reported by the Fresno Bee and do not appear to break any federal laws.

A leadership PAC like Nunes' New PAC is a separate pot of money from a lawmaker's own campaign fund, intended to help politicians strategically finance other candidates' campaigns. In recent years, however, leadership PACs have increasingly been used to pay for lavish trips, meals and hotel stays, rather than to support political allies.

Nunes’ New PAC expenditures have been particularly conspicuous. FEC filings show that New PAC spent a total of $14,638 at TD Garden, the home of the Boston Celtics, on three occasions between February and May 2017.

New PAC dropped an additional $3,593 at the 4-star Omni Parker House hotel on May 8, the same day that the fund purchased tickets for the Celtics' playoffs against the Washington Wizards.

2018 quarterly filings for New PAC show a number of more recent luxury expenditures. On March 9, bills at seven different restaurants in Las Vegas totaled over $7,000.

Among them: $2,365 at The Dorsey, a cocktail bar offering to serve Dom Perignon and other fine liquors directly from a disco ball as part of its "Disco Punch Bowl Pairings" special.

Exactly a month ago, on June 19, the PAC charged $5,075 to Gold Coast Limousine service and $4,408 at the Sea Venture hotel in Pismo Beach, Calif.

Several restaurants and luxury hotels show up repeatedly on the congressman’s filings. New PAC has spent over $10,000 since July of last year in frequent visits to The Prime Rib D.C., an upscale steakhouse. The restaurant boasts tuxedoed waitstaff intended to “evoke the elegant supper clubs of 1940’s Manhattan.”

The PAC is funded by typical GOP donors such as Koch Industries.

The largest donation to the PAC in 2017-2018 fiscal year came from Northrop Grumman, a defense company that was the fifth-largest arms trader in the world as of 2015, followed by tobacco company Altria Group (formerly Philip Morris). Other top donors include defense companies Lockheed Martin and Raytheon Co, and California-based dairy, almond and wine industry lobbyists.

Kevin Spacey Accuser Dies by Suicide
Author and former Norwegian royal said disgraced actor groped him at 2007 Nobel Peace Prize concert

An author and former Norwegian royal who accused Kevin Spacey of groping him died by suicide at the age of 47 Wednesday. Ari Behn — who said in 2017 that the disgraced actor groped him during a Nobel Peace Prize concert in 2007 — is the second Spacey accuser to die in the past three months.

“It’s with great sorrow in our hearts that we, those closest to Ari Behn, must report that he took his own life today. We ask for respect for our private lives in the time to come,” Behn’s manager told Norwegian newspaper VG (via The Hollywood Reporter).

Behn was married to Norwegian Princess Martha Louise from 2002 to 2016, and in recent years was candid about his battles with alcoholism.

Spacey served as co-host of the Nobel Peace Prize concert when the alleged incident occurred. “We had a nice conversation, he was sitting right next to me,” Behn told a Norwegian radio station in 2017. “After five minutes, he says, ‘Hey, let’s go out and have a cigarette.’ And then he takes me under the table in the middle of my balls. I got more than I bargained for.”

I was a mess back then as an angry Trump supporter. Being a liberal has brought me down to earth in realizing the person I was. Having empathy encouraged me to get PTSD therapy, getting an education, being a better role model for my kids. I came a long way and I’m ready for 2020.

A family needed to be rescued in Colorado's snowy mountains. Officials say it's a reminder to be prepared for anything

family stranded in the snowy expanses of the Rockies was found safe on Christmas Eve after going missing for 24 hours.

The couple in their early 30s and their 12-year-old daughter had set off from El Paso, Texas, en route to Norwood, Colorado, to make a furniture delivery. That journey is nearly 600 miles and could take 10 hours by car.
But in Colorado's San Juan National Forest, their rented Penske truck got stuck in the snow.

----

"The family stayed warm by running the truck engine and covering with furniture blankets," Lilly said. "This morning they wrapped their tennis shoes with shipping plastic to help walk in snow and started walking."

Authorities didn't identify the family members by name. No one was injured.

But their story is a cautionary tale about the perils of facing the unforgiving elements during the winter months.
Their GPS failed them

As the family was taking its chances on foot, authorities were mounting a multiagency rescue operation across three counties.
The three family members were reported missing Monday evening after they failed to show up for the furniture delivery that had been set for earlier in the day.
One member of the sheriff's office was flying a personal aircraft as part of the search. His efforts bore fruit just before 9 a.m. Tuesday.

That's when authorities spotted the truck in a rugged area near Belmear Mountain. And it wasn't long before they saw the family walking.
"The party told deputies they ended up on this road because their GPS told them it was the fastest route from Durango to Norwood," Lilly said.
In a tweet, San Miguel County Sheriff Bill Masters said the story shows it's important for people to keep extra food and water in their vehicles along with warm gear to help brave chilly emergencies.
"The family is lucky to have had moderate temperatures and our ability to use aircraft to locate them," Masters said.

Trump admin shuts down pollution-tracking map

A federal database tracking pollution in the United States was retired earlier this month, drawing criticism from environmental advocates.

TOXMAP, an interactive map hosted by the National Library of Medicine (NLM) and accessible to the public, allowed users to track pollution-producing factories and other environmental concerns such as superfund cleanup sites.

However, on Dec. 16, all links to the application on the NLM's website were deprecated, following an announcement from the agency in September notifying users that the site would be "retired."

"On December 16, 2019, the National Library of Medicine (NLM) TOXNET (TOXicology Data NETwork) website will be retired," read the NLM's statement at the time. "Most con
