California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) officials said in a statement Friday a debris flow from the hillside above the roadway "overwhelmed drainage infrastructure, flowed across the highway, and eroded the road resulting in the complete loss of a segment of Highway 1" at Rat Creek, about 15 miles south of Big Sur, a mountainous stretch of the state's central coast.
California Highway Patrol Officer John Yerace said he was in the area on Thursday around 4 p.m. when he noticed "this section of roadway, specifically the southbound lane, had fallen off into the ocean."
Images and drone footage from the scene show a huge gap in the scenic highway, which runs along much of the California coast.

famous private investigator gravely injured during robbery, not expected to survive
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Jack Palladino, the private investigator who worked on high-profile cases ranging from the Jonestown mass suicides to celebrity and political scandals, has been placed on life support after suffering a head injury during an attempted robbery.
Palladino, 70, had just stepped outside his San Francisco home on Thursday to try out his new camera when a car pulled up and a man jumped out to grab it from him, police and the detective's stepson Nick Chapman told the San Francisco Chronicle.
As the suspect grabbed the camera, Palladino fell and hit his head on the pavement, causing a traumatic head injury. Chapman said Palladino was not expected to survive after undergoing surgery to stop the massive bleeding
Palladino was wrapping up one final case before joining his wife and work partner, Sandra Sutherland, in retirement. Since the 1980s, the two conducted investigations out of their Victorian home in the city's Haight-Ashbury neighborhood, on behalf of the famous and powerful as well as the underdogs.

Grape-Nuts, Supermarket Mainstay, Is No Longer So Easy to Find - boxes listed for up to $110
Grape-Nuts cereal, the supermarket mainstay that is made of neither grapes nor nuts, beloved by some and hated by others, has become hard to find.Supply-chain constraints and higher demand for the cereal amid the pandemic have led to shortages of the product, Kristin DeRock, Grape-Nuts brand manager for the cereal company Post Consumer Brands, said in a statement on Friday.
Grape-Nuts is made using a proprietary technology and a production process that isnt easily replicated, which has made it more difficult to shift production to meet demand during this time, she said, without elaborating on that technology or process. She said that the company was working to get Grape-Nuts fully back on store shelves, which we expect to be this spring.
---------
Some hungry customers, foiled in grocery stores, tried the internet to search for the product, only to find that prices could be far above normal. Grape-Nuts said the manufacturer-suggested retail price for a 29-ounce box is $4.99.
On Amazon, one pack of four boxes, each 29 ounces, was listed for $59.99 Friday afternoon. On eBay, a similar pack of two boxes was available for $55. And on Walmart.com, a 64 ounce box was listed for $110.

it's a matter of national interest that Trump never have a presidential library
Trump wants a library. He must never have one.--------
None of this, however, means that Trump could actually create a presidential center similar to the one planned for former president Barack Obama, or those dedicated to former presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton. As Anthony Clark, author of The Last Campaign: How Presidents Rewrite History, Run for Posterity & Enshrine Their Legacies, wrote recently in Politico, it is unlikely that Trump has the focus, administrative savvy and financial resources to execute a presidential center: Presidential libraries are complicated. And if you understand how they work and how Trump himself works its nearly impossible to imagine him actually pulling it off, Clark writes.
But that doesnt mean that Trump wont try and that, in trying, cause further damage to the country. That is why Congress should use this moment to reconsider the legislation that helped create and shape the presidential libraries now administered by the National Archives, not just to prevent Trump from perpetrating one last, giant grift, but to reform the system so it serves the country better. This is long overdue, and would need to be done even if Trump werent trying to raise $2 billion for a Trump center. But his intention to do so makes this urgent, even an issue of national security.
------------
Ordinarily, presidential records cant be accessed for five, and up to 12, years after a chief executive leaves office. And before leaving office, a president has significant leverage over what the public eventually can see, which documents are delivered to the Archives, which are considered public and which are private, and to weigh in on other matters, including security and the national interest.
The case of Trump is exceptional by any standard, and he should be afforded no discretion over his records or any privilege to extend the amount of time before the public can see them. Trumps 2017 requirement that the National Archives withhold access to his materials until 2033 should be abrogated, and Congress should begin an extraordinary effort to recover as much of his communications legacy as possible, even material that wasnt deemed presidential. Trumps presidency mixed public and private interests in a way that was unprecedented in modern American history, so his decisions on these matters cant be trusted. He incited an insurrection, and many of the people who may have participated in that, including members of Congress, are still actively engaged in public life. The need to know who they are and what they did isnt just a matter for the FBI, the Justice Department and prosecutors.
