The Tucson Police Department moved swiftly on Tuesday to fire a police officer after he fatally shot a man in a motorized wheelchair who was suspected of stealing a toolbox from a Walmart and flashing a knife when challenged.
Police bodycam video shows an officer pursuing the suspect and yelling, “Do not go into the store, sir,” as the man, identified as Richard Lee Richards, 61, continued to the entrance of a Lowe’s Home Improvement store on Monday night. The officer, Ryan Remington, fired nine shots and hit the man in the back and side, the police said, causing Mr. Richards to hunch over and fall in front of a display of pink and red flowers.
A store surveillance video shows Officer Remington placing handcuffs on a motionless Mr. Richards.
At a news conference on Tuesday, Police Chief Chris Magnus said he was “deeply disturbed and troubled” by Officer Remington’s actions.
“His use of deadly force in this incident is a clear violation of department policy and directly contradicts multiple aspects of our use of force and training,” Chief Magnus said. “As a result, the department moved earlier today to terminate Officer Remington.”

A police officer and two others were killed in a shooting in Georgia on Tuesday night.

Officers received fire from an unknown location while trying to locate the juvenile victim and render aid to the female victim, police said.
Three people have died, including Clayton County field training officer Henry Laxson.
Another Clayton County police officer, Alex Chandler, was shot in the hand, police said, while a juvenile victim is in a critical, but stable condition.
Police said the suspect in the shooting was killed during the exchange of gunfire with law enforcement.

A tree, weighing in at 100,000 pounds according to firefighters, came crashing down on a home in Encino late Sunday night, resulting in the death of one man.
A tree fell on a home in Encino, trapping two people and a dog who were able to escape, and killing a 60-year-old man.
Firefighters from the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to the call around 11 p.m. on Sunday, and arrived to see that the huge oak tree had fallen, with great force, on a two-story home on Odessa Avenue.
The Urban Search and Rescue team, along with 30 firefighters, assisted those inside the home.
Two women, and the family dog, were trapped on the first floor. They were able to escape with the assistance of the fire department.
A man in his 60s was found on the second floor of the home, killed by the tree's collapse.
It's too early to say what caused the tree to fall in the first place, but firefighters say it does not appear to be related to the weather.

Although winds were calm Sunday night, strong gusts did blow through the region just last week.
Neighbor Tony Montero said he often expressed concerns to his wife that the tree looked dangerous.
“It was leaning directly over the house … it was probably 30 degrees,” Montero said.
Kevin Franks said the family has followed the rules set forth by the city to maintaining the tree, including working with an arborist and using chains to “keep stuff from falling.”

The woman appeared to be extremely distressed as she ran around the tarmac while trying to escape the clutches of a man who was dressed in black who attempted to restrain her.
At one point she managed to get extremely close to the waiting aircraft and was pulled away and pushed back by the man.

– A 21-year-old embattled Kansas lawmaker was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving—his second arrest in less than a month—and is facing fresh calls for his resignation or removal from office. A Kansas trooper arrested Aaron Coleman around 1am Saturday on Interstate 70 near Lawrence, the Kansas Highway Patrol said. Coleman was taken to the Douglas County Jail, where he bonded out hours later, per the AP.
At the time of the arrest, Coleman was already out on bond from an Oct. 30 domestic battery arrest. In that case, he allegedly pushed, hit, and spit on his 18-year-old brother in a fight that erupted because the brother was going to get baptized, according to court documents. The Kansas City, Kansas, Democrat has been embroiled in controversy since before he took office after being elected in 2020 and has acknowledged past abuses against girls and young women. A legislative committee reprimanded Coleman in writing in February over those abuses.
Last month, Coleman also was banned from the Kansas Department of Labor's offices over allegations of disruptive behavior. Coleman said he was trying to help constituents. Both Kansas House Speaker Ron Ryckman, a Republican, and Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly have joined the chorus of those calling for Coleman to resign. If he refuses to resign, Kelly said, the Legislature should remove him from office, saying his latest arrest "is further evidence that he is not fit to serve in the Kansas House of Representatives." Coleman didn't immediately return phone and email messages seeking comment.

Flyers linking Jewish community to COVID pandemic found at homes in Beverly Hills, police say
The Beverly Hills Police Department has launched an investigation into what they're calling a "hate speech incident" after propaganda-style flyers about the COVID-19 pandemic and Jewish people were found at several homes.
Police say they received a call at around 6 a.m. on Sunday from a resident who reported seeing one of the flyers on their front yard.

Witnesses Describe Still At-Large Suspect In Fatal Cypress Park Shooting As Male, 70’s, Walking With Cane
CYPRESS PARK (CBSLA) – Authorities responded to reports of a shooting in the 2600 block of Roseview Avenue Sunday, near the intersection of Cypress and Roseview Avenues.
The call came in at around 11:47 a.m. and an approximately 40-year-old male victim was discovered at the scene, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.
Officials with the Los Angeles Police Department Northeast Division said the victim was transported to County USC Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
Police also said witnesses described the suspect, who was still at-large, as a male in his 70’s who was walking with a cane.
