Marijuana startup backed by John Boehner goes public in Canada

The cannabis startup backed by former Speaker of the House John Boehner is set to become one of the most valuable companies in the US weed industry.

Acreage Holdings is the latest US cannabis firm to tap the public markets in Canada, where marijuana is legal, through a reverse takeover. The company raised $314 million in a private placement that values it at about $2.8 billion. Acreage shares are set to start public trading on Thursday.

Run by former Wall Street banker Kevin Murphy, Acreage has more has more than 40 dispensaries across the United States. In addition to Boehner, a Republican, the company also counts former conservative Canadian Primer Minister Brian Mulroney as an adviser.

Acreage’s public listing comes in the wake of the national legalization of cannabis in Canada. The federal ban in the United States has made it tricky for entrepreneurs to raise domestic capital because most banks and large institutional investors remain on the sidelines. That’s why many are turning to the Canadian stock market.

people are biting at Politico's bait (climate committee)

They are telling the story in a way that feeds the patronizing narrative about Ocasio Cortez that a lot of people are craving to hear, both Democrats and Republicans, but what is happening now is exactly what happened when Pelosi first created the committee. Except that Pallone is the chair of the ECC committee instead of Dingell.

I'd like to ask the people responding with the usual condescending comments about Ocasio Cortez, is it possible that you've just been played by Politico, their sources, and the people that don't want this committee for various reasons?

I think they want us to focus on her, don't fall for it. You don't have to agree about the committee but at least think about what is really going on:

The creation of the committee was criticized by House Republicans, who argued "that the committee was unnecessary or that its budget could be used better by the ethics committee."[4] The proposal to create the committee also encountered some skepticism from House Democrats, particularly Chairman John Dingell of the powerful Energy and Commerce Committee (which has primary jurisdiction over environmental and climate change issues) and Chairman Charles Rangel of the Ways and Means Committee (which has jurisdiction on any tax legislation aimed at affecting industry behavior).[5] Ultimately, Pelosi was able to reach a compromise with Dingell, wherein the committee was to be advisory in nature, without the legislative authority granted to standing committees.[6] Joe Barton, the ranking Republican member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, continued to object to the committee's existence, calling it a "platform for some members to grandstand."[2]
