Missouri lawmaker writes back to retired teacher: 'I don't care about your feelings'

The Kansas City Star via Yahoo News

On April 14, retired Missouri teacher Nedra Jeffress, of Independence, wrote a letter to state Rep. Chuck Basye, the Rocheport Republican who is pushing hardest to ban transgender girls from school sports.

“I’m wondering if there is data supporting the need for bills regulating this in Missouri or if this (is) a solution in search of a problem,” Jeffress wrote. “As an educator who has worked at the middle school and high school level in Missouri, I know how hard it is for transgender students to be accepted by peers, parents, churches and some teachers. If they are able to participate on an athletic team, they may find acceptance important to their well-being. I hope you would sponsor bills that support positive mental health for each citizen of the state of Missouri instead of proposing bills that attack a population already at risk. Thank you for your time,” she said in closing.

The next morning, she received this far less respectful reply:

“Nedra, Do your own research. I don’t care about your feelings nor do I care about your resume.

“Bottom line, my intent is to keep women’s/girl’s sports for the female gender.

“If a person was born with a penis, that individual doesn’t belong in sports designed solely for females.

“Now go ahead and have your meltdown and/or temper tantrum. Remember, Let’s Go Brandon!!”

Re Twitter, Elon Musk

It's downright hilarious watching right wingers convince themselves that liberals or left leaning people hate Elon Musk. I would venture to say that most liberals on Twitter are not super observers of politics like I would be. They like Elon Musk in the same way they like the Kardashians. There's always something fascinating about the rich and famous that they can't keep their eyes off of.

They seem to have somehow convince themselves that Elon Musk is a champion of the right, Trump will get his Twitter account back, and how the right will take over woke liberal Twitter. They are cheering on a guy who doesn't give a single fuck about their right wing bullshit.

Elon Musk is for Elon Musk. Elon Musk wants the world to exist according to his vision. He doesn't care about Democrats or Republicans, and these petty political squabbles between the Parties. He cares about Elon Musk. He's not buying Twitter to "own the libs." Elon Musk couldn't give any less of a shit about "owning the libs."

Elon Musk isn't buying Twiter so that Donald Trump and Marjorie Taylor Greene can get their Twitter accounts back so that they can back-to-back dunk on "the libs." Elon Musk is buying Twitter for Elon Musk's benefit.

I don't believe Elon Musk cares about who has a Twitter, and that's the issue. He just doesn't give a fuck. He doesn't care if Trump says crazy shit. He doesn't care what stupid stuff is being shared. He doesn't care about Marjorie Taylor Greene's Jewish space lasers. Elon Musk wants people to be free to be their stupid, crazy, idiotic, conspiracy theorist, paranoid, nonsensical selves on Twitter if they so choose.

He's not trying to protect their nonexistent free speech rights on Twitter or protect their right wing bullshit. However, if they want to peddle their bullshit and conspiracies, he won't stop them. He doesn't care enough to stop them. He doesn't care enough to monitor content on the site.

He's doing it because he has a wild wild west vision of how Twitter should be run and he wants to implement that vision. It's not right wing view or a left wing view. It's a selfish Elon Musk view.

In my experience, people with significant wealth who can literally do almost anything tend to think they should be above "petty" restrictions. People with wealth have that luxury of fighting restrictions or limits they don't like in a way that regular people don't (a luxury like being able to buy a company for $43 billion to fight content moderation). I don't believe his goal is not to advance some massive right wing agenda. His goal is purely selfish. Elon Musk thinks he should not be restricted or moderated in any way possible. He thinks he should be able to do anything or pursue any venture with no limits or watchdogs. That's the way he moves through the world and that's how he will likely operate Twitter. As a result, that may mean Trump getting his Twitter back and no content moderation.

Let them believe their own bullshit about how Elon Musk will turn "woke" Twitter into a conservative bastion of RWNJ voices. Let them cheer at this nothing of a "win." Elon Musk doesn't give a fuck about any of that. It's a social media platform will most likely operate largely the same as it has been before to the end user.

I avoided posting but I feel like I have to vent re: DeSantis, Disney

The only social media I have is Twitter. Admittedly, I just look. I'm not that active. I follow 5 people who are all lawyers and that's it. I have two rules:

1) Don't look at Twitter in the mornings and on the weekends
2) Never engage, just look

I broke my own rule. I went down the Twitter rabbit hole this morning. I didn't engage but I definitely looked. Republicans on Twitter are from another planet. Republicans' primary talking point regarding Disney is that "the left" is all of a sudden defending tax incentives for a large company with no acknowledgement that this is retaliatory, or this is okay and not violating any law or any core American beliefs about government power because the government of Florida is revoking a privilege and not a right.

I am a lifelong Floridian. For all my life, I couldn't imagine living anywhere else. Even though Florida needs every Democratic voter it can get, my thoughts on living here is starting to change. I have a problem with using the power of the government to retaliate against ANYONE for speaking in opposition of a political stance. That goes for any political position whether I agree with it or not. That is a bridge too far for me. If these were Democrats in charge of the Florida government passing a pro-abortion bill and then proceeding to punish Disney in the same manner for an anti-abortion stance, that would lose me as a voter.

No government or government official in the United States should engage in the business of revenge against it's own citizens and companies for taking an opposing political stance. I will not pretend that this is not retaliation with a touch of political theater. I will not pretend that this wasn't retaliation against an entity who is a stakeholder in the state of Florida solely because that entity opposed a SINGLE. FUCKING. BILL.

I understand that the state of Florida is well within its power and right to revoke any privileges and tax incentives it gives to Disney. I do not debate that. The context for doing that is important; The circumstances for doing that are important; the 'why' of it all is important.

Big business has a lot of sway in politics. Disney in Florida, Delta Air Lines and Coca-Cola in Georgia, and so on. In theory, Disney is getting these privileges for investing in Florida, providing jobs and so on. In theory, Delta is getting their tax incentives for investing in Georgia, providing jobs and so on. That can mean a lot to the people on the ground. When the state of Georgia threatened to take away Delta's tax incentives as retaliation for Delta speaking out against a voter suppression law, that was a bridge too far for me.

If the government is going to revoke the privileges that it gives to Disney, I'm sure Disney will be fine. I won't shed a tear for Disney. However, if you're going to revoke them, revoke those privileges for Disney paying their employees under the minimum wage. Revoke those privileges for abusive labor practices. Revoke them for violating safety regulations. Revoke those privileges because there is benefit to the people of Florida. Apparently, underpaying employees -who happen to be Florida voters- isn't enough for the government to revoke those privileges. A more sufficient reason for revoking those privileges is voicing opposition over a piece of vague legislation that's still looking for problem to fix.

Let's assume that the revoking this privilege as retaliation is okay because it's only a privilege that can be revoked by the government at any time. Driving is a privilege and not a right. Should I and every other Democrat expect a letter in the mail revoking their drivers license for picking a fight with Republicans or is that a bridge too far?
