Florida governor signs bill requiring felons to pay court fees and fines to be eligible to vote

Florida felons will have to pay court-ordered financial obligations if they want their voting rights restored under a bill signed by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis on Friday. The legislation requires those with felony convictions to pay court fees and fines to be eligible to vote.

Gov. DeSantis asks Fla. Supreme Court to enlist grand jury to investigate Broward school district

FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA. (WSVN) - Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has announced that he has filed a petition to form a state-wide grand jury that will investigate the Broward County school district.

DeSantis made the announcement Wednesday in Fort Lauderdale, just a day before the one-year anniversary of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

“I think it’s something that may lead to potential accountability measures by a grand jury,” DeSantis said.

The announcement followed requests from the community for DeSantis to suspend BCPS Superintendent Robert Runcie.

Runcie has faced harsh criticism since the shooting at MSD one year ago.

However, DeSantis said he did not have the authority to suspend Runcie.

One year after Parkland, Florida lawmakers renew push to arm teachers -- with help from Ron DeSantis

Lawmakers have revived the idea of arming teachers — and it is gaining support, despite continued opposition from across Florida.

This year, lawmakers have revived the idea of arming teachers — and it is gaining support. A bill expanding the existing “Guardian” program, Senate Bill 7030, passed through a key committee Tuesday, which means it could be one of the first bills the entire Florida Senate will consider once legislative session begins March 5.

“I want someone there to protect my eight grandchildren and their generation,” Sen. Dennis Baxley, R-Ocala. “They deserve to have someone ready.”

The Only Human Surprised by Brett Kavanaugh's Abortion Vote Is Susan Collins

-Snip-

Late on Thursday night, when hardly anyone was watching, Justice Brett Kavanaugh decided to conduct a covert op on whatever is left of the political reputation of Senator Susan Collins, Republican of Maine. You may recall that, when Kavanaugh's nomination was hanging fire, Collins did her Down East Hamlet act for a couple of days before announcing that she would vote for PJ's beer buddy. She explained her decision by saying that Kavanaugh had convinced her that he would respect precedent, including all those precedents that protected a woman's right to full reproductive health, including abortion.

On Thursday night, Kavanaugh proved that, at best, Susan Collins is the biggest all-day sucker in American politics today.

It's about 2020

We’ve been saying this for two years now but here we go...

Trump is a useful idiot to the Republicans. They are willing to take Trump’s impulsiveness as long as they get their legislation and their judges. This is about power. They would have an indecisive and impulsive Trump that they can trick into doing anything than a qualified Democrat that will disagree with them on everything.

The government is shutdown now because they know if Trump gets a funding bill that does not include a wall, he will sign it because they know Trump has thin skin; he doesn’t want to be blamed; he will cave to the pressure.

Everything surrounding funding the government is not about a wall (at least for Congressional Republicans). It’s about 2020. Mitch McConnell is thinking about 2020. They are thinking about how Trump can get re-elected in 2020 and how to run their own campaigns alongside Trump’s.

They know if a funding bill without the wall funding hits the Senate floor, it will pass. They know if a funding bill goes to Trump without wall funding, he will cave to pressure and sign it. They backed themselves into this corner. They, while having a majority in both chambers of Congress, chose to keep pushing the wall discussion back. If they truly wanted funding for a wall over the last two years, there was nothing stopping them.

Trump has been played by his own party and I truly don’t think he knows that he has.

Opposing Trump is making Nancy Pelosi more popular

The shutdown has begun to take its toll on President Trump’s poll numbers. The president’s approval rating in Rasmussen’s Daily Tracking Poll fell to its lowest level in nearly a year on Monday.

Nate Silver also noted the shutdown’s adverse effects on Trump’s approval rating. As he tweeted this past weekend:

Yet while Trump’s numbers are falling, Nancy Pelosi’s are rising. The first graph below shows that Pelosi’s favorability rating has increased by eight percentage points since Election Day in Civiqs’s tracking polls.

Texas landowners prepare wall fight; Trump to visit border

HIDALGO, Texas (AP) — As President Donald Trump travels to the border in Texas to make the case for his $5.7 billion wall, landowner Eloisa Cavazos says she knows firsthand how the project will play out if the White House gets its way.

The federal government has started surveying land along the border in Texas and announced plans to start construction next month. Rather than surrender their land, some property owners are digging in, vowing to reject buyout offers and preparing to fight the administration in court.

“You could give me a trillion dollars and I wouldn’t take it,” said Cavazos, whose land sits along the Rio Grande, the river separating the U.S. and Mexico in Texas. “It’s not about money.”
