I just have to get this off my chest.

I've been talking with friends regarding the upcoming election.

"Progressive" voters settling for Biden has been shoved in my face all day along with things like "Obama didn't do anything and he ran on a progressive agenda" and "Obama bailed out the banks" and "Biden is a corporate Democrat" and so on but I'll take him.

I appreciate the vote! I'll take it! But my counter to this "corporate Democrat" narrative is that in order for a president to do progressive things, that certain president would need a more progressive congress. A president, although a powerful person, is not all powerful. Obama couldn't do much because he had a mountain of opposition against him. In order for a president to be as effective as you would like a president to be, that president needs back up. That president needs continued support. What often happens is that people go out and vote during the presidential election and don't come out to vote until the next presidential election. They skip all the other elections which are just as important. It took the nuclear bomb that is Trump for people to realize the importance of off-year elections, and to increase turnout for local elections and the midterm. Once the president you want is in office, the work doesn't stop. You need to elect people in congress (and other offices) who also have that vision.

Obama was a progressive-minded president with a not-so-progessive congress. The only thing that could pass the congress of the time was a bank bailout (and a few other things but I'm keeping it simple). There was nothing Obama could have done to get universal healthcare passed, free college, UBI or anything else on the progressive menu.

If you really want progress, run progressive candidates in congress, in governorships, and local elections... and win! Assemble the Avengers!

Joe Biden is running a pretty progressive agenda. He's not the most progressive candidate in the world but maybe if you give him a progressive congress, he'll at least have a shot to come around to your idea of progressivism.

To my fellow Florida DUers, Amendment 1 is bullshit

To summarize, Amendment 1 proposes:

The Florida Constitution currently says, "Every citizen of the United States who is at least eighteen years of age and who is a permanent resident of the state, if registered as provided by law, shall be an elector of the county where registered."

Under the ballot measure, the Florida Constitution would say, "Only a citizen of the United States who is at least eighteen years of age and who is a permanent resident of the state, if registered as provided by law, shall be an elector of the county where registered."


This amendment... is bullshit. It's a useless amendment. It is a waste of people's time and energy. This amendment does nothing but feed into the right wing conspiracy theory there is wide spread voter fraud from undocumented immigrants.

I live in Florida. In 2018, we lost the governor's race and a senate seat.... barely. However, a loss is a loss. Rick Scott won the senate race and Ron DeSantis won the governorship by a few thousand votes out of over 8 million votes. Half the state disagree with these fuckers and yet they don't moderate their positions.

Once these people are in positions of power, they're in. There's no way to "punish" or remove them for completely disregarding HALF THE FUCKING STATE until there is a new election.

In 2016, in-person voter fraud was a problem. There were 3 million illegal votes when we had in person voting.

Now, mail-in voting is a problem.

So what kind of voting are they okay with?

Mail-in voting will be wild with voter fraud and the one way that can be done to verify a mail-in a ballot, they don’t wanna do that.

WTF: Voting on SCOTUS nominee in an election year was not our position!

I've been reading a lot of op-eds and basically says "sure, Republicans are being hypocrites but so are Democrats." They basically lay out that Dems are hypocrites because Dems wanted to have a vote on a SCOTUS nominee in an election year but now Dems don't. Dems are breaking with that position.

EXCUSE THE FUCK OUT OF ME? Our position was that the President nominated a reasonably qualified nominee and that nominee deserves a vote because there is a vacancy on the court and he's qualified, not because it's an election year. Give the guy a vote. If you don't like him, vote not to confirm. The GOP had the majority. They could have done that. But at least he gets a vote! The nominee himself was a compromise. Merrick Garland was picked specifically because Republicans suggested him because he was a moderate. I'm sure Barack Obama would have nominated someone that he thought was more liberal if he thought he could get him/her confirmed.

What Republicans did to Merrick Garland's nomination was disgusting! It was pure fuckery! Once upon a time, I considered certain Republican ideas. What they did with Merrick Garland is the reason the GOP lost me FOREVER! I stopped thinking anyone of them were reasonable. They block Merrick Garland's nomination not because of Merrick Garland but because Merrick Garland had the unfortunate luck (and greatest honor) of being chosen by Barack Obama. Despite what Lindsey Graham might think, what they did to Judge Garland's nomination was far worse than what Dems did to Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation [where was that energy during Merrick Garland's nomination!].
