Rosalynn Carter: Iowans, ask 2020 candidates for their agenda on family caregiving

For Jimmy and me, Iowa holds a special place in our hearts. During his presidential campaign. I spent over 100 days in Iowa. I visited 105 communities and knocked on more doors and met more Iowans than anyone thought possible. You are some of the most welcoming, warm, informed people we have ever met. Our conversations covered everything from Jimmy’s favorite fish recipe to the rapid increase in the price of fertilizer to our national security.

I especially remember the strong show of support you gave us. You truly are patriotic Americans who believe in doing what is best for our country.

As you prepare to interview and evaluate the next set of presidential candidates, I ask you to help me shine a spotlight on the more than 40 million Americans and over 300,000 Iowans who are family caregivers.

You may not be one, but you most certainly know one. Caregivers are the selfless people who provide unpaid care for loved ones who are ill or have serious medical conditions. This is among the most challenging work there is.

Being a caregiver requires infinite patience, physical and emotional strength, health care navigation skills, and a sense of humor — which can be hard to come by after sleepless nights and demanding days.

It is a reality for millions of Americans, including me.

I have cared for loved ones nearly all my life, so when I look in the mirror, I see a caregiver looking back at me. It began when I was 12 years old and my father became ill. Taking care of him took a toll on our entire family, my mother most of all.

It is safe to say that many of you reading this also see a caregiver in the mirror. You probably also see many around you without recognizing them, because caregivers are not necessarily who we all assume them to be. They are split almost evenly between men and women, and fully one quarter are millennials. They can be looking after a parent with dementia, a spouse injured in combat, or a child with developmental challenges. Or they can even be caring for all three.

Caregivers are sons and daughters, spouses, brothers and sisters, friends, veterans and civilians, and countless others. They are members of all our communities.

And they need our support. While they are focusing intently on their loved ones, their own health and well-being are impacted by long-term caregiving. Caregivers suffer from chronic conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and arthritis at nearly twice the rate of the overall population. They also have increased occurrences of ailments like acid reflux and headaches, an increased tendency to develop serious illness, and high levels of obesity and bodily pain.

Nor are the effects just physical. These helpers are watching a loved one suffer and, in many cases, die. They are exhausted, heartbroken, lonely, scared, and grieving — all while putting others’ needs ahead of their own.

The impacts don’t end there. With 60 percent of family caregivers juggling work and caregiving responsibilities simultaneously, caregiving has costs for workers and employers alike.

The estimated economic value of family and friend caregiving is roughly $500 billion per year — three times greater than Medicaid’s expenditures on professional long-term care.

It’s easy to see that this issue needs to be a national priority. We must look at this community that is growing exponentially, especially as our population ages, and needs to be recognized.

This is where all of you can help. I have sent a letter to all major candidates from both parties who have declared that they are running for president asking them to commit to a national agenda on caregiving as well as to make it a topic of their campaigns.

Soon these folks will be asking for your vote at the state fair and at church or knocking on your door — just as Jimmy and I did over 40 years ago.

Please ask them about this issue. The population of caregivers is 40 million — about the same number of people with student loan debt. We talk about student loans; shouldn’t we be talking about this?

Since caregivers are often overextended as well as selfless, they need us to speak up for them.

Because as I’ve been saying for the last six decades, there are only four kinds of people in the world: those who have been caregivers, those who currently are caregivers, those who will be caregivers, and those who will need caregivers.

If Elected President, Bernie Sanders Promises to Tell Us About Aliens

That's something I could vote for

Vermont Senator and Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders said that if he becomes president and learns about aliens, he’ll announce it on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast.

Sanders spent an hour talking to Rogan Tuesday about his platform for president—universal health care, student loan forgiveness, taking on the billionaire class. But at the end of the show, Rogan asked Sanders if the US government would Come Clean about aliens if elected president:

Rogan: “If you got into the office and you found out something about aliens, if you found out something about UFOs, would you let us know?”
Sanders: “Well I tell you, my wife would demand I let you know.”
Rogan: “Is your wife a UFO nut?”
Sanders: “No, she’s not a UFO nut. She goes, Bernie, ‘What is going on do you know? Do you have any access?’"
Rogan: “You don’t have any access? You’ll let us know though?”
Sanders: “Alright, we’ll announce it on the show. How’s that?”

Jimmy Carter promised this when he was running after the press got hold of a UFO sighting report he filed years before. But the CIA blocked him unfortunately.

Biden called McCain before the Senate voted on repealing Obamacare urging him to vote No (2017)

Former Vice President Joe Biden reportedly called Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) ahead of Friday's vote on Senate Republicans' healthcare bill, asking that he oppose the legislation.

According to a report by The Washington Post, McCain was called by both Biden and former Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) ahead of the vote, both pleading with McCain to oppose the "skinny' repeal.

Lieberman supported voting for ObamaCare while a senator, and reportedly explained that continued support to McCain during his call.

The Post reported that Biden had a more emotional discussion with McCain, reflecting on his son Beau Biden's death to the same brain cancer McCain was diagnosed with earlier this month. Biden's son died in 2015, two years after his initial diagnosis.

Maybe Senator McCain planned to vote No anyway but even if Vice President Biden picking up the phone helped affirm it and save millions of people their healthcare, then I am very grateful. Whatever health care plan you want your next Democratic president to pursue, always remember the Trump-Pence-McConnell cronies want to take away what you already have.

"Vice President Biden..." "Mr Vice President..."

Those candidates, especially Harris and De Blasio, made a stupid plan namechecking him at every turn.

These debates are not really worthwhile. Yang expressed that perfectly at the end. Everyone is time limited to give their prepared lines and if you don't hurry you'll be cut short.

So constantly bringing it back to Biden, trying to jab at him and make a name for yourself backfired.

Every time they went after him his hand shot up letting the moderators know they can't move on without giving him the right of reply. Every time they did that was one more chance for Biden to speak. One less chance for someone else.

Tell me what you're for, not who you're against in the Democratic debate.

Ronald Reagan's racist phone call to Richard Nixon released

The day after the United Nations voted to recognize the People’s Republic of China, then–California Governor Ronald Reagan phoned President Richard Nixon at the White House and vented his frustration at the delegates who had sided against the United States. “Last night, I tell you, to watch that thing on television as I did,” Reagan said. “Yeah,” Nixon interjected. Reagan forged ahead with his complaint: “To see those, those monkeys from those African countries—damn them, they’re still uncomfortable wearing shoes!” Nixon gave a huge laugh.

Who is Gillibrand talking about?

“We have Democratic candidates running for president right now who do not believe necessarily that it’s a good idea that women work outside the home,” she said emphatically before a women’s labor event in Iowa City, Iowa. “No joke.”

Ms. Gillibrand did not name names, and her campaign would not say whom she was referring to.

I predict the July 31st debate will be Anyone But Biden

He's going to be in between Booker and Harris who have taken several aims at him. And from my recollection only Yang and Gabbard in this group haven't made a political/policy hit on him yet.

And for several of the candidates across both nights the prospect of dropping out is coming closer so this might be last chance saloon to try and make some gains in the polls.

He has to be ready to respond.

2016 was never about economic anxiety

The antics last night confirm it, if you didn't already know.

The idea that Trump got in the White House because Hillary and the Democrats represented a staus quo that sold out Middle America behind is false. Trump got in because he and the Republicans represent a return to the era of fewer rights for people who don't look like them. The era of open and proud racism, bigotry and hatred.

If economic anxiety was real then bigotry shouldn't be on the rise. Afterall, Trump boasts about "the best economy". If economic anxiety were real his supporters should be kissing their wallets and shutting up. Instead bigotry is on the rise. Because economic anxiety of Trump supporters is a myth.

I want to see Mayor Pete debate Pence

I think that would be glorious. This country is plagued by a small minority of evangelicals who hide their racism, sexism, hatred and bigotry under the shelter of the Bible. Something has to give and Pete will call out the fake Christian for what he is to his face in front of millions.
