New AZ poll: Lake leads Hobbs 54 to 43 and Kelly leads Masters 45 to 43

PHOENIX - A new FOX 10 InsiderAdvantage poll shows the race for Governor - widening a bit. But the race for U.S. Senate is turning into a dead heat. With less than 2 weeks to go before the November election, Republican Kari Lake leads Democrat Katie Hobbs by 11 percentage points. Only about 2% of voters are undecided.

Pollster Matt Towery believes that Hobbs' reluctance to debate Lake may be a reason why the gap has widened in recent weeks. According to InsiderAdvantage, Lake is polling higher among older adults and Hispanics.



Senate race

The U.S. Senate race, between incumbent Democrat Mark Kelly and Republican Blake Masters is much closer. Kelly leads Masters by 2 percentage points. Libertarian, Marc Victor, is at 6%, with 6% still undecided.



Methodology

This latest InsiderAdvantage poll was conducted Oct. 24-25 over cell phone, landline and text. It included 550 likely voters, with a margin of error of 4.2%.

Brazil's right wing is pushing a law to criminalize polls that turn out wrong

Brazil’s House of Representatives, in which President Jair Bolsonaro’s Liberal party holds the largest number of seats, has fast-tracked legislation that will criminalize publishing polls whose figures differ markedly from final election results. The House is expected to vote and pass the bill, although it is not expected to pass in the Senate, where Bolsonaro’s opponents hold a majority.

A majority of polls published in the lead-up to the first round of Brazil's presidential elections on Oct. 2 showed challenger Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva having a larger lead over Bolsonaro than the final results that were ultimately tallied.

Lula won the first round with 48% of the vote to Bolsonaro’s 43%, whereas Americas Society’s final poll of polls before the vote showed Lula leading by more than 8%. Bolsonaro and his allies have since criticized polls, part of an array of moves to discredit the elections. The second round of the presidential election will take place on Oct. 30.

To combat a surge of online disinformation around the election, Brazilian authorities have granted the head of the electoral body unilateral powers to order tech companies to withdraw posts that are deemed to be false. The move has, however, raised alarm bells among civil-rights experts worried about concentrating so much power in a single individual.

Leading lawyers have sounded the alarm over Jacob Rees-Mogg’s proposals for post-Brexit legislation that could result in 2,400 laws disappearing overnight – including a ban on animal testing for cosmetics, workers’ rights and environmental protections. Lawyers including one former UK government legal official who designed the concept of EU-retained law for Theresa May branded the move as “anti-democratic” and “completely barking”.

Swathes of laws including equal pay for men and women, pension rights for same-sex married couples, food standards and aviation safety rules could accidentally disappear or be redrafted poorly, they warn. The retained EU law (revocation and reform) bill will get its second reading on Tuesday. It was designed in such a way that 47 years of laws devised during EU membership will be switched off on 31 December 2023 under a so-called sunset clause.

“A lot of laws are going to be changed without any scrutiny at all by a dying government that few people respect,” said George Peretz KC, a specialist in European law. The Unison general secretary, Christina McAnea, said: “This is a countdown to disaster for all working people. It ​would mean turning the clock back to Dickensian ​times when workers had no rights.

“In a financial crisis with a headless government, people need stability and support, not a bonfire of numerous employment rights. “Ministers must act now to reassure everyone that hard-won ​protection won’t be shredded. A free-for-all ​giving the green light to unscrupulous bosses ​is not the ​route to economic growth. “All of this is deeply objectionable on two grounds – it is anti-democratic and it is anti-growth,” said Peretz, pointing out that employers need legal certainty on employment laws, technical standards and other matters before expanding or investing.
