The Supreme Court Just Said That Evidence of Innocence Is Not Enough

The same court that appears poised to overturn Roe v. Wade in order to protect innocents before they are born seems to lose interest when it comes to innocents later in life.

https://www.thedailybeast.com/the-supreme-court-just-said-in-in-shinn-v-ramirez-that-evidence-of-innocence-is-not-enough

Last December, the Supreme Court gathered to hear oral arguments in Shinn v. Ramirez, a case that could mean life or death for Barry Jones, who sits on death row in Arizona for the rape and murder of his girlfriend’s 4-year-old daughter, Rachel.

In 2018, a federal court overturned Jones’ conviction, concluding that he had failed to receive effective counsel, a violation of his Sixth Amendment rights. Had that happened, a federal judge ruled, “there is a reasonable probability that his jury would not have convicted him of any of the crimes with which he was charged and previously convicted.”

After losing in the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, Arizona’s attorney general appealed the decision to the Supreme Court. During those oral arguments, state prosecutors repeatedly argued that “innocence isn’t enough” of a reason to throw out Jones’ conviction.

On Monday morning, by a 6-3 vote, the Supreme Court concurred: Barry Jones’ innocence is not enough to keep him off of death row. The state of Arizona can still kill Jones, even if there exists a preponderance of evidence that he committed no crime.

'I Was Just 16': Pastor's 'Adultery' Confession in Church Goes Off the Rails

Prosecutors in Indiana are now investigating after a woman took the stage to confront the pastor. “The lies and the manipulation have to stop,” she told him.

https://www.thedailybeast.com/pastor-john-lowes-adultery-confession-in-warsaw-indiana-church-goes-sideways-victim-says-i-was-just-16

A church pastor in Indiana publicly confessed to his congregation this week that he’d committed “adultery” two decades ago—but he was quickly called out by a woman who took the stage to say she had only been 16 when he preyed on her. The public confrontation that played out Sunday at the New Life Christian Church and World Outreach in Warsaw has now sparked an investigation by local prosecutors in Kosciusko County, according to local reports.

Video of the incident shot by an attendee quickly went viral on Facebook, where commentators applauded the woman for coming forward. The footage shows the pastor, John Lowe II, announce his resignation from the stage after he revealed that he had “committed adultery.” “It was nearly 20 years ago. It continued far too long. It involved one person, and there’s been no other, nor any other situations of unbecoming conduct for the last 20 years,” Lowe told parishioners.

As soon as he walked off the stage, a man and a woman walked up and grabbed the microphone to drop a bombshell. “For 27 years, I lived in a prison … prison of lies, lying to protect the Lowe family. For years, I thought I was a horrible person, having suicidal thoughts, not realizing what had truly been done to me,” the woman, identified only as Bobbi, said.

“I would still be in a prison if my brother... had not approached me just two weeks ago with what he had seen as a teenager that bothered him all these years: his pastor in bed with his younger sister, a T-shirt and underwear on,” she told the shocked crowd. “The lies and the manipulation have to stop. I was a prisoner and you kept me in your prison. I’m a prisoner no longer. I was just 16 when you took my virginity on your office floor. Do you remember that?” “You did things to my teenage body that had never, and should have never, been done,” she told Lowe directly, adding, “you are not the victim here.”

Gutless Corporate Caving To Christofascism: State Farm Drops LGBTQ Kids Books Program After Backlash

https://www.thedailybeast.com/state-farm-drops-lgbtq-kids-books-program-after-backlash

Insurance company State Farm has dropped its support for a program providing LGBTQ-theme children’s books to teachers and libraries after a right-wing uproar.

“State Farm’s support of a philanthropic program, GenderCool, has been the subject of news and customer inquiries. This program that included books about gender identity was intended to promote inclusivity,” Victor Terry, State Farm’s chief diversity officer, wrote in an email to staff.

“We will no longer support that program,” he said, adding that “conversations about gender and identity should happen at home with parents.” The decision came after a whistleblower report Monday about the company “targeting” children as young as 5 with books about gender identity sparked backlash on the right.

The program, which would see agents and staffers distribute books to community centers, libraries, and teachers, aimed to “increase representation of LGBTQ+ books and support our communities in having challenging, important and empowering conversations with children age 5+,” the insurance company said of the project in a January 2022 email obtained by Consumer Research.

Yes, Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W-Va.) is still saying he wants to pass a party-line package that would

raise taxes on the wealthy, reduce the deficit, lower prescription drug prices and address energy and climate policies. And yes, that would give many vulnerable Democrats a strong rebuttal to Republican attacks on the economy.

Cucumbers are having a moment right now. TikTok, for one, can’t get over the way in which Kendall Jenner slices them. Perhaps to compensate, users are dishing out the most innovative cucumber recipes, smashing them, turning them into caterpillar-like accordions, and even pickling them in Sprite.

It’s easy to understand why this water-filled vegetable reaches its peak in the warmer months. Cucumbers are hydrating, crunchy, and as absorbent as a sponge, making them excellent vessels for marinades. Plus, they’re best when they’re cold. So make these recipes, toss them into Tupperware, and enjoy at your next summer outing.

Watermelon and feta salad with dried mint

Kari Heron, the blogger behind Chef and Steward, was first introduced to this recipe when she moved to Dubai. “Over the many years I lived there, I developed a strong affinity for feta and mint, which are heavily featured in Levant cuisine,” she says. “The Western mind cannot easily comprehend the combination, but trust me your taste buds will thank you for it.”

For this recipe, you’ll need watermelon, cucumbers, and feta cheese. The dressing is a simple lemon-olive oil combo, with both dried and fresh mint for a greater depth of flavor. “Because watermelon is lower in carbs, it is also a great way to satisfy a sweeter craving while watching sugar consumption,” Heron explains. “Pairing the fruit with the protein-rich feta and good quality extra virgin olive oil slows down the release of sugars into the bloodstream.”

Feilden Fowles completes timber-framed dining hall at University of Cambridge

https://www.dezeen.com/2022/05/23/feilden-fowles-tile-clad-homerton-college-dining-hall-cambridge/

London architecture studio Feilden Fowles has completed a timber-framed dining hall at the University of Cambridge's Homerton College with a faience-tiled volume set above a pigmented-concrete colonnade. Designed to reference the adjacent arts and crafts-style Ibberson Building and the college's Victorian Gothic Revival buildings, the dining hall contains the main eating space along with a smaller room for eating called a buttery, kitchens and staff amenities.

The London-based studio, led by Fergus Feilden and Edmund Fowles, designed the building to replace the previous dining hall and dark, cramped and outdated kitchen facilities at Cambridge's youngest college. The college moved to the site in 1894 from its original home in east London and occupies several buildings that were constructed in the 1870s for Cavendish College.

"The design of the hall is symbolic of Homerton's progressive character and bold ambitions, yet simultaneously in conversation with the rich architectural heritage of Cambridge," said Feilden Fowles director, Edmund Fowles. "There are echoes of the marching buttresses of King's College Chapel, references to the Victorian Gothic Revival of Homerton's Cavendish College buildings, and motifs of the neighbouring arts and crafts Ibberson Building," he added. "They combine as a marker of today's architectural thinking, an embodiment of low-tech principles, an arts and crafts of the 21st century."

The building is designed as a social fulcrum for the college campus, with a series of courtyards and cloisters around its perimeter creating informal spaces for meetings and chance encounters. The ground floor plinth is constructed from pigmented concrete with columns set out on a three-metre grid that lends a rational and ordered appearance to the elevations.

The Royal Mint releases rainbow 50p to mark 50th anniversary of Pride UK

https://www.dezeen.com/2022/05/20/royal-mint-rainbow-50p-coin-pride-anniversary/

The British Royal Mint has partnered with not-for-profit organisation Pride in London to commemorate 50 years of the LGBT+ movement Pride with a 50p coin designed by Dominique Holmes. Designed by British artist and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT+) activist Holmes, the honorary coin features the words protest, visibility, unity and equality in capital letters on colourful rainbows.

The word pride is embossed in capital letters in the middle of the coin underneath an engraved heart and swirling lines, referencing the movement that celebrates and campaigns for the rights of the LGBT+ community. "My aim with this design was to evoke images of the original Pride marches – the hand-made placards and protest signs calling out the demands of the brave LGBT+ people who were taking to the streets to fight for their rights," Holmes told Dezeen.

The seven-sided coin's eye-catching rainbows are coloured in the same hues as seen on the Rainbow Flag, which was designed by artist Gilbert Baker in 1978 and is widely recognised as the symbol of LGBT+ communities. On the bottom of the coin, which will not be circulated as currency, is an arrow coloured in shades of black, brown, pink, light blue and white stripes.

These colours were added to the Rainbow Flag by graphic designer Daniel Quasar to represent LGBT+ individuals of colour and transgender individuals, in an effort to emphasise "inclusion and progression". Quasar's Progress Pride Flag has since become routinely used around the world.
