Raphael Warnock and Herschel Walker Are Neck-and-Neck in New Georgia Poll

GOP Senate nominee Herschel Walker has been plagued by scandals but still maintains a small lead over Sen. Raphael Warnock, according to a newly released poll.

https://www.thedailybeast.com/raphael-warnock-and-herschel-walker-are-neck-and-neck-in-new-georgia-poll

Georgia is already a hotbed of political spending as Democrats try to maintain their momentum in the state—and a new poll shows the race between former NFL player Herschel Walker (R) and incumbent Sen. Raphael Warnock (D) is neck-and-neck. A survey by Data for Progress conducted between July 1 and July 6, exclusively shared with The Daily Beast, shows Walker narrowly leading Warnock by 49 percent to 47 percent. Both candidates fell into negative favorability ratings, as Walker received a -3 favorability while Warnock received a -7.

The Georgia Senate seat is one of Democrats’ top priorities this year as they hope to maintain power in Congress’s upper chamber. But with the party forecast to face massive headwinds during the midterm elections while President Joe Biden’s favorability continues to spiral, Democrats in Georgia, like many other states, could be facing an uphill battle.

But there have been glimmers of hope for Warnock’s re-election bid. Walker has been plagued by scandals, most recently reports by The Daily Beast that he has at least three children he’d kept secret from the public, despite speaking against absentee fathers throughout the campaign. And other polls have shown Warnock and Walker as tied, while another had Warnock leading by 10 points.

Though the latest poll shows Warnock down from those previous numbers, Data for Progress founder Sean McElwee told The Daily Beast he sees it as “a more accurate reading of the race,” noting their research shows Republicans are invested in economic issues this cycle while Democrats continue to focus on party values.

Roy Moore Loses $95M Lawsuit Against Sacha Baron Cohen for 'Pedophile Detector' Bit

https://www.thedailybeast.com/roy-moore-loses-dollar95m-lawsuit-against-sacha-baron-cohen-for-pedophile-detector-bit

Failed Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore was defeated in his lawsuit brought against comedian Sacha Baron Cohen on Thursday.

The former Alabama judge was seeking $95 million in a defamation suit after he said he was tricked into appearing on the Borat actor’s show Who Is America? in which a “pedophile detector” beeped whenever it went near him.

The Second U.S. Court of Appeals in Manhattan upheld an earlier ruling in favor of Baron Cohen, pointing out that Moore had signed an agreement that prevented any legal claims over his appearance on the show.

Judges also ruled that it was “clearly comedy” when the detector went off when it was near him, and that viewers wouldn’t think the comic was making a factual allegation against him. The bit riffed on real-world allegations of sexual misconduct made against Moore during his 2017 race to represent Alabama in the Senate.

Pariah - Caterpillar EP [VOAM009] Pariah returns with one of the summer's most jaw-dropping dance

floor hits.

https://ra.co/reviews/34948

It's difficult to remember the last time Pariah made straightforward dance music on his own. As Karenn (his duo with Blawan), he puts out trance-tinged techno but his last solo record was his ambient-ish debut album from 2018, Here from Where We Are. Caterpillar is the first time he's put out a traditional dance music record since 2012, and with one massive track already played out by renowned DJs, it feels like a throwback to that era's endless creativity and gleeful hype.

Released on Voam, the weirdo techno label he runs with Blawan, Caterpillar covers a lot of territory in three tracks. It falls broadly under the techno umbrella, but each cut has its own distinct personality and mood. The standout is the already-rinsed title track—if you've been out over the past two months, you've probably heard it somewhere. "Caterpillar" is a heater that chugs on for seven minutes, with modular psychedelia and sharp analogue stabs carrying us along. Its defining core, though, is the unbelievably massive bassline and square-wave squelchiness that brings to mind sandworms from the Dune ecosystem rather than a caterpillar. It's a prime cut for breaking open a techno set or hitting the gas on an open-ended mix.

"Frogspawn" is something else entirely: springy, upbeat with a playful, flute-like melody that keeps it bubbly, and just the subtlest note of hyperpop. Turning left once again, "One On One" is a speedy electro number with sensual vocals and glitchy modulations with a whiff of Detroit.

All three tracks feel like they're revisiting an earlier time, particularly the early '00s. There’s a sense of going back to basics, but also a distinctly new feeling, perhaps even a sense of reinvention. The EP offers classic sounds with a twist—and Pariah too, is showing us a side of his sound that we haven’t heard in a while. Caterpillar was well worth the wait.

Trust in institutions continues to fall in EU, despite declining unemployment and phasing out of

pandemic restrictions

Recorded trust in institutions such as national governments, the EU, the police and news media has declined across the EU over the past two years, with those who previously expressed higher trust levels, such as those in financially secure positions, now becoming less trusting. Declines in trust are being driven, in part, by the spread of misinformation on social media, and take place in the context of high levels of inflation, rising energy costs and increasingly difficult economic circumstances. These are among the findings of the fifth round of Eurofound’s Living, working and COVID-19 e-survey, with the factsheet of initial results Living in a new era of uncertainty published yesterday. The results, presenting an overview of responses from over 200,000 people across the five rounds, look at well-being, health and safety, work and telework, trust, work–life balance and the financial situation of people in Europe.

Social media, with its higher concentration of unverified news content and louder, less nuanced perspectives has a role to play in declining trust. When social media is the preferred news source trust plummets. The survey shows that on a scale from 1-10, the average trust level for respondents who use social media as their preferred news source is 3, which is much lower than when respondents use traditional media as their preferred news source (4.2). One of Europe’s biggest challenges will be to combat the spread of misinformation to avoid undermining the stability of governments. This decline in trust has taken place in the context of an upswing in economic activity with decreasing restrictions and declining unemployment, to a rate where it is below pre-pandemic levels. The economic and social consequences of the war in Ukraine - which 76% of respondents expressed high or very high concern about - rising inflation, and increased rates of energy poverty will further test trust in institutions throughout Europe in the months ahead.

The survey reveals mounting financial burdens to individuals and families in the EU. 28% of respondents report living in a household with difficulties making ends meet and being in arrears with their utility bills, while 45% of this group are worried, they will not be able to pay their utility bills over the next three months. The restrictions of the pandemic and unprecedented burdens on healthcare systems are also reflected in unmet mental health care – particularly for women, with almost a quarter (24%) reporting unmet mental care. Although there have been some improvements in reported mental well-being compared with Spring 2021, these have not been to a level that might have been expected, alluding to an enduring mental health burden from the pandemic.

Speaking on the publishing of the factsheet, Eurofound Senior Research Manager Daphne Ahrendt said ‘These findings reveal a new era of uncertainty for Europe, and we must bear in mind that declining trust has occurred during a period of relative economic recovery and declining unemployment. Europe is likely to face mounting economic and political challenges in the months ahead. This research should act as an urgent call to action to work to improve trust, engage with citizens that feel marginalised, and cover the basic needs of those feeling the pressures of inflation and societal change.’

Putin World's Lovefest With 'Beaut' Trump Gets Cringier Than Ever

Just when you thought Russia’s love affair with the former U.S. president could not get any more nauseating.

https://www.thedailybeast.com/russian-state-medias-lovefest-with-donald-trump-gets-cringier-than-ever

Russia is starting to feel the sting of Western sanctions, with state media shows featuring multiple experts who talk of “rebuilding” or “re-starting” the country’s economy. They urge everyday Russians not to delude themselves into thinking that the pre-war life would return to normal for years or decades to come. The only bright spot on the Kremlin propagandists’ horizon is the potential return of Donald J. Trump.

Following years of doubt and fears that Trump would face criminal repercussions for his unwillingness to accept defeat in presidential elections, Russian experts are now firmly convinced that their favourite candidate will come through unscathed—despite being “lynched,” as they put it, by the January 6 Committee. Appearing on Tuesday’s broadcast of The Evening With Vladimir Solovyov, Americanist Dmitry Drobnitsky noted: “Despite [Trump’s] looks and various criticisms of him, he is the most acceptable politician in today’s world—as well as a couple of Republicans.”

During Wednesday’s live broadcast The Evening With Vladimir Solovyov, host Vladimir Solovyov—who recently spent time in meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin—detailed the only semi-plausible scenario of Moscow eventually escaping consequences for invading Ukraine. Solovyov said, “I liked it a lot when the White House said, “We have no opportunity to talk. Throw us a pass so that we’ll want to talk to you.” And we say, “We don’t want to. Maybe you want to talk, but we don’t. We don’t want to take any steps towards you. We’ll wait for Trump.”

Russia’s preference for the twice-impeached former president is firmly founded on his words and actions: praising the annexation of Crimea as “very smart,” demanding political dirt in exchange for supplying weapons for Ukraine’s self-defence from its aggressive neighbor and expressing admiration for Putin’s “genius” plan to re-create some version of the Soviet Union. Solovyov gushed: “Trump is a beaut. I’m deeply convinced that if there was Trump, there wouldn’t be a February 24 [the day Russian Armed Forces invaded Ukraine].”

How Donald Trump Is Already Running for President

He may not have officially announced yet, but make no mistake: Donald's money machine is in mid-campaign form.

https://www.thedailybeast.com/how-donald-trump-is-already-running-for-president

Many things might stand in the way of ex-President Donald Trump announcing his 2024 candidacy early, but money isn’t one of them. The most recently available public data shows that Trump sits on at least $113 million. To put that in perspective, that’s more than the Republican National Committee ($41 million), the Democratic National Committee ($55 million), and President Joe Biden’s authorized committees (total $7.2 million) — all combined. Trump’s current stash is likely much larger, as we’ll explain, but a complete picture won’t emerge until the next round of campaign filings come in later this month.

For a former president, Trump’s fundraising operation has been unprecedented in modern memory. As will be his all but inevitable plunge back into the pool, the third consecutive run for an elected president. But that operation must work within regulatory constraints, and by forcing the issue early, Trump risks repeating a mistake he made in 2020—tapping donors dry just as the race hits the home stretch.

The full Trump money apparatus is so large and incestuous that his own team can’t seem to make sense of it, as Pay Dirt reported last month. But at the center of that labyrinth are three main committees, which Trump’s fundraisers configured to give the former president maximum control over a huge stream of the Republican Party’s cash flow.

That overhaul wasn’t just about money—it may have been partly responsible for salvaging Trump’s standing within the GOP. The operation kicked in just weeks after Trump left office, while the GOP was trying to gather itself after the tumult of Jan. 6 and impeachment, and many party leaders were quietly looking elsewhere for leadership. But Trump’s quick financial moves gave him some leverage over the party that he desperately needed at the time.

The Unequal Pandemic: COVID-19 and Health Inequalities

https://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/51451

It has been claimed that we are ‘all in it together’ and that the COVID-19 virus ‘does not discriminate’. This accessible, yet authoritative book dispels this myth of COVID-19 as an ‘equal opportunity’ disease, by showing how the pandemic is a syndemic of disease and inequality. Drawing on international data and accounts, it argues that the pandemic is unequal in three ways: it has killed unequally, been experienced unequally and will impoverish unequally. These inequalities are a political choice: with governments effectively choosing who lives and who dies, we need to learn from COVID-19 quickly to prevent growing inequality and to reduce health inequalities in the future. COVID-19 is an unequal pandemic.

The Best Airbnbs in Costa Rica, from Luxe Treehouses to Refurbished Airplanes

This is jungle living at its absolute best.

https://www.thrillist.com/shopping/nation/best-airbnbs-costa-rica

If you’re a fan of outdoor adventures, Costa Rica needs to move to the top of your travel list. The country is a tad smaller than West Virginia, but it contains cloud forests, jungles, volcanoes, and some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. It also happens to have some seriously cool vacation rentals. Whether you want to sleep near the water or up in the trees, Airbnb has a listing to fit the bill. Here, we’ve rounded up some of the absolute best (and most unique) Airbnbs in Costa Rica—get ready to bookmark ‘em all.

Modern villa surrounded by the jungle

Uvita, Costa Rica

6 guests/$668 per night

Tucked away in the misty mountains with views of the ocean, this three-bedroom villa is the ultimate getaway for anyone looking to disconnect. The common areas feature a gorgeous indoor-outdoor design, with an infinity pool and tons of terraces for even more immersion in nature. When it’s time to wind down, the bathrooms and bedrooms look like they were transplanted from a 5-star hotel. What guests say: “Speechless from the moment I first walked in! Such an amazing stay! The pictures are what you see is what you get. AC works like a charm and kept the room nice and cool.”

Luxurious treehouse with ocean views

Santa Teresa, Costa Rica

2 guests/$227 per night

Costa Rica has no shortage of treehouse rentals, but we love this one for its walls of windows, ocean and jungle views, and eco-friendliness. The listing features a king-size bedroom, living room, fully stocked kitchen, and spacious deck with a plunge pool—and those aforementioned views. What guests say: “We loved our stay at the Green House. The place feels like a treehouse and we enjoyed hanging out in the plunge pool after a full day of activities. Our host took great care of us and was available 24/7 to answer questions.”

Glamping pod up in the treetops

Uvita, Costa Rica

2 guests/$170 per night

These glamping pods are like high-end bird’s nests—if nests came with spas, pools, and fitness centers, that is. Those amenities are shared amongst the four units, but you can always find privacy in your open-air bedroom when the time comes. You’ll probably be too distracted by the jungle views to notice any other humans, anyway. What guests say: “AMAZING PROPERTY! The pods are perfect for relaxing and finding your peace. It's like glamping in the rainforest. Each pod has its own ensuite so are very private, but still feel open to the jungle.”
