Mexico to Offer Visas to Caravan Migrants, but Only 100 a Day

TECUN UMAN, Guatemala—Mexican authorities have agreed to grant humanitarian and asylum visas to a caravan of 3,000 Honduran migrants massing at the country’s southern border—but the authorities also appear to be breaking up the group into smaller pieces.

Ambassador Luis Manuel Lopez Moreno said migration authorities will allow some 100 migrants a day in to review their humanitarian and asylum requests.

The move ensures the migrants can enter Mexico legally until their cases are resolved, which normally takes a few months. If their cases are approved, they will be allowed to stay in Mexico permanently.

However, the migrants will be free to roam in Mexico, the envoy said. That means nothing prevents them from heading to the U.S. border and trying to enter while their cases are being heard in Mexico.

TECUN UMAN, Guatemala—A caravan of 3,000 Honduran migrants that has drawn the ire of U.S. President Trump began to mass near Guatemala’s border with Mexico, setting up a showdown with Mexican authorities who have vowed to prevent the group from continuing their journey to the U.S.

Tension was palpable in Ciudad Hidalgo, a tiny tropical village in Mexico surrounded by rain forest and banana plantations that borders Tecun Uman in Guatemala, with the two towns separated by a muddy river. Late Thursday, some 300 Mexican federal police officers equipped with antiriot gear were deployed to the border crossing ahead of the caravan’s expected arrival.

On Thursday, the Mexican government asked the United Nations Refugee Agency for help in assisting migrants filing for refugee protection at the border, as Mr. Trump threatened to deploy the U.S. military and close the southern U.S. border with Mexico if it doesn’t stop what he described as an “onslaught” of migrants.

Trump says he is considering a new family separation policy at U.S.-Mexico border

President Trump confirmed Saturday that he is considering a new family separation policy at the U.S.-Mexico border because he believes the administration’s earlier move to separate migrant children from parents was an effective deterrent to illegal crossings.

Asked to respond to a report in The Washington Post that the administration is weighing a new family-separation policy, Trump told reporters, “We’re looking at everything that you could look at when it comes to illegal immigration.”

Trump said the soaring number of illegal border crossings is “a terrible situation” and argued that family separations likely would help scare away some undocumented migrants from trying to enter the United States.

“If they feel there will be separation, they won’t come,” Trump said.

Kanye West delivers impromptu 'keynote' at Washington Apple store

Following his meeting with President Donald Trump, rapper Kanye West visited an Apple Store in Washington, D.C., on Thursday, where he proceeded to climb atop a display table and deliver a "keynote" to gathered customers.

The scene was chronicled by Religion News Service reporter Jack Jenkins, who happened to be at Apple Georgetown when Kanye decided to drop in.

Shared on Twitter, Jenkins' account starts off as a celebrity sighting, but quickly takes a turn for the surreal when West asks to give an impromptu "keynote" to customers in the store.

According to Jenkins, West said he made a hat for Trump that reads "make America great," a take on the president's "Make America Great Again" or "MAGA" slogan. Trump donned the cap during his meeting with West earlier today, the rapper said, showing proof of the encounter on his iPhone.

West claimed the inclusion of "again" in Trump's catchphrase "hurts b[l]ack people," according to Jenkins.
