'Vladimir the Poisoner' A translation of Alexey Navalny's speech in court on February 2

On February 2, during a hearing that will determine if he remains in prison for several years to come, opposition figure Alexey Navalny addressed the court, delivering a short speech in which he maintained his innocence and condemned Russiaís political and legal system for corruption and repression. Meduza publishes an English-language translation of Navalnyís courtroom remarks below.

I would like to begin by discussing the legal issue here, which seems to me to be paramount and a bit overlooked in this discussion. There are two people sitting right there and one of them is saying: letís lock up Navalny because he showed up [to meet with his parole officers] on Mondays, not Thursdays. And the other says: letís lock up Navalny because he didnít show up immediately after coming out of his coma. But I would like everyone to remember that the essence of this trial is to lock me up over a case in which I was already exonerated ó a case thatís already been recognized as fabricated.

If we look at the criminal statutes ó your Honor, I hope youíve already done this once or twice ó weíll see that the European Court of Human Rights is part [of the Russian justice system] and its decisions are binding. The Russian Federation halfway acknowledged this ruling and even paid me compensation here. Despite this, my brother spent 3.5 years in prison because of this same case. I spent an entire year under house arrest for this same case.

Letís do a little math. The verdict was in 2014, itís 2021 now, and Iím still being prosecuted for this. Why this case exactly? Thereís a reason and itís not because thereís some shortage of criminal charges against me. Somebody wanted me arrested, the moment I crossed the border [after returning from Germany].

Next time somebody mentions space force, send this guy into the briefing room.

'Charming' D.B. Cooper suspect Sheridan Peterson dies at 94

Sheridan Peterson, long considered a suspect in the D.B. Cooper skyjacking case, died Jan. 8 in California. He was 94.

The California native served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and later worked as a technical editor at Boeing, the aerospace manufacturer based in Seattle.

He also was an experienced smokejumper. He loved skydiving and taking physical risks, even reportedly ďexperimenting with homemade bat wings.Ē These were keys reasons his name has flitted for years around internet message boards devoted to the D.B. Cooper case, the only unsolved skyjacking in U.S. history.

A man using the name Dan Cooper hijacked Northwest Orient Flight 305 out of Portland on Nov. 24, 1971. He parachuted out of the plane with $200,000 in ransom -- and disappeared. This led to the skyjacker becoming a folk hero. The case has inspired books and documentaries and even a feature film starring Treat Williams.

GOP operatives are sending out clear signals about the next attack on democracy

Hours after President Biden declared that "democracy has prevailed" during his inaugural address, longtime Republican strategist Karl Rove urged Republicans to pressure GOP election officials and legislators to create "a model election code" to reconsider the laws surrounding 2020's two voting options that led to the presidential election's record turnout.

"Republicans should also encourage GOP secretaries of state and state lawmakers to develop a model election code," Rove wrote in a January 20 commentary for the Wall Street Journal entitled, "The Republican Future Starts Now."

"The job of proposing electoral reforms shouldn't be based on the unsupported claims of widespread fraud peddled by Rudy Giuliani and Sidney Powell," Rove continued. "Instead, the goal should be to suggest measures that restore public confidence in our democracy. How do states with extensive mail-in and early voting like Florida and Texas get it right?"

Rove's commentary comes as Republican-majority legislatures in battleground states such as Georgia, Pennsylvania and Arizona have proposed bills or convened hearings to review the laws that allowed people to vote with mailed-out ballots or early in-person in 2020.

The combined wealth of the world's 10 richest men rose by $540bn (400bn) during the pandemic

The combined wealth of the world's 10 richest men rose by $540bn (£400bn) during the pandemic, according to Oxfam.

The charity claims this amount would be enough to prevent the world from falling into poverty because of the virus, and pay for vaccines for all.

The organisation is urging governments to consider taxes on the super-rich.

Oxfam's report comes as global leaders gather virtually for the World Economic Forum's "Davos Dialogue" meeting.

BBC: New UK variant 'may be more deadly'

Early evidence suggests the variant of coronavirus that emerged in the UK may be more deadly, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said.

The data has been assessed by scientists on the New and Emerging Respiratory Virus Threats Advisory Group, which has briefed government.

The new variant appears to be around 30% more deadly.

For example, with 1,000 60-year-olds infected with the old variant, 10 of them might be expected to die. But this rises to around 13 with the new variant.

I don't think Rand Paul got that unity memo yet

Because of toxic asshole rascists like Paul unity will never work, not until the repuke party vomits its racists out.

So tRump had all the trees removed around the Rose Garden just for a campaign photo shoot

so the White House would be clearer in the background per MSNBC.
