"U.S. Escalates Online Attacks on Russia's Power Grid"

WASHINGTON — The United States is stepping up digital incursions into Russia’s electric power grid in a warning to President Vladimir V. Putin and a demonstration of how the Trump administration is using new authorities to deploy cybertools more aggressively, current and former government officials said.
In interviews over the past three months, the officials described the previously unreported deployment of American computer code inside Russia’s grid and other targets as a classified companion to more publicly discussed action directed at Moscow’s disinformation and hacking units around the 2018 midterm elections.
Advocates of the more aggressive strategy said it was long overdue, after years of public warnings from the Department of Homeland Security and the F.B.I. that Russia has inserted malware that could sabotage American power plants, oil and gas pipelines, or water supplies in any future conflict with the United States.
But it also carries significant risk of escalating the daily digital Cold War between Washington and Moscow.

I am optimistic that the Republicans will crash and burn
Every news cycle the Republicans expose themselves as being even more bat-shit crazy fascists than anyone could ever have imagined.
The historical midterm loses, the increased gerrymandering, the voter suppression laws all be damned -- I simply can't believe that the American electorate is going to put the Republicans back in power.
No country is that stupid.
Not even us.
If Trump is in the news a lot, will it hurt us in the mid-terms?
I was thinking about this lately. When Trump was not on the ballot in 2018, Republican turnout was down and our Democratic candidates did very well, especially in congressional races.
But in 2020 Trump was on the ballot and in the news constantly and we saw the Republicans outperforming expectations in the senate and house contests, leaving us with a razor thin margin in both.
Honestly, if Stacy Abrams hadn't worked so hard in Georgia increasing voter turnout, we would have a Republican Senate right now. I still thank god every morning for Stacy Abrams basically performing a miracle and getting two Democratic senators elected against all odds.
So, would it be better for our chances in the 2022 midterms if Trump is out of the news? Or will even negative coverage of him facing legal and criminal charges actually help the Republicans?
I am not sure...

1. Without Senator Manchin, the Republicans would be in control of the Senate.
2. Without Senator Manchin, Mitchell McConnell would be once again running the Senate and no Democratic legislation would ever be brought to the floor for a vote.
3. Without Senator Manchin, Mitch McConnel would drag his feet and delay all of President Biden's judicial nominees.
Biden to announce plan to give 500 million Covid-19 vaccines to countries in need

President Joe Biden will announce Thursday at the G-7 meeting in Britain his plan to purchase 500 million doses of the Pfizer coronavirus vaccine to donate to other countries struggling with a limited supply.
Of the doses, 200 million will be donated this year and 300 million across the first half of next year. The doses will be distributed through COVAX and will be given to 92 low income countries as well as the African Union.
National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan told reporters traveling with the president Wednesday afternoon that Biden would use the G-7 summit to encourage other democratic allies to donate more vaccines to countries in need and that the G-7 would also make a joint announcement on their efforts to boost global vaccinations.
Sullivan said that contributing to global vaccine efforts was the "smart" thing for the U.S. to do because of the threat of Covid-19 variants and said that the emphasis on partnering with other democracies was aimed at demonstrating that democratic systems are equipped to "best deliver solutions."

Biden Economist Defends Budget in Shot at Trump 2017 Tax Cuts

White House economic adviser Bharat Ramamurti defended President Joe Biden’s plan to raise taxes on wealthy Americans and corporations by jabbing Republicans who voted for Donald Trump’s 2017 tax cuts.
“I’m not going to take a lecture from the same Republicans who voted for a $2 trillion tax cut a few years ago that had no discernible impact on business investment and that exploded the deficit by between $1 trillion and $2 trillion,” Ramamurti said Friday in an interview on Bloomberg Surveillance.
Ramamurti argued that Biden’s $1.7 trillion infrastructure package -- and his proposal to raise taxes on corporations -- is an investment in the U.S. economy and that it wouldn’t hamper growth. He said that essential components of the plan include increasing broadband Internet access in rural areas and removing lead pipes, particularly because some are in places where there are schools and childcare facilities.
“There’s clearly capacity for these companies to pay more in taxes to help finance the investments that, by the way, are going to be good for those companies in the long-run: better roads and bridges, broadband Internet and so on. This is a win-win scenario,” he said.
