"If there is a party that is trying to cast doubt on elections, as the way we choose who is in power, it means they want to stay in power regardless of elections; they want to stay in power without your consent and without your ability to remove them, which means they do not want to serve you".

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) Chief Justice John Roberts on Friday defended the authority of the Supreme Court to interpret the Constitution, saying its role should not be called into question just because people disagree with its decisions.
When asked to reflect on the last year at the court in his first public appearance since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, Roberts said he was concerned that lately some critics of the courts controversial decisions have questioned the legitimacy of the court, which he said was a mistake. He did not mention any specific cases or critics by name.
If the court doesnt retain its legitimate function of interpreting the constitution, Im not sure who would take up that mantle. You dont want the political branches telling you what the law is, and you dont want public opinion to be the guide about what the appropriate decision is, Roberts said while being interviewed by two judges from the Denver-based 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals at its conference in Colorado Springs.
...When asked what the public might not know about how the court work, Roberts emphasized the collegiality among the justices and the courts tradition of shaking hands before starting conferences or taking the bench. After the justices might disagree about a decision, everyone eats together in the courts dining room where they talk about everything but work, he said. He said its not borne out of fake affection but a respect that comes from the push and pull of explaining ideas and listening to the responses to them.
um....aren't they called "lawmakers" for a reason? What is that, just a nickname??

Computer experts urge GA to replace voting machines
https://www.wifr.com/2022/09/09/computer-experts-urge-georgia-replace-voting-machines/?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=snd&utm_content=wifrATLANTA (AP) A group of computer and election security experts is urging Georgia election officials to replace the states touchscreen voting machines with hand-marked paper ballots ahead of the November midterm elections, citing what they say are serious threats posed by an apparent breach of voting equipment in one county.
The 13 experts on Thursday sent a letter to the members of the State Election Board and to Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, whos a non-voting member of the board. It urges them to immediately stop using the states Dominion Voting Systems touchscreen voting machines. It also suggests they mandate a particular type of post-election audit on the outcome of all races on the ballot.
The experts who sent the letter include academics and former state election officials and are not associated with efforts by former President Donald Trump and his allies to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.
The midterm elections are just two months away. A switch to hand-marked paper ballots could easily be made by then because state law already provides for them to be used as an emergency backup, the letter says.
State Election Board Chair William Duffey responded in an email to The Associated Press that the security of our election equipment is of paramount interest to the State Election Board as is the integrity of the election process in Georgia. He noted that the alleged breach in Coffee County is being investigated by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and secretary of states office investigators and said the FBI has been asked to assist.

House Republicans are planning to try to open up Democrats' $740 billion tax, climate and health care bill to a legal challenge after it passes, Axios has learned.
Why it matters: The move is Republicans' way of showing their base that they're going to great lengths to kill the legislation, which is likely to be unanimously opposed by House Republicans.
"I would be shocked if anybody [in the GOP] voted for it," said Rep. Drew Ferguson (R-Ga.), the House Republican chief deputy whip.
Driving the news: Republicans, led by members of the right-wing House Freedom Caucus, plan to get "as many members as possible to vote by proxy" in order to deny Democrats a physical quorum, two senior Republican aides told Axios.
The bill would still pass, but Republicans hope a company affected by the tax provisions in the bill will then sue to challenge the law's constitutionality.
Fueling their plan is the fact that so many members are voting by proxy: there were 187 active proxy letters as of Friday afternoon, according to the House Clerk's office.
