Congressional Democrats are investigating whether leading US oil companies have illegally colluded with one another and with OPEC to inflate prices at the pump, CNN has learned.
Rep. Frank Pallone Jr., the ranking member of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, sent a letter Tuesday night to ExxonMobil, Chevron, Hess, BP America and three other fossil fuel companies demanding a trove of documents and communications.
“If US oil companies are colluding with each other and foreign cartels to manipulate global oil markets and harm American consumers who then pay more at the pump, Congress and the American people deserve to know,” Pallone, a New Jersey Democrat, wrote in a letter to oil CEOs. The companies have until June 5 to respond to the committee.
The investigation comes after a stunning accusation from federal regulators against Scott Sheffield, the longtime CEO of a leading Texas producer. The Federal Trade Commission earlier this month accused Sheffield, the founder of Pioneer Natural Resources, of conspiring with OPEC and its allies to boost prices.

Biden, Democrats slam video on Trump site referencing 'Unified Reich' while Republicans dodge commenting
President Joe Biden on Tuesday took aim at Donald Trump for the since-deleted video reposted to his social media site Truth Social referencing a "Unified Reich" if reelected.
Biden posted a video to X showing him reacting to the video.
"Is this on his official account?" Biden asked after a short clip of Trump's plays on a split screen. "Wow. A 'Unified Reich?' That's Hitler's language; that's not America's. He cares about holding on to power. I care about you."
Biden also slammed the controversial post as un-American during a campaign fundraiser in Boston, according to the White House press pool.

The Senate filibuster is a hurdle to any national abortion bill. Democrats are campaigning on it
Sen. Tammy Baldwin, facing a tough reelection fight in one of the races that will determine control of Congress, has made protecting reproductive rights a cornerstone of her campaign, and she's willing to back that up by pledging to change the Senate filibuster rules if Democrats retain control of the chamber.
The Wisconsin Democrat said taking that step is necessary to ensure that women in every state -– not the government -– can decide for themselves whether to have an abortion. As part of her campaign, she warns that Republicans might also target the filibuster to impose a national abortion ban if they prevail in November.
“Republicans have shown time and again that they will stop at nothing in their pursuit of controlling women’s bodies – and I believe them,” she said.
Democratic incumbents and challengers running for the Senate this year say they want to restore a national right to abortion, and many, like Baldwin, openly say they would support suspending the filibuster to do so. It’s become a key talking point as they try to capitalize on the nationwide battle over abortion rights that has generally helped Democratic candidates since the Supreme Court overturned constitutional protections two years ago.

Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) and Rep. Katie Porter (D-Calif.) pointed to a Washington Post report from March highlighting how taxpayers can avoid TurboTax’s numerous efforts to get them to share their data.
“TurboTax’s aggressive and potentially misleading tactics to get taxpayers to sign away their privacy and force them to pay for unnecessary services should be scrutinized,” the lawmakers wrote in a letter to several administration officials on Tuesday.

In Bolivia, cholita wrestlers are challenging stereotypes in skirts.
LA PAZ, Bolivia -- Polonia Ana Choque Silvestre, better known by her stage name of Carmen Rosa, was one of Bolivia's first female wrestlers.
At 49, she is a grandmother and unlike many scantily clad American female wrestlers, she competed in a pleated skirt, shawl and bowler hat with pigtail braids -- the signature outfit of "cholitas" -- indigenous Aymara and Quecha women who wear the signature cholita outfit.
Identifying as a cholita, she competed not just for sport, but for a cause -- fighting against machismo culture and violence against women that has been rampant in her country.
"Essentially the men didn’t want us to wrestle," said Rosa, better known as La Campoena: The Champion. "And also the women like us, our Aymara sisters said ‘why? This sport is for men.’"
