Major medical journal demands Trump’s removal over abject failures of COVID-19 response
Published 6 hours ago on May 15, 2020By Tom Boggioni

In a very rare commentary on political matters, the editors of the esteemed medical journal The Lancet called for a new president in 2021 who can competently deal with a major health crisis by letting health care professionals do their jobs.

The editors called out President Donald Trump and some of his top aides for undercutting the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) at a time when the U.S. and the world at large are being ravaged by the coronavirus.

Researchers from MIT and Harvard are working to develop a mask that lights up when it detects the new coronavirus, Business Insider reports. It's a technology already being worked on to detect Zika and Ebola.

The mask would "produce a fluorescent signal when a person with the coronavirus breathes, coughs or sneezes," BI reports. It could provide another layer of on-the-spot screening. Doctors could also use it as a preliminary way of testing patients for the virus before having to send samples to a lab.

JACKSON, Tenn. — An airport hanger in Jackson, Tennessee, is housing more than airplanes. Inside N95 respirators will be set for recycling.

“Our goal is to receive the masks and send them back out within 72 hours," said Ryan Stahlin, the site lead at Battelle Critical Care Decontamination System.

Stahlin says Battelle is working to address the current shortage of personal protective equipment or PPE during the COVID-19 pandemic. For healthcare workers on the front lines, a mask is part of their safety net. Crates now empty will see thousands of masks cleaned with hydrogen peroxide vapor.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - From New York to Connecticut and now in Kentucky, doctors nationwide are treating kids for pediatric multi-system inflammatory syndrome.

It’s a rare condition that health experts think may be linked to COVID-19, but they still can’t be sure because not all kids who have the syndrome are testing positive for the virus.
Governor Andy Beshear reported two children in Kentucky are battling the illness.

FEMA cancels $55 million contract for N95 masks

https://www.cnn.com/2020/05/13/politics/fema-ppe-contract-cancelled-coronavirus/index.html

CNN)The Federal Emergency Management Agency canceled a $55 million unfulfilled contract with a Virginia company for an order of N95 masks that was supposed to be sent earlier this month -- the latest in a string of cancellations many states and agencies have faced amid the scramble to procure personal protective equipment for front-line workers.

The company, Panthera Worldwide LLC, was awarded the contract on April 1 -- to be fulfilled by May 1 -- but it requested an extension for May 11. A FEMA official told CNN that FEMA reviewed the company, which is not a manufacturer, and believed it would be able to fulfill the contract. But when Panthera requested another delivery extension of 96 hours on May 11, FEMA denied the extension and canceled the contract. No money was paid for the contract, according to the official.

Why would FEMA not buy directly from manufacturer? And why cancel?

Black light experiment shows how quickly a virus like Covid-19 can spread at a restaurant

CNN)A viral video from Japan aims to show how easily germs and viruses can spread in restaurants when just one person is infected.

The experiment simulates the atmosphere at a buffet restaurant or on a cruise ship. It was conducted by the public broadcasting organization NHK in conjunction with health experts.

The video shows 10 people coming into the restaurant, with one singled out as the "infected" person. Each participant goes about the buffet as they normally would, not considering a potential contamination.
At the end of the video, the participants are cast under black lights illuminating where the "infection" has spread.

Tennessee officials: Coronavirus fear doesn't meet criteria to vote by mail

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee election officials say the fear of contracting the coronavirus doesn’t meet the criteria to vote by mail due to illness in the state.

Elections Coordinator Mark Goins said Tuesday the determination was made in consultation with the attorney general’s office.

Officials are advising their local counterparts to prepare as though all 1.4 million registered voters who are at least 60 will vote by mail in the August primary election due to the coronavirus pandemic. The guidance comes in Tennessee’s COVID-19 election contingency plan, which was prepared by the state Division of Elections.

Two lawsuits seek to allow voting by mail for all Tennessee voters.
