Disneyland increases attendance capacity, drops masks and physical distancing as pandemic rules end

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.ocregister.com/2021/06/14/disneyland-increases-attendance-capacity-drops-masks-and-physical-distancing-as-pandemic-rules-end/amp/

Disneyland will increase attendance, drop mask requirements for vaccinated visitors, discontinue physical distancing and continue advance reservations as the state ends most COVID-19 health and safety measures.

Disney Parks Chief Medical Officer Pamela Hymel outlined the changes coming to Disneyland and Disney California Adventure once pandemic restrictions end in a letter issued to employees on Monday, June 14

The full reopening of the California economy on Tuesday, June 15 after a 15-month pandemic hibernation will allow theme parks in the state to return to full capacity and end most COVID-19 health and safety measures.

Disneyland will no longer require masks for fully vaccinated visitors starting on Tuesday. Unvaccinated Disneyland visitors are expected to continue to wear a mask — except while dining.

Disney World Dropping Indoor Mask Mandate

Source: Forbes

Walt Disney World in Florida will lift its indoor mask mandate for vaccinated guests on June 15, the resort announced Friday, the latest unwinding of precautions taken by Disney’s largest theme park amid the coronavirus pandemic in response to rising vaccination rates and new public health guidance.

Starting June 15, vaccinated guests at Walt Disney World will not be required to wear face coverings except on Disney transportation like buses and monorails, where masks will still be required.

“We expect guests who are not fully vaccinated to continue wearing face coverings in all indoor locations,” the resort said on their website, though Disney noted they will not ask guests for proof of vaccination against Covid-19.

Disney moved to drop its mandate after nearby theme park Universal Orlando Resort had already dropped its indoor mandate in May, and after Orange County, Florida—where Walt Disney World is located—lifted its mask requirements and state of emergency last week.

Man Shot 6-Year-Old; Attacked Him With A Sledgehammer For Leaving His Bike On Front Lawn, Family Say

https://www.oxygen.com/crime-news/ryan-le-nguyen-allegedly-shot-6-year-old-over-bicycle

A Michigan man is accused of opening fire on a 6-year-old boy who left his bicycle in front of the man’s home.

Ryan Le-Nguyen, 29, faces charges of assault and intent to murder in Ypsilanti Township.

Coby Daniel, 6, suffered a gunshot wound to his arm and was rushed to hospital following the Saturday incident. He’s expected to make a full recovery.

Arnold Daniel, the boy’s father, told Detroit television station WJBK that Le-Nguyen first attacked the young boy with a sledgehammer when he left his bike on the man's front lawn. When the boy went to retrieve the bike, his father say Le-Nguyen opened fire, shooting the child in the arm.

Later in the story it says he was released on bail of $10K. Just ten thousand bucks after trying to murder a child? Really?

Senate's latest attempt at a gun control deal falls apart

https://www.politico.com/news/2021/06/09/senate-gun-control-deal-492696

The Senate's latest bipartisan attempt to shape a gun control bill came to an end Wednesday as the Democrat and Republican leading the push for a compromise abandoned their effort.

Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), who had spearheaded Democrats’ efforts to find a path forward for gun control, said Wednesday in a statement his discussions with Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) had run their course.

“We haven't been able to get to a bill that would meaningfully increase the number of gun sales that require background checks,” Murphy said in a statement.

But the Connecticut Democrat was hopeful for future compromise.

Protest erupts again over man killed by Minnesota deputies

Source: Associated Press

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Protesters faced off with officers in Minneapolis early Saturday over the shooting death of a man by members of a U.S. Marshals task force.

Photos from the scene following a vigil for Winston Boogie Smith Jr., 32, showed dumpster fires in the street and a line of officers standing guard. It was the second night of protests in response to the fatal shooting Thursday in Minneapolis’ Uptown neighborhood.

Authorities said Friday that Smith was wanted on a weapons violation and fired a gun before two deputies shot him while he was inside a parked vehicle. Members of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force were trying to arrest him on a warrant for allegedly being a felon in possession of a gun.

Family and friends described Smith as a father of three who was often harassed by police. They are demanding transparency in the investigation and have asked that anyone who might have video footage to come forward.

Unrest erupts after man dies in Minneapolis arrest attempt

Source: ABC News

MINNEAPOLIS -- Crowds vandalized buildings and stole from businesses in Minneapolis’ Uptown neighborhood after officials said a man wanted for illegally possessing a gun was fatally shot by authorities who were part of a task force trying to arrest him that included U.S. Marshals.

Following the Thursday afternoon shooting, a small crowd gathered in the neighborhood where the man was shot, shouting expletives at police.

Later in the night, people vandalized “numerous” buildings and looted some, Minneapolis police spokesman John Elder said in a email to reporters early Friday. A dumpster was burned and windows were smashed. Arrest totals weren't expected to be available until later Friday.

Little is known about Thursday's shooting. The U.S. Marshals Service said a task force was trying to arrest the man on a state warrant for being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Elon Musk reveals Starship progress ahead of first orbital flight of Mars-bound craft

https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/gadgets-and-tech/space/elon-musk-starship-sn16-mars-b1855721.html

SpaceX tycoon Elon Musk has shared a picture of his latest Starship prototype, the SN16, which is being readied for the project’s biggest test yet: the first orbital flight of a Mars-bound ship, due for blast off in July.

The towering 50-metre-long stainless steel craft is seen in a hangar at Mr Musk’s Starbase facility at Boca Chica in Cameron County, Texas, its sci-fi nose cone and fins cast against the night sky.

Starship’s development brings the Tesla billionaire closer to realising his dream of landing an astronaut on the hostile surface of Mars this decade, with a view to ultimately colonising the Red Planet and even constructing cities among its craters by 2050, a project that has already seen him secure a multi-billion dollar contract with Nasa.

SpaceX has ambitions to launch crewed missions to Mars as early as 2024 and currently has the field to itself, with no government agency or rival private company on course to challenge it.

Florida boy, 14, charged as an adult after cheerleader stabbed 114 times

https://www.tampabay.com/news/breaking-news/2021/05/28/florida-boy-14-charged-as-an-adult-after-cheerleader-stabbed-114-times/

Chilling new details have emerged about the fatal stabbing of a 13-year-old cheerleader who was found dead in a wooded area in Northeast Florida on Mother’s Day.

On Thursday, State Attorney for the 7th Circuit R.J. Larizza announced during a news conference that Tristyn Bailey was stabbed 114 times while fighting off her killer. He said at least 49 of the stab wounds were to her hands, arms and head and that they were “defensive in nature,” according to local media reports.

“We can’t say what happened at this pond but we know there was a struggle,” Larizza said at the news conference. “To say that it was horrific could arguably be made as an understatement.”

Charged in the case is 14-year-old Aiden Fucci, a schoolmate in St. Johns County. He has been in custody in a juvenile facility since his May 10 arrest on a charge of second-degree murder. Larizza announced Thursday that his charges would be upgraded to first-degree murder and that he would be charged as an adult. He faces a possible life sentence if convicted, according to The Associated Press.

Texas Senate has passed HB 957, exempting Texas-made suppressors from the NFA.

https://legiscan.com/TX/text/HB957/id/2226583

The bill does three things:

1) It repeals the state law which makes suppressors manufactured or owned outside the NFA illegal.

2) Establishes a class of suppressors which, if made in Texas with Texas-made parts, are legal outside the NFA as long as they remain in Texas. No $200 tax stamp, no background check, no year-long wait for approval, no paperwork of any kind. The suppressor must be marked "Made in Texas".

3) Sets a path to secure a declaratory judgment on the constitutionality of this law before anyone manufactures “Made in Texas” suppressors.

As the bill in the Senate was identical to the one passed by the House, it now goes to the governor's desk. It should be noted that even if the governor signs off on the bill, it will still have to go through the federal court system before becoming law.

Have U.S. Gun Buyback Programs Misfired?

https://www.nber.org/papers/w28763

Gun buyback programs (GBPs), which use public funds to purchase civilians' privately-owned firearms, aim to reduce gun violence. However, little is known about their effects on firearm-related crime or deaths. Using data from the National Incident Based Reporting System, we find no evidence that GBPs reduce gun crime.

Given our estimated null findings, with 95 percent confidence, we can rule out decreases in firearm-related crime of greater than 1.3 percent during the year following a buyback. Using data from the National Vital Statistics System, we also find no evidence that GBPs reduce suicides or homicides where a firearm was involved.
