Grumpy Old Guy's Journal***SUBMISSION THREAD FOR THE AUGUST PHOTO CONTEST-Second entries***
The August Photo Contest is now open for second entries! I will lock the thread at 30 photos.Okay folks, its time for the August photo contest. The theme, as chosen by LakeArenal, is as follows:
Trains, Planes and Automobiles etc.
Any battery or fueled passenger vehicles. Parts or whole, inside or out, above or below, with or without passengers. (Though passengers might make things more fun)
Hot air balloons, motor bicycles, go carts, etc. (I have a friend who professionally races go carts). All run on fuel to name a few.
HERE ARE THE BASIC RULES OF SUBMISSION:
Only one entry per person, and it must be a photograph you took yourself. You need to post your entry in this submission thread started by the Host of the contest. Please be sure to include a "Title" for your photograph in the Subject line of your post. The contest closes when we get thirty entries.
The submission thread is for photo entries only, no comments or questions. Those make my job a lot more difficult. I will post a thread for questions and comments shortly after I post this Submissions thread! If you decide for any reason to change the photo you've already entered, please do an edit in your original post rather than adding a new post, which throws off our count
Here is the link to the comments thread: https://democraticunderground.com/1036118220
The Volunteer Host is allowed to enter the Contest.
Please keep your entry no larger than 1024 pixels in its longest dimension and under 675K in file size and limit photo editing to a reasonable amount.
Once a photo is entered in a contest it is ineligible for any future contest unless the Host specifies otherwise.
CONTEST LICENSE:
An entrant to this contest (original work), by submitting a photograph, is giving permission for that photograph to be copied to Demopedia or to a linked Gallery and included in a DU Calendar that will display the photographs entered for this contest for the purpose of publicizing future contests and/or commemorating current and past contests. The entrant retains all other rights to the photograph being submitted. Neither Demopedia and/or a linked Gallery may use any photograph submitted for any purpose other than to display the photograph being submitted by the entrant, and neither gains any real or implied ownership rights to the photograph.
.
Here is the tentative timeline for the contest, subject to change.
Contest submissions: August 3rd through August 9th.
Preliminary Threads: August 10th August 12th.
Finals Threads: August 13th 15th.
Looking ahead to the August Photo Contest.
Here's a preview of the August photo contest.
The subject matter, as chosen by LakeArenal, is as follows:
Trains, Planes and Automobiles. Any battery or fueled passenger vehicles. Parts or whole, inside or out, above or below, with or without passengers. (Though passengers might make things more fun). Hot air balloons, motor bicycles, go carts.
Personally, I think this is a terrific subject. I can't wait.
The timeline is up in the air, (pardon the pun), but I'll try to get the contest started the first week of August. I'll run the entry thread for a week, the prelims for three days, and the finals for three days after that.
Good luck!

Hey photographers! Please check out this recent thread about photography in General Discussion.
https://democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=18082044Someone recently posted some really marvelous photos of the moon rising over the Lincoln Memorial. Of course, someone else who may not understand much about photography promptly labelled the photos as "fake" and "photoshopped."
You know that I could not let that go by. I posted a response explaining the concept of "forced perspective" as well as a description of some of the programs that we use to find these wonderful celestial alignments. I included some examples of my own work as well.
Here is a link to my main response.

Please check out the thread, and put in your own two cents worth if you feel so inclined.
Thanks,

Butterflies!
Shot at the butterfly exhibit at the South Coast Botanic Garden in Palos Verdes, California.
Bald Eagles!
I crossed a big item off my bucket list this week. I went to visit a bald eagle family that lives about ninety minutes from home. It was worth getting up at 4:30 A.M. Several of these shots were enhanced with AI for sharpness and clarity. To be honest, I would have been perfectly happy sitting there without a camera.
Superb B&W photos of the L.A. Subway system.
Plesse check out this article about the fine art B&W photography of my friend Ken Karagozian. Ken has been documenting the construction of the L.A. subway system since it began more than thirty years ago. His work was recently presented as a series of mural sized prints at L.A.'s Union Station. Ken began his photography career studying with Ansel Adams.
